What's the latest on Fernando Perez?
I was just curious on what the latest was on Fernando Perez. I have seen him working out with the team before games and it appears as if his cast has come off but I have not been able to find anything. I know he had ligament damage and could miss the season but I was wondering if anyone knows how his rehab has been going and if he can come back soon, or if that is even possible.

I don't know where he is at right now or the timetable for his return
But since he has been/will be out for so long, he will definitely have rehab assignments before he comes back. Also, his main role with this team would have been as a pinch runner in late inning situations which he should still be able to do when the rosters expand, regardless of the injury.

Yeah
I suspect he’s heading back to Durham anyway, even if he recovers. There just isn’t a spot for him at the moment, unless we cut/trade Kapler.

Which we could do.
Nando offers more defensive versatility, he’s an elite CFer and the organization likes him from the right side of the plate. They strongly dislike him left handed.

Is there a point where you cut bait with the switch hitting experiment?

I know it's been discussed within the organization.
Ultimately it’s Nando’s decision. But the organization can choose to never let him hit left handed by only allowing him to face lefties. He’s smart enough to realize that if he can figure it out, it’ll make him significantly more valuable.

I don't think he was able to hit righties as a RHB either
Which is why he started switch-hitting to begin with.

I don't know, you're probably right. If he could hit righties right handed, he wouldn't have a reason to begin switch hitting this late in his career.
I just know that right now, when healthy, he’s only useful at the plate vs. lefties. Now his defense is amazing, so that will help him stick in the show and he’ll almost certainly take Kapler’s role on the team next season.

He writes in the free monthly programs they hand out at games
But I haven’t seen anything new other than that.
