Return to form?: Maddon said he believes struggling RHP Andy Sonnanstine is going to step up, and he is eager to see if the right-hander can make the necessary adjustments tonight.
Sonnanstine (3-5, 7.66 ERA) gave up a career-high eight runs in three innings in his last start.
"Of course we want him to pitch at a better level than he is," Maddon said. "His ERA is very high, and he's had some difficult moments. We talked about it a couple days ago about him pitching more inside, but we've been looking even deeper, and we think we found some other items that are kind of interesting."

At least this is a strategical change and not a mechanical change.
Meh either way.

They said that 2 starts ago.
"Where we all wait in earnest with pudding in hand for the Upton comet to sail through the roofed skies, so that we may meet Him."

Why so many cutters?
Hes throwing 47% cutters up from 24% a year ago. His fastball is down from 32.7% to 22.7%. Slider use also down 7%.

Adam Jones fucking loves his cutter.
Because it cuts right across the middle of the damn plate.

His control is back
Only 4 walks in his last 30 2/3 innings. His K rate is still low for my taste (16 in his last 30 2/3) but his GB/FB ratio has been better in May and early June.
Based on his peripherals, I think he is a 4.50 ERA type pitcher going forward. And I’m fine with that in the AL East, particularly if Niemann ends up a pleasant surprise.
