Only one swinging strike out of 109 pitches.
Good God…

Is that even possible?
I guess it had to do with velocity. His movement was better than normal.

The good news is: he has two different fastball types, and he threw the one that moves a lot more tonight.
That also makes a difference in his overall fastball analysis.

He threw his two-seamer/sinker a lot tonight.

Yeah, that's not good.

Wow, those WPA numbers are wicked.
And this was a good night. The bullpen rest we needed.

It's good to see the guys get back to .500, and with the weaker schedule ahead the Rays have a good chance of getting a good run going
That doesn’t mean that I think the Rays are back to what they were last year. The starting pitching still bothers me. Niemann is the hero of the day in my eyes, giving the bullpen a much needed rest, but 24 straight fastballs to end it is not encouraging to me. Combine that with whatever the hell is wrong with Kazmir and sudden ineffectiveness of Sonny, and it doesn’t bode well for long-term success. One of these guys has to get going for real, not like Niemann did tonight against Oakland’s lifeless sticks, or the Rays are going to burn the entire bullpen out by July.
And about that bullpen; recent signs have been encouraging collectively, but they can’t keep all these arms. If the Rays are going to keep Izzy, he should be a functional replacement for Percival, but that’s not going to happen. I’d be OK if he replaces Wheeler instead of Percy, but that won’t happen either. I’m more afraid he’s going to replace Cormier and the team isn’t going to clearly remedy the starting pitching and thinking they can get by without a long reliever.
On the plus side, the first 20 games of the season, the Rays plated 91 runs. In the 2nd 20 games, they’ve plated 130. At a normalized pace, they’ll get around 880 runs this year. That’s solid. Willy Aybar is nice and hot right now; I like it when he gets long streaks in the lineup.
My question: Assume for a moment that Scott Kazmir, Andy Sonnanstine and Jeff Niemann continue to underperform. At the all-star break, the Rays are 4-7 games out of the wild-card spot. What do you do about the starting pitching, and how is it going to get the team into the playoffs? You can trade any one of those players along with Zobrist, Aybar, or Iwamura. Or you can pin your hopes on Price, Davis, or Talbot.

HAHAHA OH WOW
Do what you love to do and give it your very best. Whether it's business or baseball, or the theater, or any field. If you don't love what you're doing and you can't give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You'll be an old man before you know it.

Price should be up by then.
Tough question. If we’re that close, and Kaz/Sonny/Niemann’s twosome are still bad, I’m guessing Kazmir is hurt, so he could go to the DL while Davis makes a few starts.

Kaz and Sonny are the odd men out right now
Eventually Sonny will be DFA’ed (optioned if he has any left), and Kaz will go on the DL. Price comes up first, then Davis.
Niemann is actually the best of the three. When he loses confidence, he’s epically bad. But when he’s on, he is totally unhittable. And he has the best ERA of the three.

He doesn't even face Jack Cust if not for that "double"

They aren't going to DFA Sonnanstine over a bad month and a half.
Especially when he’s still better than Niemann.

Niemann is a catastrophe on the mound right now
He’ll need to put together a good couple of starts against a couple of good lineups before I’m sold on him. He still wets himself whenever someone gets on base and he still can’t get away from throwing a shit-ton of fastballs. He didn’t show improvement tonight, he showed that the A’s sticks suck. I’d much rather see him put together 3 more really good starts against a weak schedule (Minnesota, Cleveland, and overrated KC) then package him up with Aki and ship them off so the Rays can fill a hole somewhere and bring up Brignac to back up Aybar or Zobrist.

How did he not show improvement tonight?
His release point was consistent. He located his two-seamer down and away on a regular basis.
I'm not going to be sold on one good outing.
And his release point doesn’t counter any of my other criticisms of him, and the A’s offense isn’t good. He pitched pretty well last night, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to keep pitching well.
"Where we all wait in earnest with pudding in hand for the Upton comet to sail through the roofed skies, so that we may meet Him."
It kind of does.
“He didn’t show improvement, he showed the A’s sticks suck.” While part B is true, part A is false. His release point had been inconsistent in other games. Against the A’s, he really found a groove. No matter what the lineup, Neimann would have had a good game last night. 8 innings? Unlikely, but he would have given us a quality start with the way he was pitching last night. Fuck, the man generated 12 groundballs and only threw 35 balls.
It’s impossible to guarantee he’ll continue pitching well from this point on, but give the man some credit.
Agreed
The fact we jumped out on top had to help him mentally. He looked so much calmer on the mound. In Niemann’s 3 best outings the Rays jumped out to early leads (@Sea, @Minn, Oak). He tenses up in the tight spots. Makes me nervous for pen work.
