Tampa Bay Rays Attendance
The Bay area...Rich in history, beautiful neighborhoods, fantastic weather but no market for Major League Baseball!
It baffles me to listen to local radio talk show hosts every morning asking for the answer to why the Tampa Bay Rays' attendance is almost non existent when the answer is clear. Plain and simple, there is no market for the product being put out on the field!
The reason for last year's interest is also evident. I can summarize it with the words band-wagon fans. These fans got caught up in all the hype and hoopla and wanted to be part of something exciting in the world of sports. It is understandable to want to be part of something that isn’t usually offered in this area, that being a baseball championship. However, that does not mean you have built a loyal fan base that will be chomping at the bit to return the following season.
Lets be realistic here folks. As much as radio talk show hosts panhandle for fans, they cannot force individuals to embrace The Rays. This cry for nurturing is quite pathetic. Much like Byron Leftwich, the excuses of the stadium being too far, the economy taking its toll, or the fan base being too young are all smoke screens. The truth is The Rays aren’t as good of a baseball team as many thought they were or make them out to be. Last year was a fluke much like the passion shown by Rays fans who quickly call for players to be traded or make the determination that the coach has done all he can and does not have what it takes to take The Rays to the next level.
With a record of 11-16 and a half game above the cellar in the American League East (only above the team they lost to last night) it is laughable to hear talk show host Dan Sileo say The Rays are one of the best teams in all of baseball. With an attendance of 12,658, I would be embracing the Yankee, Red Sox, and other opposing fans which frequent The Trop or the doors would have to be closed for good today. Show some dignity and let the attendance be what it may. If the end result is The Rays move to a market where they are wanted then that is a win for The Rays, MLB, and their new fans. Those few true Rays fans who remain, can track their team from a far. Why not? The New York fans, Boston fans, and all other area transplants do it for their teams. If the Rays have to be moved it is because they weren’t really wanted here to begin with.
The Kansas City Royals attracted almost 22,000 fans on a Monday night. Why? Because they are loyal baseball fans in Kansas City and year in/year out, they support their team. It is ludicrous to expect life long, die hard fans of other teams to switch and become Ray fans just because they have moved to this area. Those fans would be showing the same loyalty to their clubs that current Ray fans show to theirs. Love for your team is love for your team, regardless of where you live, their record, or what obstacles get thrown at you!
I am not a Rays fan but I am a fan of the best sport in this world in my opinion and that is baseball. I have frequented The Trop this year only to experience a minor league feel. Regardless of the opponent, the off timing of annoying cowbells, or the amusement of the opposing fans drowning out the few Rays fans with cheers of "Lets Go Yankees" I still get the feeling I am at a minor league game. The only thing major league is the price of refreshments. I am quite thrilled The Trop allows fans to bring in food and beverages.
One last thing I wanted to touch on in today's post is the hate delivered over the radio towards Red Sox fans for cheering a base hit that broke up a potential Rays perfect game. This was more built up aggravation on the radio host's part due to the Rays horrible body of work thus far more than hate towards the Sox fans who cheered. Believe me I can understand hating them. I would love to be part of baseball history just as much as the next guy, but not at the expense of my team. Yes Mr. radio host, you were wrong in your loud and whiny outburst. I can wait around to watch baseball history being made but would be overjoyed to have a no hitter or perfect game against my team broken up by a bloop single or infield grounder.

How can you expect a good fanbase out of a team who has only been decent for 2 years.
The Royals have been around since the 70’s. That is 40 years of Royals baseball in KC. We’re barely over 10. The Pirates are drawing less than we are should we move them as well?
And you don’t think Red Sox fans or Yankees fans don’t travel well in other parks? They show up in big numbers EVERYWHERE. Have you ever been to any other stadiums?
Your arguments are very weak.
Sign lady must die.
The Rays currently have an average daily attendance of around 27,500
That puts them dead smack in the middle of the league, at 15th out of 30. Call that poor if you will, but in this economy and how hard the Tampa area has gotten hit by it, that’s pretty damn good. If we’re assuming our attendance has got hit, say, 10% by the current economic crisis (and I believe attendance is down 7% all around the league), we’d otherwise be averaging over 30K a game. I don’t see a problem with that.
Also, drawing 12.5K on a Monday night against the Orioles is something to expect….even the best teams draw poorly on weeknights against crappy opponents. What matters in the end is our average for the year and that’s damn fine at the moment. There is a market here and while it may not be as large as say, New York, it’s definitely a viable market that can more than support the Rays.
Also, “With a record of 11-16 and a half game above the cellar in the American League East (only above the team they lost to last night) it is laughable to hear talk show host Dan Sileo say The Rays are one of the best teams in all of baseball.”
Seriously now? I stopped reading at about this part…normally I don’t side with talk show hosts, but he’s got more of a point than you do. The Rays are one of the best in the league; they’re just underperforming at the moment. Don’t draw rash conclusions on such a small amount of games; we made it to the World Series last year and the team is virtually unchanged. Just look at what they did against Boston….this team is strong.

One more thing...
KC’s current average attendance: 19.9K per game, 26th in the league
If that’s the sign of a “loyal fanbase”, I don’t want anything to do with it.

He forgot to mention that the reason Monday's attendance was so high for KC was
Zack Grienke was pitching. Having a decent chance of seeing a no-hitter, and about a 50% chance of seeing a shutout will do wonders for attendance.
Keeping in the spirit of posts like this
I will rec. I suggest others who like to rec do the same.
"Where we all wait in earnest with pudding in hand for the Upton comet to sail through the roofed skies, so that we may meet Him."
But why?
This guy claims after one month that last year was a fluke. Didn’t the Rays just take a series from the Red Sox, almost getting a perfect game in the process? The Rays are still +8 in run differential, a few more timely hits with RISP and the record would be a lot different. I don’t even get what the point of his whole post was. Ok, move the team to random city and see how many they draw against the Orioles on a Monday night. And mentioning how the Rays fans should embrace Red Sox fans, while calling the Rays fans band wagon fans. Are you kidding me? Whatever. Looking forward to next post.

We Rec horribly inept posts now by Kansas City fans who live in Land O' Lakes

How the fuck is this not a recommended post yet? Baffleing. It's got everything that "Evan Longoria = Classless" had going for it, plus twice the air of superiority

I think it's because it's too long winded for most people to read.
For example, I completely missed the fact on the first read through that he was a Yankees fan, not a KC one. It’d be like reccomending a 5000 word post in lorem ipsum.

I once accidently handed a potential client a presentation that was 25% Iorem ipsum. I still got the listing.

1. If you attended the Yankees games this year the stadium was far from empty
2. If you attended last year, there weren’t many Yankee fans to be found (Rays aren’t the only bandwagoners)
3. If you attended this year, it was the Yankee fans being drowned out.
Finally, feel free to sign your posts once you’ve established one iota of credibility.

I'll have a couple more coming this weekend
I’ve been nailed with work these past few weeks, but finals are about done.

For some reason that didn't finish
What I meant to say was that I’ve been nailed by work recently, but I’m almost done with finals. So yeah, there’ll be a couple things ready by this weekend.

I love attendance threads
13k is pathetic though. No doubt about it. It may be expected, but that doesn’t make it forgiveable. This team should not be drawing 13k any night of the week. This area does have a lot of “BJ Upton” type lazy people that don’t want to drive more than 20 mins. We also have tons of “fans” that are a combination of bandwagon, new, or roots for other teams. Thats just how it is right now. Hopefully the market will improve.
Also it is retarded to compare the Rays Monday game to the Royals Monday game. The Royals played a better drawing opponent. The Royals are also in 1st place and riding a hot streak. The Royals also started the best pitcher in MLB (my pre-season CY Young winner) who is seemingly throwing CG-SOs every time out. The Rays on the other hand aren’t playing great ball although they have the talent to win it all. And we were throwing a suddenly soft tossing 90 mph fastball lefty that walks a zillion batters. Huge difference.

Rays Attendance
Hey Sports Chief (snicker). Maybe instead of worrying about our fanbase attendance you should be worried about your Yankmes. Is it a coincidence that they brought A-Rod back against the LAST PLACE Orioles and not against us. Why is the highest priced team not able to beat the lowest priced team in the Al East. Heart that’s why. If you buy a high priced hooker (YANKMES) you don’t get love and that is what the players of the (Yankmes) are. The hooker doesn’t give you her heart no matter how much you pay. No matter how much you love that hooker, no matter how pretty she may be she is still just doing a job and that is it. Don’t think so Just look at Damon. Mr. Die hard Sox man he was until the Yankmes waved money and just like any good hooker he was gone. A-Rod just happens to have his best season before his contract is up. Yup just another hooker. Almost all the Yankees were somebody elses bitch before they put on the pinstripes. So sports chump next time you put on your favorite Yankmes jersey look over at your wife and ask yourself is my wife a Yankme fan and if so was she someone elses bitch.
Attendance!
People are talking about bandwagon fans. How the f__k does a newer team get fans without bandwagon fans. If the team plays well consistently those bandwagon fans become true diehard fans. My in-laws are die hard mets fans because one day his boss gave him a free pair of tickets to a game. He was a Brooklyn fan who felt abandoned. Fifty years later even his grand kids are die-hard Mets fans. I was a mets fan but having grown up in and loving Florida I felt it my duty to always root for my Florida teams. When I move to Florida in 1973 as a 8 year old kid I stopped rooting for the Jets and started rooting for the Dolphins. I was a kid it did not matter to me that the Dolphins were playing there best football ever. It only mattered that they were my home state team so three years later my hometown gets there own team (Buccaneers) and I have followed them religously ever since . This will also happen to the Rays it just takes time. Bandwagon fans still buy tickets. Last year some bandwagon fan jumped on the Rays and still is a Rays fan hoping they make good on the promise shown last year. Me being a Buccaneer fan it doesn’t matter if the Rays win or lose cause I have seen the worst and the best and survived both. In 1976 I became a Buc in , 1992 Lightning fan and 1996 a (Devil) Rays fan. The Rays move and I will go back to the Marlins.
The May 4th Balt. game
There are two areas you need to look at regarding Rays attendance for home games in 2009. One is that the overall average number of fans at the game for 13 home games is 15th in MLB, exactly in the middle of the pack.
But the other way to look at it is the percentage of seats filled for the 13 Rays games played so far. 60.3% of tickets for the games have been sold and that is also 15th best in all of baseball.
I think after 2008, the Rays are behind where most people would have thought they would be in terms of attendance, but it’s much better than the years and years of being last or close to last and having a sea of blue seats during a home game.
In regard to the May 4th game, I was there and must say I was disappointed in the crowd’s size. Having just taken 3 of 4 from Boston and showing signs of getting things rolling, to have a crowd of 12,658 (35.1%) show up is not a good sign. One would figure the numbers would be higher to start the year. With NY in town and all the giveaways and fan fare, it was sure to draw people out, the White Sox are a fairly decent draw and of course Boston is always going to be a big draw as well.
The Rays are 15-18, play two in Baltimore and then head home for 8 games (4 with CLE, 4 with OAK). We are now into the part of the schedule where it will show whether fans who dashed out last fall and got Rayhawks, got Cowbells, and caught Rays fever are still serious about supporting the team or will just play wait and see the way they did last May, June, July, August and part of September.
Come on out, folks, it’s still fun this time of year to go to a ball game. Go Rays, and I’ll see you there Thursday night.
