Reid Brignac and Dale Thayer Promoted, Scott Kazmir and Troy Percival to the DL

According to Marc Lancaster, the mystery Durham Bulls to be called up are Reid Brignac and Dale Thayer. The lack of a starting pitcher in this equation leads me to believe Scott Kazmir and everybody else in the rotation is safe. My bet is two relievers will hit the DL, possibily Joe Nelson and Troy Percival. Of course that is just speculation, but we'll see how this all shakes out in the next few hours.

---

Lancaster has confirmed the promotions.

---

Percival officially to the DL, as first reported by Steve Duemig.

---

So Thayer, Brignac are on the way up, Percival is to the DL, and one other player will join him, as there are reportedly no roster moves of the trade/DFA  variety.

---

Scott Kazmir is your other DL tripper. A pulled quad, per Marc Lancaster.

My guess is

to get him some exposure, to get another body on the bench (back to 13 position players) and potentially move Aki (complete guess)

Word.

I would argue most those teams have more payroll flexibility than we do, but when a guy sucks and costs money, it’s better just to get rid of him.

Some would argue that we can take on more payroll than we let on. I really don’t know about the financial side of baseball well enough to roll with that statement.

by Suttree on May 22, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Well it depends too.

If you’re waiving a guy to replace him with someone in the Minor leagues, you’re just eating sunk cost since the price of the minor leaguer is marginal. If you’re doing it however to clear up a roster spot for a potential trade that’s bringing back a large salary, then you’re just burning money, and it isn’t a smart move.

no way...

A talent like Hamilton—-you know, a talent able to overcome almost 5 years off & start raking in the big leagues—-would’ve done something if he stayed here. Isn’t Friedman even on record as saying this was a mistake? Even if you argue we couldn’t deal with the distraction on a young team back then(constant life coach/mentor around, can’t go out with teammates on the road)—-or you didn’t want to give a recovering crack addict a big contract extension if he DID do well—-you still keep him on the 40-man, lest you can deal him & get a Volquez(sp?).

by liquidmuse3 on May 22, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

What are your precedents?

Steve Howe, Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry? Yeah those guys went out to consistently produce after “getting over” their addictions. Hamilton is hurt now and really wasn’t the same guy after the ASG last year. Argue if you want, but this isn’t even their worst “mistake”.

It's debatable.

Not really worth debating, but it is. In a vacuum of the Josh Hamilton situation, it was a decent move. He didn’t want to play at AA, he had bad connections in the area, etc… but, considering some of the guys we kept on the 40 man, it was a mistake.+

yeah, I'm hoping he's more Stephen Drew than that.

But, cost controlled Khalil Greene is not bad, particularly if he ends up moving to 2B.

by Suttree on May 22, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't think he has much development left at AAA

Sure regular at bats will help, but I don’t think he needs them anymore

by Sveet on May 22, 2009 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably, unless they think he's pretty much capped out at AAA and has more value to us now.

Likely it’s only a weekend visit, though. He’ll be back in Durham when Bat gets back.

Happy to see Thayer make it

Talk about someone needing to produce to get a look. Briganc confuses me a bit unless there’s a follow-up move or someone is hurt that we don’t know about

If Percival’s really gone, he’s one of them.

Kapler (OF), Zobrist (OF), Aybar (IF), Brignac (IF), Hernandez ©

Just balancing out the roster.

by Suttree on May 22, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Zobrist has been an IF his whole career

just because we need him in RF doesn’t make him more OF, than IF. Ruggiano would have balanced the roster out just the same.

This being said, If Maddon is finally going to make Zobrist the everyday RF than it makes sense, but considering it hasn’t been done yet I have little faith that decision has been made.

by Dbullsfan on May 22, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

30 games in the OF this year. 9 in the IF.

I’m inclined to believe he’s an outfielder primarily.

Need positional flexibility for double switches + extra bat off bench

Do what you love to do and give it your very best. Whether it's business or baseball, or the theater, or any field. If you don't love what you're doing and you can't give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You'll be an old man before you know it.

Brignac

Won’t bringing up Brignac allow the Rays more flexibility?….Then you can play Zobrist more in RF and not worry about him spelling Barty or Aki. You bring up another outfileder it limits when you can use Zobrist. Too crowded in RF if you bring up another OF for guys to get at bats. Aki and Barty don’t need that many days off. This move should get more of Zobrist in the line up.

by lao149992 on May 22, 2009 3:38 PM EDT reply actions

If Maddon wanted to play Zobrist more in RF he could have

We still have Aybar and if something did happen to Barty or Aki in a game than all he had to do was move Zo to the infield and bring in a Gabe to RF.

While this gives us more flexability if Maddon doesn’t want to use Zo as an everyday RF this won’t affect that.

by Dbullsfan on May 22, 2009 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Boo fucking yeah.

I don’t mind if they keep him around when he gets off the DL…. as a coach.

by Suttree on May 22, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Are there

any restrictions to putting someone on the DL, or can you basically just put anyone on there?

by Buc Wild on May 22, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

He could file a grievance, but I imagine he was taken aside and told that he can either be on the DL and get paid

or he can go home for the rest of the year and get paid. Only one of those options gives him any chance to get back on the field this year.

Do what you love to do and give it your very best. Whether it's business or baseball, or the theater, or any field. If you don't love what you're doing and you can't give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You'll be an old man before you know it.

Nelson next? JP to close please

given that it is Thayer and not Talbot/Price, I’m assuming the next move is another reliever.

and who takes over the 9th, JP please

i agree

nelson to the DL please, howell needs to be handed the 9th inning duties. balfour and cormier and issy and thayer can split the 7th and 8th.

Price or Davis or I end myself

For gods sake, give me this rotation from here on out. 1 James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3, David Price 4. Andy Sonnanstine(i guess I trust him) 5. Wade Davis

Non-40 man guys are long term replacements, not short term ones.

Hernandez is last on this list, I don’t know why people keep thinking he’s going to come up sooner.

Not really

If we add Carlos Hernandez and remove him in a month, are we really going to be upset if he gets plucked off waivers?

My thoughts are

Talbot is the clear cut #1, on the 40 man, has a little bit of experience and it doesn’t seem like we are in a hurry to bring up Davis or Price. While Hernandez would need to be added, if he struggles than we can just put him on waivers, if he is good than he goes to the pen and someone else goes on the dl when Kaz is ready.

by Dbullsfan on May 22, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

well it will be very telling after the game

If Talbot starts his game tonight, then it wont be him…..

eh whatever

at this point, id rather see Price but post All Star, I would love both

Nice to put 2 weak links on the DL now if Wheeler, Sonny and Nelson can wake up……
