Reid Brignac and Dale Thayer Promoted, Scott Kazmir and Troy Percival to the DL
According to Marc Lancaster, the mystery Durham Bulls to be called up are Reid Brignac and Dale Thayer. The lack of a starting pitcher in this equation leads me to believe Scott Kazmir and everybody else in the rotation is safe. My bet is two relievers will hit the DL, possibily Joe Nelson and Troy Percival. Of course that is just speculation, but we'll see how this all shakes out in the next few hours.
---
Lancaster has confirmed the promotions.
---
Percival officially to the DL, as first reported by Steve Duemig.
---
So Thayer, Brignac are on the way up, Percival is to the DL, and one other player will join him, as there are reportedly no roster moves of the trade/DFA variety.
---
Scott Kazmir is your other DL tripper. A pulled quad, per Marc Lancaster.

Why brignac?

My guess is
to get him some exposure, to get another body on the bench (back to 13 position players) and potentially move Aki (complete guess)
Thayer Good. Brignac...::shrug::

Maddon is one for oddities
and I thought we might be DLing and/or sending down some pitchers. We need 30 men in the bullpen if we can’t get our starters to go very far in the game.
Been on the bandwagon since '98
Why hasn't Thayer had a shot yet?
28 year-old rookie who has a 2.24 era with 396 K’s in 386 innings. Makes you wonder why Friedman would bring in old washed up relievers with bad arms with a guy like this in AAA.
Still a mistake
we could have got his numbers from Ruggs
Let's not forget he was retired
a year ago at this time and had a short flurry with MIL
I’m becoming very skeptic of NL to AL players
Note Burrell, Kapler, DeRosa to name a few
Definitely
Too bad everyone knows we’re desperate to unload a couple pitchers and no one on our staff has options. We’ll get no value for anyone, thanks Friedman.
I don't want to do that but I'd like to see him not play as much(espescially over Zobrist).
I love Gross as a backup and I’d settle for a platoon with just him or Zobrist. Keep Kapler as solely a backup! Put Kapler in left to rest CC’s knees at home.
Been on the bandwagon since '98

Word.
I would argue most those teams have more payroll flexibility than we do, but when a guy sucks and costs money, it’s better just to get rid of him.
Some would argue that we can take on more payroll than we let on. I really don’t know about the financial side of baseball well enough to roll with that statement.
Well it depends too.
If you’re waiving a guy to replace him with someone in the Minor leagues, you’re just eating sunk cost since the price of the minor leaguer is marginal. If you’re doing it however to clear up a roster spot for a potential trade that’s bringing back a large salary, then you’re just burning money, and it isn’t a smart move.
"Where we all wait in earnest with pudding in hand for the Upton comet to sail through the roofed skies, so that we may meet Him."
I dont get it...
We don’t do anything with Percy when he’s looking like absolute shit, but we DL him (according to that report) when he actually looks half decent as of late.
I don't see why we keep toying with him on the DL, just DFA.
I don’t think he is going to figure anything out anymore

Percival has sucked for a long time. He has sucked worse. He is still sucking, but his suckiness isn’t as bad as it was before. It would have made far more sense to get rid of him like 1000 appearances ago.
But I'm still for DFAing him
I just don’t see why its taken so long. I am just perplexed that they would put up with him really sucking but then get rid of him once he gets slightly better (although still way in the realm of horrid).

no way...
A talent like Hamilton—-you know, a talent able to overcome almost 5 years off & start raking in the big leagues—-would’ve done something if he stayed here. Isn’t Friedman even on record as saying this was a mistake? Even if you argue we couldn’t deal with the distraction on a young team back then(constant life coach/mentor around, can’t go out with teammates on the road)—-or you didn’t want to give a recovering crack addict a big contract extension if he DID do well—-you still keep him on the 40-man, lest you can deal him & get a Volquez(sp?).
What are your precedents?
Steve Howe, Doc Gooden, Darryl Strawberry? Yeah those guys went out to consistently produce after “getting over” their addictions. Hamilton is hurt now and really wasn’t the same guy after the ASG last year. Argue if you want, but this isn’t even their worst “mistake”.

Not really worth debating, but it is. In a vacuum of the Josh Hamilton situation, it was a decent move. He didn’t want to play at AA, he had bad connections in the area, etc… but, considering some of the guys we kept on the 40 man, it was a mistake.+

Seth McClung's ass didn't make it to the World Series, did it?
Also, he has 14 walks in 20 innings this season. And you’re bitching at Balfour about walks?
For comparison, Balfour has given up 13 walks in 19 innings.
Not good either, but better. Also, Balfour’s 18 Ks are better than McClung’s 13. Nice of Aussie to keep his K/BB ratio positive.

Wow, I would be mad, but if we pulled something good for him, that'd be a decent enough move.
It would make Brig’s move up permanent as the primary IF replacement.
He will only be up briefly
unless there are some larger developments. Plus I think he is what he is at this point
Hopefully less injured
I’ll be thrilled if he ends up being a healthy Greene
Vogt early, Vogt often.
yeah, I'm hoping he's more Stephen Drew than that.
But, cost controlled Khalil Greene is not bad, particularly if he ends up moving to 2B.
I was referring to his general career.
He has turned the corner with plate discipline this year, though. Dunno if it’s real. Too bad we don’t get O-Swing type data for minor leaguers.
I think people underrate his focus on defense last season
I think it directly relates to his drop off at the plate.
I don't think he has much development left at AAA
Sure regular at bats will help, but I don’t think he needs them anymore
Probably, unless they think he's pretty much capped out at AAA and has more value to us now.
Likely it’s only a weekend visit, though. He’ll be back in Durham when Bat gets back.
Happy to see Thayer make it
Talk about someone needing to produce to get a look. Briganc confuses me a bit unless there’s a follow-up move or someone is hurt that we don’t know about
Vogt early, Vogt often.
LEARN TO USE FANGRAPHS, OLD MAN.
2008 AAA Thayer:
69 IP, 76 Ks, 24 BB, 2.77 ERA, 2.41 FIP.
2009 AAA Thayer
19.1 IP, 11 Ks, 5 BB, 0.93 ERA, 3.51 FIP
in the meantime, welcome back to the bigs our boy J.G. RT: @ctrent #Reds moves: Jonny Gomes, Homer Bailey, Carlos Fisher up…

Believe this at your own risk.
BigDogwdae Percival not with team. Eyewitness and very reliable sees him on flight to Vegas!!
No idea if it’s true or not, but…
The "flight to Vegas" thing seems a bit out there.
Dunno.

Yeah... I'm pretty sure he would have gone on a Terminator-in-the-police-station type rampage.
He just wouldn’t have enough time to get on a flight by now.
If he was told yesterday, maybe I can buy him flying home.
That just seems too specific to be true though.

Aki for that matter too.

I think it's been covered all ready.
But, for recap sake.
C: Navarro, Hernandez
1B: Pena
2B: Aki
3B: Longoria
SS: Bartlett
LF: Carl
CF: BJ
RF: Gross
Kapler (OF), Zobrist (OF), Aybar (IF), Brignac (IF), Hernandez ©
Just balancing out the roster.
Zobrist has been an IF his whole career
just because we need him in RF doesn’t make him more OF, than IF. Ruggiano would have balanced the roster out just the same.
This being said, If Maddon is finally going to make Zobrist the everyday RF than it makes sense, but considering it hasn’t been done yet I have little faith that decision has been made.
Need positional flexibility for double switches + extra bat off bench

Brignac
Won’t bringing up Brignac allow the Rays more flexibility?….Then you can play Zobrist more in RF and not worry about him spelling Barty or Aki. You bring up another outfileder it limits when you can use Zobrist. Too crowded in RF if you bring up another OF for guys to get at bats. Aki and Barty don’t need that many days off. This move should get more of Zobrist in the line up.
If Maddon wanted to play Zobrist more in RF he could have
We still have Aybar and if something did happen to Barty or Aki in a game than all he had to do was move Zo to the infield and bring in a Gabe to RF.
While this gives us more flexability if Maddon doesn’t want to use Zo as an everyday RF this won’t affect that.
so what happens when PTB comes back and Briggy goes back to Durham
the world doesn’t end and I’m pretty sure PTB isn’t playing IF any time soon.
Then Aybar won't be DHing and can play the infield.
by R.J. Anderson on May 22, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Of course, for these next three games this is the case as well, but you get my point.
by R.J. Anderson on May 22, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions
so we take Brignac out of the everyday line-up in Durham for 2 days worth of use off the bench
unless Barty tweaked something and needs a couple days off this makes no sense.
Isn’t PTB due back in less than a week.
Are you really freaking out cause Brignac will miss a couple games at Durham?
This happened last year. He came up for less than a week and went back. It happens.
Are there
any restrictions to putting someone on the DL, or can you basically just put anyone on there?
He could file a grievance, but I imagine he was taken aside and told that he can either be on the DL and get paid
or he can go home for the rest of the year and get paid. Only one of those options gives him any chance to get back on the field this year.

Nelson next? JP to close please
given that it is Thayer and not Talbot/Price, I’m assuming the next move is another reliever.
and who takes over the 9th, JP please
i agree
nelson to the DL please, howell needs to be handed the 9th inning duties. balfour and cormier and issy and thayer can split the 7th and 8th.
In case you’re wondering on that front, looks like Carlos Hernandez would be the guy on proper rest if they do need a starter that day.
That’s from Lancaster. Frankly, if we call up Durham’s 4th best starter, I’ll be upset.
www.raysprospects.com
I was just about to post that from Lancaster
he seems to think that Kaz may be the guy going on the DL
Price or Davis or I end myself
For gods sake, give me this rotation from here on out. 1 James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3, David Price 4. Andy Sonnanstine(i guess I trust him) 5. Wade Davis
Non-40 man guys are long term replacements, not short term ones.
Hernandez is last on this list, I don’t know why people keep thinking he’s going to come up sooner.
"Where we all wait in earnest with pudding in hand for the Upton comet to sail through the roofed skies, so that we may meet Him."
Not really
If we add Carlos Hernandez and remove him in a month, are we really going to be upset if he gets plucked off waivers?

Is he good enough to get plucked?
"Where we all wait in earnest with pudding in hand for the Upton comet to sail through the roofed skies, so that we may meet Him."
I guess that's a maybe, if they're really hell-bent on sticking to their guns with the rotation guys, a 2nd long reliever wouldn't hurt.
"Where we all wait in earnest with pudding in hand for the Upton comet to sail through the roofed skies, so that we may meet Him."
My thoughts are
Talbot is the clear cut #1, on the 40 man, has a little bit of experience and it doesn’t seem like we are in a hurry to bring up Davis or Price. While Hernandez would need to be added, if he struggles than we can just put him on waivers, if he is good than he goes to the pen and someone else goes on the dl when Kaz is ready.
Talbot's scheduled tonight for the Bulls, so that could give us a clue.
We’ll see if he makes the start.

well it will be very telling after the game
If Talbot starts his game tonight, then it wont be him…..
For gods sake, give me this rotation from here on out. 1 James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3, David Price 4. Andy Sonnanstine(i guess I trust him) 5. Wade Davis
Price, sure...Davis not really
I would even accept Talbot.

eh whatever
at this point, id rather see Price but post All Star, I would love both
Nice to put 2 weak links on the DL now if Wheeler, Sonny and Nelson can wake up……

Thayer will be around until Monday and than we will call up a starter. No need for a starter to waste a spot till his turn in the rotation
reason why bringing him up is pointless unless Barty is hurt or in desperate need of a day off
playing without a DH means Aybar is available.
We'll make another move on Monday.
No point calling up a starter now for him to sit and do nothing for 3 days.
M.V.Z. Most Valuable Zorilla!
Hernandez i think..
But they could pull any of this weekends starters. We’ll probably know who it is before Monday.

It's gotta be Price.
Talbot pitches tonight, David pitched on the 20th, so he’ll have an extra day of rest.

Yesterday was Houser
Today is Talbot
Tomorrow is Price
Sunday is Davis
