Ray Durham?
With Iwamura and Bartlett going down (Iwamura for the full year), the Rays are a bit strapped in the middle infield. There are three free agent second basemen who are still available and who are unsigned - Ray Durham, Mark Grudzielanek and Damian Easley. Easley probably isn't much better than internal options, and Grudzielanek is about the same as some of our 2B internal options (i.e., will hit OK, but will stink at defense), so we can probably rule out those two as options for the team, but what about Ray Durham?
Durham would probably be a shoo-in if he didn't have a rotten 2007. In 2008, his OPS was .813, and his UZR/150 was -0.9, meaning he doesn't really hurt you on the field. In 2006, his OPS was .898 and his UZR/150 was -1.0. However, in 2007, he was atrocious, with an OPS of .638 and a UZR/150 of -9.0. Still, even when he's bad, he can be counted on to draw walks and hit with a little bit of pop.
The question is what do the Rays have to lose? Sure, he would cost marginally more than using internal options, but does Brignac really seem so ready that he couldn't use some more development time in Durham the city? Is Brignac's defense at a position he's rarely played so much better than Durham's that it makes up for the current difference in their bats? Was Durham's 2007, far and away the worst year of his career both offensively and defensively, so bad that we don't want to risk signing someone who might be a black hole of suck?
Personally, I'm all for it. I think the risks are greater if we leave the roster as it's currently set. Based on his fielding at shortstop, Zobrist's fielding at 2B probably isn't very good. Based on scouting reports, Aybar's fielding at 2B probably isn't very good either (and outside of Aybar's superstint while Longoria was injured last year, Durham's bat has always been much better than Aybar's. From a developmental perspective, I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to send Brignac down when Bartlett comes back, and to give him some more regular time at 2B, as well as allow him to adjust to killing marginal MLB pitching. In the worst case scenario, Durham of 2009 looks like Durham of 2007, and the team ends up wasting $500 grand or so, and we're back in the same position that we're already in. But in the best case, I believe that the combination of average defense with an above average bat at the position could make a difference that's measurable in wins.

Brignac will be good defensively
Just gotta wait until MVB comes back.

But if he has a .650 OPS
Would it be worth it.
Also, I’ll re-throw Grudzielanek out there. For some reason I thought he was a negative defender, but the numbers say he’s better than Durham.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Are you expecting Grudz or Durham to have a higher than .650 OPS? Seems like wishful thinking at this point.

That is to say I would think that Briggy has a better chance of finishing the year higher than 650

This, especially considering it's going to be short term.
I feel pretty confident in Aybar’s ability to handle second, with the occasional spot from Brig and Zobrist.
Durham has had an OPS under .650 one time in a pretty long career
His OPS was over .800 last year. I don’t think expecting an OPS over .650 is unreasonable
Cut Izzy!
Considering they were both over .800 last year
Yeah, I think that’s a reasonable expectation.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
That's probably why Brick assumed he was a poor defender...

Durham...
old, crappy, washed up, no longer good, not needed, redundant, worse then zobrist, garbage, a waste of space, etc…
the answer is no.
Seriously?
He was an above-average 2B last year, and he was one of the best players in the league in 2006.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Free Ray Durham!
(this message paid for with a grant from the Barry Bonds Freedom Foundation)
Today, we are all Honkballers.
I agree
Which makes me wonder….see question above
Why aren’t these guys(Durham & Grudz) playing somewhere?
Were their demands too high?
Cut Izzy!
As to Durham
He couldn’t get anyone to offer a major league deal, so he sat out hoping to wait for people to get injured rather than signing a minor league deal. With Grudz, I’m not sure. He was offered arbitration and didn’t accept it. He was a Type B free agent, which hurts a little, but the compensation lapsed on May 1.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Can he pitch?
The first four adjectives seem to describe a couple bullpen arms.

I think we are good with Aybar and Brignac and Zobrist
MVB said his ankle isn’t that bad and I want Aybar to get more at bats.
Swav or Die.
I agree, I think this is a situation where we can stay within the organization
If we see Joe Dillion get more than 1 or 2 starts I may start to teeter on the edge of sanity though.

I don't think those options are bad
I just think Aybar and Zobrist could hurt us defensively and Brignac could hurt us offensively.
I think Grudz could give us production very similar to Aki. Good BA, Good OBP, Not much Power, Solid D.
Free Ray Durham!
HAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHAAH
you are dumb
AHAHAHAHAHA ray durham? Why don’t you just make a fanpost arguing for ricky henderson for RF?
Ricky Henderson is 47 and hasn't played in years
Ray Durham is 37, hit for a line of .289/380/.432 last year and has had an OPS below .785 once in the last 12 years. 2008 Ray Durham was better than 2009 Akinori Iwamura.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Rickey may outproduce Frenchy...
And if you want to use Rickey as a comparison, he had a bad year in Oakland as a 39 year old then put up a .315/.423/.466 line as a 40 year old with the Mets.
Is Durham better than Dillon?
If so, why not take a chance. When Bartlett comes back you can move Brignac down. If he’s terrible then the Rays cut bait…
This would definitely make sense
Durhams been one of the most consistent second baseman in the game. His only bad season in the last decade was in 07, and he had a .238 BABIP that year compared to a .310 career average. He then came back and had a .360 wOBA last year.
Most projection systems pegged him to about a league average hitter this year. If you knock of .10 points of wOBA because he has sat out for so long, add in -5 defense and a replacement level and positional adjustment, he looks like a 1.5 WAR player. Does Brignac really project to do that much better over a full season?
St. Louis Cardinals... defying win expectancy since 2008
Then the question is whether those guys would bring that much value
There’s probably not a huge difference between Aybar’s and Durham’s bats, but there’s a big difference in the defense.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
plus why not
If we can get him on the cheap I still think he is a better roster option to take Aki’s spot on the 25 man then a Brignac or Dillon
Free Ray Durham!
Aybar's UZR/150 over 220 innings is 14.1
He had a rough game last night, but it’d be foolish to throw him under the bus quite yet.
