I'm not sure what you are basing this on?

Navi has been consistently one of the worst offensive catchers in the league. He had a good stretch last year, but I trust the far larger sample size of massive offensive suckitude.

by matthan on May 24, 2009 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

And I agree Navi is better than some of those catchers

He is still one of the worst in the league. However just being a starting MLB catcher for a few years in a row makes him pretty good in itself. He just isn’t good compared to his peer group.

by matthan on May 24, 2009 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I think he is better than every single one of those catchers

by a longshot. If he puts up a .315-.325 wOBA and his defense is assumed as at least average as a result of his good ability throwing out runners he is very useful

by Navi's_Navy on May 24, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

The data shows he is one of the worst offensive catchers every single year he has played except last. A few spots above average last year. My scale is starting catchers.

by matthan on May 24, 2009 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

as is mine

he has played 2 years and a bit. 1 year was bad, 1 year wasn’t. I fail to see your point

by Navi's_Navy on May 24, 2009 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

So what are oyu basing him being decent on?

The data shows otherwise.

Look at his career wOBA. Look at it year by year. Compare it to others. It is pretty simple. Every single year except last he is one of the worst in the league.

by matthan on May 24, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Again, you're basing this on what.. 3 major league seasons?

He had one rough season, one good one, and one we’re in the middle of.

by Suttree on May 24, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

you say every year

as if there are more than two. Compare it to other starting catchers? The problem is a bunch of other catchers can’t hold

by Navi's_Navy on May 24, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

can't hold their jobs

so there isn’t a decent sample size to compare him to.

by Navi's_Navy on May 24, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

The other catchers have performed better than Navi

If Navi was held to the same standard as other catchers he wouldn’t have a job.

And he had 302 PA in 2006 and 200 in 2005

I’m not sure how you can totally discount those years

by matthan on May 24, 2009 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

You have to assume that he hasn't peaked though

He hasn’t even started to hit his prime and most other catchers were in AAA at his age.

-Al Lopez

by Sandy Kazmir on May 24, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure

I don’t think he is this bad. I think he is average against his peers at best over the next few years. Good enough to hold a job but nothing worth praising.

I can dig that
