OT: How is this for pitcher abuse (NCAA)
NCAA Regionals - Texas vs. Boston College The game is currently in the 21st inning. Texas closer Austin Wood entered the game in the 7th inning of a tie game. He wouldn't leave until the 20th inning. He pitched 12.1 innings before finally giving up a hit. Final line: 169 pitches with 14 strikeouts, 4 walks, 2 hits over 13 innings. You see a lot of pitcher abuse around conference tournament and regional time (Rice!), but this takes it to a whole new level. Supposedly, this is now the longest game in NCAA D-1 baseball history. On to the 21st inning...

The kid is a closer and pitched two innings the night before vs. Army.

Game still going
Just finished up the 24th. THe reliever who replaced Wood has now gone 4.2. Texas is still on their 3rd pitcher, BC is on their 7th.

Few things are enough to make me get out of bed at this late hour
Seeing a game in the 24th inning? That does it.
RD over and out.

His career is over before it began.

Does anyone know if this kid is is a prospect?
If he’s not then I’m okay with this. Let him “empty the gun” if his baseball career is going to be over. Otherwise it’s abuse, no doubt.

He is/was Texas' best pro prospect.

So was Huston Street at one time
After he cleaned out his locker he hasn’t been all that good.
Do what you love to do and give it your very best. Whether it's business or baseball, or the theater, or any field. If you don't love what you're doing and you can't give it your best, get out of it. Life is too short. You'll be an old man before you know it.

Fringy.
He is considered a pro prospect (I hope we take the Rice pitcher!), but definitely not at the level of recent UT pitchers like Street or JPH.
For fun, here are some of the records broken in this game.

Fifth year senior, fringy stuff
So probably not much of one. Probably a 3rd to 7th rounder.

Clarifying
He only goes that high because he should be a very cheap sign. In terms of talent, he’s more like a late round pick.

So then I don't have that much of a problem with him. From what it sounds like his chances of making it to the bigs are slim.
This is probably the biggest stage an most important games of his life. Have at it.

Pushing a guy from 20-30 pitches to 169 after pitching the day before
If he has any shot whatsoever at the majors, and this kid does (possible LOOGY), it is clearly irresponsible. It’s not like Texas, a consensus top five program, didn’t have other competent alternatives. Instead, he throws 199 pitches in the span of about 28 hours.
Also, he’s not a fifth-year senior. Just a regular senior. He’s a soft-tosser, so I suppose that softens the blow somewhat.
If there is a silver lining, perhaps all this attention ten days from the draft will improve his draft position and he gets a few hundred bucks more to sign.
And to be fair, Boston College should not have let their closer Mike Belfiore throw 129 pitches. He’s a truly legit prospect, a big lefty with a low-to-mid 90’s fastball and good slider.
It’s just not right the things that go on during conference tournaments and the regionals when it comes to pitchers.
Today, we are all Honkballers.

I would say what FSU is doing to Ohio State pitching is more abusive
32-0 in the 5th just 1 out.

Ending up being 36-7
In the course of 24 hours we get the highest-scoring tournament game and the longest NCAA D-I game in history. Unreal.
And that doesn’t even count the ultimate grand slam by the Gators in the WCWS qualifier.

Any idea why pitchers in previous generations were able to pitch substantially more than modern day pitchers?

They weren't.
You just never heard reports about guys blowing out their elbows because nobody knew about such a thing happening.
