Still not thrilled with the first rounder
But I like where they’ve gone since then. If they can get a big chunk of these guys signed, then I probably like this draft better than any of the ones since Stu and co. really took things over.

I just think as our 2nd and 4th rounders as our 1st rounder
but LeVon will be fun to watch
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
Why aren't you thrilled with Levon?
I’m not saying I am, but I would just like to get your perspective of why you don’t think it was a good pick.
Free Ray Durham!
Just seems to have an extremely low chance of making an impact
considering the type of player he is and the type of tools he has. A slap-hitting LF isn’t my idea of an ideal 1st round pick.

Your right the scouting reports don't paint a great picture
pretty much say he can hit and run, but doesn’t have much power, is not a great defender by any means, and his arm is terrible. That doesn’t sound like a 1st rd pick.
But they still had him ranked high so they must see something.
It’s funny because your read the reports on our rd 2-4 guys and they sound better.

His arm isn't great right now.
Callis speculated he may need another surgery, but also said his arm will be fine for center.

In the context though...
Callis’s statement was more along the lines of “well, if people can run Johnny Damon and Coco Crisp out in center, then there’s no reason you can’t run this guy out there.” I don’t think this team would let someone with Johnny Damon’s arm play center.
It’s true that he may just need another surgery though. I read somewhere that at one point he was throwing 90 off the mound, and if he can get that back, he has more than enough arm for center. The fact that scouts recently have said that his arm is ‘less than 20’ means that SOMETHING needs to happen for his arm to get back to where he’s even passable in center. Whether that means more surgery or just better rehab, I don’t know.

I read the 90 MPH thing too.
Which raised all types of question marks when people said his arm wasn’t very good.

Have we drafted
a guy who can throw 95mph yet? Its becoming hard to come by hard throwing rightys/lefty
We need Robots....The time is now Bud, Stern, and Goodell.
Seriously, Officiating Sucks in this Country
The coach from UT said Koronis throws low to mid 90's
Also, I would imagine some of the hs pitchers drafted in the top 10 rounds have projectable frames in which they could reach mid 90’s. A lot of the guys that throw in the mid 90’s in the Bigs, werent throwing that hard out of hs.
One of the better prep catchers from Florida.
Kiley loved him the first time he saw him:
. Austin Maddox, C
School & Hometown: Eagle’s View Academy; Jacksonville, FL
Specs: 6′4, 220, Bats R, Throws R
Skinny: Elite catching prospect showcases a plus-plus arm behind the plate and massive power with the stick belied by a durable frame and advanced hitting and receiving skills. Covered in depth in the top 5 breakdown. Florida commit.

eh. any of these commits would go to the minors if we pay enough.

Given the reports, we're throwing money to everyone we like.
Looks like we’re more than serious about keeping the system stacked.

This makes sense though
I’m sure Stu understands that this is the only way to keep the ML payroll low if we continue to field a .+500 ballclub over the next half a decade.
Maybe I’m just an old fashioned BJ suck-off-er. (Good call Sandy)

Well, not the only way
But there are only so many players (e.g. Hot Carl) that we can trade at a any given time that would return at least 1 high end prospect.

Boo hoo!
As a South Carolina alum anything that keeps Florida manageable is a plus.

why yes, yes I am
We had 2 magical Outback Bowl appearances at the beginning of the decade! I grew up rooting for UF but now utterly despise that school due to the virtually limitless painful memories related to their athletic program.

UF is fucking terrible.
Aside from the somewhat okay music scene, Gainesville is the worst place on the planet. The girls are terribly overrated, as well.
Tallahassee is worse

With a pick that late, it's probably more of a flyer than anything
If he dropped that far, it’s because he says he wants more than $1M (at least) to get out of his commitment. Maybe they luck out and get him to sign for second round money, but I doubt he signs. There are 3 or 4 other guys we picked who also fall into the same general category. Plus, if there’s one type of player not to throw big money at, it’s high school catchers.

Who was that Royal stud pitcher they got to sign?
I wouldnt give up on him
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
But he was a 3rd rounder
Big difference
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
still
It was thought that he wouldnt sign unless he was a early 1st rounder
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
They paid him early first round money
And this kid isn’t worth early first round money.
Anyway, BA says it’s a lock he’ll go to college.

I don't see anything saying we took Maddox, actually
Drafttracker doesn’t list him.

Ryan McCarney
I wonder if he’s related to Michael McCarney, who we took a few years back.

I'm fine with that late in the draft.
2007 we were taking them in the Top 10 rounds.
Tools Whore
Another flyer
James Pazos, LHP from Arizona. Here’s what ESPN had to say about him after a showcase last year:
James Pazos: Like the aforementioned Seth Mejias-Brean, Pazos is also the high school quarterback for his Highland high school and this summer he is going to be attending passing leagues and playing baseball in an event filled summer. This southpaw has an unorthodox delivery with an extremely high like, ala Dontrelle Wills, and touches 88-90 with his fastball. He has a very deceptive change up that he sets up well off of the heater which sits around 77 MPH. With a thick frame and a deceptive delivery, Pazos looks to be a high ceiling prep star with a bright feature.
- prospect in Arizona, committed to Arizona State.

That meant to say
Number 3 prospect in Arizona. For whatever reason, it autoformatted funny.

Is it time to prob waste a pick and take Evan Crawford yet?
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
45 rounds in the book
the signing(and unsigning) is gonna be fun.
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
Another interesting one we won't sign
Kalani Brackenridge will be playing cornerback for the Rainbows football team and shortstop for the Rainbows baseball team.

I wonder
If the Nats wind up not signing Strasburgh, they will prob get the first 2 picks in next years draft.
Has that ever happened?
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
No...
The rule was just implemented two years ago.
I’d be shocked if he didn’t sign. I don’t think he has the leverage to bully the Nat’s around and can’t imagine him missing out on the payday.
dont underestimate the stupidty of the Nationals
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
They'd get permission to re-draft Strasburg, then pick Bryce Harper.
Graham would then kill himself.

Giants are on my last nerve
I see they had taken Evan Crawford, same prick team that took Tommy Joseph
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
Round 50
I wonder who we end the draft with
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
The draft is over
Anyone know how many of each position we took?
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
Yeah.
3 C
2 1B
2 2B

Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
