Quick Notes on Howell
JP Howell's year started off with some bad luck via a few well placed hits. However his last 4 outings certainly qualify as shaky on the whole. In his last 4 outings, he has totaled 2 IP. He has given up an earned run in 3 of the 4 outings. Additionally 2 of the 3 times he inheirited runners he has allowed them to score.
He has given up 6 hits, and more alarmingly 4 walks while recording 1 K. This is very inconsistent with 2008 and early 2009 Howell. Hopefully everything is ok.
Here is a telling stat. This year he has inheirited 11 runners and allowed 5 to score. I'm not sure if there is a name for this stat so lets call it a Firefight % of 54.5%. In 2008 he inherited 35 runners. Of those 35, only 4 scored for a FF% of 11.4%. Yes, JP Howell has allowed more inheirited runners to score this year than he did all of last season.
I'm a believer in JP but would probably be a little hesitant to bring him in with runners on base until he regains his form. In general Maddon is overmanaging his bullpen as opposed to staying with a pticher who has his stuff.

I know there is a name for the inherited runners stat
I think it’s just IR and IRS (inherited runners and inherited runners scored); I don’t know if it’s a percentage.
I think with JP it’s probably just a confidence thing. It wouldn’t hurt Maddon to send him out for a longer outing in a low-pressure situation (specifically, a situation where the team is down by 3 or more) and just let him throw a couple of innings.

I think ESPN.com had it.
IRS% or something to that effect.
