Pedro Martinez Says He Is Negotiating With The Rays

Just when it seemed like the Pedro Martinez story had died down a little, Pedro has brought the story back to life. In an article from the Associated Press, Martinez says the Chicago Cubs and the Tampa Bay Rays are the teams that have "shown the most interest." Martinez then goes on to say that his agent is in negotiations with both teams and says there is a "good chance" he will sign soon. He expressed his interest to pitch for a contender (Rays are contenders!), but also admitted "there still isn't anything firm."

The Rays have yet to comment publicly on the whole situation and knowing the way this organization works we won't hear much from them. It's pretty interesting that in the past week we've gone from a Rays' employee just watching his friend to Martinez saying he is in negotiations with the team.

I can never cheer for tomy john after seeing Izzy

but we should claim Wheeler has it and sign Pedro, Bradford and Kaz need spots also, time for DL musical chairs because I dont see us just waiving Abreu

Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?

Are there mango trees in Tampa Bay?

I wonder how Fenway would handle Pedro in a Rays uni.

Wherever the red dot goes, ya bang.

Posted this in the fanshot but got no responses

Does anybody know a general ballpark amount that he is looking for?

5MM prorated is the amount floating around

And, its unlikely, as the Rays supposedly can’t afford it.

He isn’t going to get that from anyone, methinks.

Also...

Is there any concern of whether he would take a relief role? I can’t see the Rays signing him as starter immediately. Seems to me the two teams he is negotiating with need relief help. Is this an indication that his ego will “let” him assume that role?
