Evan Longoria = Classless

Don't know if any of you were just watching the Rays/Sox game, but it was an amateur move by Longoria. Foul ball going down 3rd base - Longoria wouldn't have made the play, I dont care what anyone says. The guy who caught the ball caught it out of luck because the 2 guys in front of him missed the ball and it fell in this guy's glove, who I mind you had a Longoria Jersey on and was there with his 6 or 7 yr old son. Longoria proceeds to throw a tantrum on the field while staring at the dad. Made the guy feel like a complete ahole I am sure. The dad was apologizing. You could read Longoria's lips as you all know what that looks like when watching sports and an overpaid athlete gets pissed.   Just lost all respect for him. Not even close to being like the Bartlett play -- Rays had a 2 run lead in the 9th, there were 2 outs, and they weren't 5 outs away from the World Series.

One of the most classless acts I have seen in quite some time.

Oh please.

Evan was giving his all to get the 27th out, home fans are supposed to give their own fielders a chance to get the ball. Evan very well could of gotten that ball, and was just pissed off that he couldn’t bring it in.

This

Evan could’ve easily made that catch and game would’ve been over. If the Rays would’ve lost that game that guy would’ve gotten a lot worse than a pissed off Evan Longoria.

It's just one of those things...

Would you rather Evan not go hard after it and then have no reaction?

Anyone playing competitive sports gets upset when something happens that impacts there performance. Evan had a read on the ball and the fans were in the way. I imagine the fan understands Evan’s reaction and I’m sure the fan won’t go after a ball like that again.

At least he has a ball and a story.

Were you at the game?

And by at the game, I mean, actually there, watching it in the stadium.

Biggest rival for the Rays.

Last out of the game and Longoria was in the heat of competition. Every time I seen Longo at a game he is signing tons of autographs and having fun. Piss off with your idiocy conclusions troll. Percival after the game was over looked like he looked right at the fan and curse right at him. Wondering if anyone saw that?

Good, it was a complete ahole move by the guy. You get the hell out of the way, thats protocol.

You condemn yourself with this statement:

“Just lost all respect for him.”

You have seen one incident that you do not like and you draw a global conclusion from it. Aside from the fact that if anything what you describe might just as easily lead one to admire his competitive spirit, the resentment you display is childish.

Evan had every right to get angry at the guy…he shoulda gotten out of the way. I understand that you wanna get the ball for your kid or w/e but you know what if longo catches that ball he prob gives it to the kid anyway so yea, just saying

by CCisawesome on May 3, 2009 5:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Evan would have caught it

the second replay (shown on SUN) shows his glove right under the fans when he caught it. The fan deserved to be berated, at Fenway if you don’t try to disrupt the other teams player from catching the ball in the stands you get booed out of the stadium, there is nothing wrong with what Longoria did. Nice to see you troll within your first five minutes of belonging to draysbay.

Though in general, I agree with you. It’s not often something good comes out of the young adult with a baseball glove.

That is why they call those people autograph hounds!

I caught my only bp home run with a glove yet my brother got a foul ball (upper decker!) without one (and I was in the consecissons escorting someone for food).

So I am mixed on those gloves above 13 comment yet I am annoyed when those 40 year old men go out of their way to get a foul ball.

None of those guys in the front row cared whether or not that was a catchable ball. They wanted their EBay souvenir.

You have a responsibility in the front row like that

You back the F off when the visitor hits a foul ball so your team can catch it. When the Rays hit a foul ball like that, you’re all up in Mike Lowell’s business so he doesn’t catch the ball.

Fan was a douche – typical of those who sit in those seats who have little knowledge of the game but money to burn on the seats.

I understand both points of view, here

But I can’t imagine the odds were remotely in the Sox’s favor of taking the lead anyway. The guy was obviously upset about it – apologizing right off. He was, I imagine, just excited to catch a ball at a game. AND, it was tipped into his glove. AND, it wasn’t automatic for Longo to catch it.

But, I appreciate Longo’s effort and determination to win. I just don’t think it was necessary to get on the guy like that. Especially when, in the scheme of the game, it was pretty insignificant.

He should have known to get out of the way, but I am sure that wasn’t going through his head when the ball was coming right at him.

I do think Evan and Percys reactions were pretty crappy though. Especially Percy. Guy was a rays fan with his kid there. Evans at least was in the heat of the moment …understandable. Percys was after he got the last out. Percy is a douche too

I am entirely with Longoria (and Maddon) in this case,

but I think we may be missing a possibility about fan actions. It is also possible that the reaction is not planned or conscious but simply automatic. Even if it looked on the screen as if he intentionally interfered and then celebrated, he may simply have been acting without clearly understanding the situation yet. I wouldn’t characterize him any more than I would Longoria for losing his temper.

by bobr on May 4, 2009 11:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This is a good pt

It is bad etiquette, but there is an element of natural reaction. The mans eyes are on the ball as it gravitates towards him. He has no idea Longo is coming. Surrounding fans should alert him or Evan needs to say look out. As it turns out there were a few other fans guilty of the same thing. Its unfortuante. You typically don’t have to owrry about that in the 4th row like you do in the front row.

by FreeZorilla on May 4, 2009 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He didn't really celebrate

If you watch a replay again he starts to celebrate once he made the catch. Then he looks down and sees Evan and realizes what just happened. You could tell he knew he made a mistake almost immeadiately

by Sveet on May 4, 2009 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

totally agree here

The guy was in like the 4th row…you don’t really assume that a player is going to show up in the 4th row.

If you’re going to defend Evan’s reaction (which I think was a little over the top) as natural reaction, then you have to give the fan the same benefit of the doubt on reaction. If you’re at a game and a ball is hit in the air…you watch the ball, not the players. Especially if it seems to be coming towards you.

by TallMatt on May 4, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can relate to the guy

I was in CF a few years back, up against the wall, Baldelli took a great route to catch a ball against the wall, as he was closing in it looked like a sure catch, so I started going nuts since it was an awesome catch right in front of me, then as he’s closing in he must have gotten distracted by me and the ball deflected off his mitt, I think it led to a triple, and I have never been more ashamed. You get caught up in the moment as a fan, just as you do as a player. I’m sure Longo has no lingering feelings since he is an adult, but he had every right to be pissed off at the time.

Do what you love to do and give it your very best. Whether it's business or baseball, or the theater, or any field. If you don't love what you're doing and you can't give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You'll be an old man before you know it.

I just watched a replay of the game

and the criticisms of Longoria and Maddon are nonsensical. Longoria reacted immediately and then turned away, still talking but not at the fan. His response was perfectly reasonable within the proper bounds. And clearly the fan himself was upset, I think even before Longoria said anything as he realized that he had caught a ball Longoria had a shot at. He simply reacted to a high pop near him, Longoria reacted to his frustration and that was it.

As for Maddon, his post game statements were reasonable, fan-friendly and absolutely correct.

The Rays’ have so few fans, they really shouldn’t belittle the couple they have

I am going to go buy a Longoria jersey, head over to a playground, and swear at some kids. Evan is my role model.

These overpaid players can shut their yaps. BIG DEAL. Half the time if they played decently the team wouldn’t be in that position. It’s part of the game. Better thank God for fans. They pay your salary – which is overboard as it is. Players – SHUTUP.

I am a fan, therefore I pay for Evan's salary.

As his boss, I demand five home runs tonight.

I check this site a couple times a week

For threads that look like they have the potential to be hilarious/interesting, and this looked like one of them. In reading it, I felt the need to defend my honor from a comment that I came across incidentally, and I did.

I don't know what's funnier the idiots acting outraged or the outrageous acting like idiots

Do what you love to do and give it your very best. Whether it's business or baseball, or the theater, or any field. If you don't love what you're doing and you can't give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You'll be an old man before you know it.
