M.V.Z. Most Valuable Zorilla!
There's really no reason not to give Mitch Talbot a shot next time Sonny's spot comes up.

I was thinking the guy with the 4.53 ERA isn't the biggest problem.

And what do the meaningful numbers say?
by R.J. Anderson on May 27, 2009 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, Davis would eventually take Niemann's spot
But he could use more time in AAA. Talbot isn’t really going to benefit from more AAA seasoning.

So, start Talbot in place of Niemann and Davis or Kaz takes Sonny's place.

Again, Davis will benefit from some more AAA time

I didn't say to make that move immediately.
by R.J. Anderson on May 27, 2009 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Hence my original point: Talbot starts for Sonny the next time his spot is up.

You're right. Sign me up for more Sonnanstine starts.

Here's the deal
I don’t think either Sonny OR Niemann is a long-term solution. Hell, Talbot almost definitely isn’t, either. But he deserves at least a shot, and there’s not going to be a better time than this. And Niemann still deserves more time. Am I throwing Sonnanstine out because of 2009? Of course not, he doesn’t deserve to be completely disregarded, but we can easily afford to demote him, either to the bullpen or to Durham.

What has Niemann ever done that Sonnanstine hasn't topped?
by R.J. Anderson on May 27, 2009 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Did you read my post?
But since you asked, I’m going to refer you back to the ERA. Has Niemann’s process been good? Of course not, but neither has Sonnanstine’s and the results clearly favor Niemann. Is his ERA going to stay there if Niemann keeps doing what he does? No, but he sure as hell deserves more than, what, 8 starts before we decide that he can’t be an effective pitcher.
www.raysprospects.com
by Imperialism32 on May 28, 2009 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions
I read your post.
And I asked a follow-up question. What has Niemann done that Sonnanstine hasn’t topped? Majors? Better. Minors? Better. What makes Niemann more deserving outside of ERA? Because if you want to improve, you better damn well look at the processes and not the results.
by R.J. Anderson on May 28, 2009 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions
Well, he hasn't posted a 7.66 ERA
Again, my point isn’t that Niemann > Sonny, it’s that Niemann deserves more than 9 starts to state his case.
www.raysprospects.com
by Imperialism32 on May 28, 2009 12:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Niemann has more upside so I'd rather keep giving him starts
plus Sonny can go down to Durham, Niemann can’t.
No he isn't. He has like 38 strikeouts to 30 walks.

With a 0.61 GO/AO
He’s still developing. His ERA and BAA are his only good stats really.

Wade Davis 9 starts 47 innings
Price 8 Starts 34 Innings.
I doubt Wade Davis was given too many more pitches over the 75 Price was limited too and averaged about an inning more an outing.

RJ do you know what Ziegler's contract is like
any chance the A’s are going to be trying to dump him? How about Devine when he is healthy. I know Devine has been around about a year longer (Braves called him up the year he was drafted) I wouldn’t mind trying to get either one of those guys but they may still be a year or two away from being shipped off
Didn't Devine get TJ earlier this year?

Talbot at least has to be TRIED as a starter
Look, in a year if everything goes relatively well, we have Shields Garza Kazmir Price Davis. I agree, Talbot’s future is in the pen, but you have to give him a shot at starting.

Great. centerfielder though. Prob will end up as a below average hitter with a good walk rate with a good amount of steals and little pop. Disappointing, but still a useful player.

We have different definitions of average
I compare him to his peers. His peers as in the other starting centerfielders. He is average at best with the stick in that regard. Of course if you read my statement I was separating “hitting” and “walking”. His walking makes his plate appearances far more valuable. But his actual hitting skills are pretty weak (for the past year and a half).
his shoulder was weak for a year of that
