Just a quick couple of notes on the games from Friday night:

-Desmond Jennings was 0-for-5 with two walks and Matt Fields was 2-for-7 with two RBI and three strikeouts
-Brandon Mann gave up four runs in four innings, but the Montgomery bullpen pitched nine innings of scoreless relief

Does anyone think Beckham will be a player worth a #1 pick?
I think we should have picked Posey
Rays baseball + Colorado Football= amazing

I think Beckham is going to be an above average player.

The key with Beckham is time.
It’s way too early to start worrying about wether he was a good pick or not. Let him go through the development system.
He is hitting .288/.355/.410 despite doing NOTHING versus(.409 OPS) LHP.

But Moore also got 7 Ks
and had 7 ground outs and no fly outs. Not a good start, but consistent with his year when he has struck out lots of batters and generated lots of grounders. He had been walking a lot of batters, but recently has cut down on those. He had 2 yesterday, not great but not awful. He did allow a home run and 5 hits which is a greater ratio to IP than usual.
I would wait a while before coveting another pick. Beckham is still a teenager who is holding his own in full season ball. He is walking more recently and has an OBP of .357. He is also showing some power with 12 doubles and 3 homers in 201 ABs and is not striking out inordinately.
For comparison, at 19 Jeter played in the same league and in 515 ABs had 14 doubles and 5 home runs hitting .295. He did walk a bit more as his OBP was .378, but his OPS was exactly the same as Beckham’s currently is, .770. Larkin’s first year was in AA ball, but he was 21 and in 255 ABs he had 13 doubles and 1 home run with a .331 OBP. Garciaparra also played in AA at age 21 and in 513 ABs hit 20 doubles and 8 home runs with a .338 OBP while Tejada began in low A as a 21 year old and in 264 ABs hit 15 doubles, 8 home runs and had a .346 OBP. All of them had an OPS in the .770 range. Only Jeter hit for a higher average, and that only slightly.

Great points.
It should be added that whether or not Beckham outperforms evryone in that draft (which isn’t likely) the pick was still a good one. Any one of the three (Alvarez, Beckham, or Posey) would have been fine selections there. A lot of people felt Posey had the lowest upside of the three, so much like we have in the past with much success we selected the player the scouts thought had the most upside. We can’t look back on it and say we should have taken so and so because we used sound reasoning to take who we felt was the best player. We have to be patient with him, and hopefully we’ll be rewarded with a star up the middle.

Uh
Jason, What do you know about Matt Gorgen in A+ Hudson Valley? He has some sure awesome stats in A+ ball and looks to be a promising reliever in the future. Link: Stats- Matt Gorgen.
