Dear Troy Percival:
It has come to my attention that you have once again been placed on the DL, this time with an issue with your arm. As a human being, I will gladly say that I am dissapointed that this has happened to you. I know that you are well-liked in the clubhouse and the last thing you want to do is let the team down by not being there for them. I also understand that you have decided that while you're on the DL, that you're going to contemplate ending your career. Know that as a fan, I feel that your contributions to this team as a clubhouse leader played a significant role in raising the morale of the collective group, injecting confidence in their own abilities, which in turn allowed the team to turn around a history of failure and bring excitement about the game of Baseball back to the Tampa Bay Area for the first time since 1998. For this, I am truely thankful.
That being said, I'd also like to note that as a fan, I would greatly appreciate it if you absolutely never, ever, took the mound again. Your performance for the Rays for the last calendar year has been at best, unremarkable, and at worst, capable of starting riots. Please understand, I don't dislike you, I find your demeanor quite humorous, and I love your gritty-white-guy spirit as much as the next white guy, but God Damn It, I can't stand to watch you pitch. I'm seriously surprised that the Rays haven't contractually obligated you to change your entrance music to The Funeral March. Your location is awful, and your antics when you're being pulled cross the line of a guy who wants to finish what he's started to a guy who is crying like a baby whose just had his toy taken away from him. We're cheering on the Rays, hoping they make a repeat appearance in the playoffs, and frankly, your performance is doing far more harm then your presence does good.
Just understand, this isn't personal, it's all about the game. Do the right thing. Hang up your cleats, let the Rays give you a front-office job where we can talk to you in public about last season, and you can tell all those grizzled veteran stories with the unique panache that only you bring; or hell, go back and sit in your comfy lay-z-boy, crack open a Natty Ice, grab a handful of beer nuts and watch the game from the confines of your home. It's your choice. Just don't. Come. Back.

Why?
I know he has not hit well this year. But at 33 he does not appear to be physically in decline, so why are you considering his 67 plate appearances this year stronger evidence that he cannot contribute than his 245 PAs last year when he hit .340/.354/.694 or his 3003 career PAs in which he has a .271/.330/.422 line?
Or for that matter why are his 45 PAs this year against lefties in which he has hit .256/.333/.436 more significant evidence than last years .354/.379/.622 line against lefties in 87 PAs or his career line of .293/.343/.482 in 924 PAs?
Part of the answer is that his previous 3 years in Boston were pretty bad, so perhaps he is through, although he did sit out all of 2007 and came back strong. But overall, he is a righty bat underperforming (albeit not as badly against lefties as I thought) early in the year and who still can play all 3 outfield positions. I am not convinced he cannot contribute, and I am not particularly concerned that he is taking ABs away from Zobrist or that he is blocking Joyce. Zobrist is seeing plenty of action, and Joyce will eventually replace Gross, not Kapler.

Well said.
I think part of the problem is ab envy. These basement blobs on draysbay.com are simply embarassed when they see something like this:

Well...
A couple of months ago, I would have handled this as politely as you have. But after watching Percival bitch out that foul-ball-snagging fan a few weeks ago, I have no sympathy for him. The ball club is infinitely more important than he is, so f&^% him if he wants to complain. Just don’t let the door hit you on the way out, big guy.

If that fan had done the right thing, he would have stayed far, far away from the foul ball.
Really. The field fans here need to attend a class of what-to-do’s. It’s absurd that we’ve already had two incidents in the last year where fans are or are not appropriately interfering with beyond-the-bounds efforts.

I agree.
But what you’ve written has absolutely no bearing on whether Troy Percival decides to rip into some guy who was there with his son and just made a mistake.
Your premise is that fans need to know what not to do. You can’t then say that Percival was justified in acting like an asshole.

How is he supposed to react? Would you have preferred if he walked over talked to him about it over a beer after the game?

You're horrible Ronde
Do what you love to do and give it your very best. Whether it's business or baseball, or the theater, or any field. If you don't love what you're doing and you can't give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You'll be an old man before you know it.

I am glad
you began the post by remarking on the positives Percival brought to TB. He has had a very honorable career and deserves to leave baseball, and in particular the Rays, with appreciation and respect.
I do not want him on the Rays staff either. He has become too unreliable. But I also don’t think that he has been as bad as many say, because I don’t think relievers can be evaluated by rate stats entirely. Their low innings totals skew the percentages too easily. Rather we need to look at the game by game performances, and on that score, Percival did make some positive contributions.
More telling yet are the in depth analyses of his pitch types and command which indicate he is no longer a good major league pitcher, and for that reason he has been a problem for the Rays. So he appears to be gone. But we need to demonstrate gratitude for what he did bring us and for the contributions he did make and not toss him aside (as fans) with nastiness and scorn.
I am particularly incensed by fans who judge players based on a few public incidents such as Percival’s angry response to the fan or his stubbornness about staying in games. In the overall context of his career and his clubhouse and public demeanor those are no more than blips and should not be used as an excuse to deride him.

Indeed. Hopefully he'll see the light and retire now. If he comes back again, he may end up going down Tim Brown style; that's bad for both parties.
