Trade scenario for Burrell, RJ pls weigh in.

I've read the Braves are looking for a right handed power bat, and there is a reported limited supply of them.  Is it remotely feasible for them to take Burrell and his large contract (~11mill remaining thru next year) for some middle relief help?  Under this scenario we could develop Joyce with more regular abs @ dh/rf triangle platoon w/ Gross/Zorilla, plus land our biggest need.  I know the bullpen has rebounded lately, but Wheeler is more suited for a limited role as his stuff swiftly deteriorates w/ limited margin for error.  Plus I think Burrell has more upside back in the NL (obvious reasons) and Francouer blows.

Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

Why would Atlanta want Burrell in right field?

I mean, if the price is a middle reliever, sure, they’ll do it. All teams will. Burrell’s worth more than that.

How does Burrell have more upside in the NL?

Maybe I’m just an old fashioned BJ suck-off-er. (Good call Sandy)

His whole career has been in the NL, meaning he knows the pitchers and has expressed how tough it is for him to DH.
Sayin that Burrell is worth more is based strictly on past performance. Using that same rationale, Milton Bradley and Magglio Ordonez still have above avg value. Dont be lazy RJ. The Braves best set up man, coupled w/ cap relief is a very attractive deal to me. Explain to me what value Burrell has for the Rays? Zobby has suplanted him as protection for Pena. A fat light hitting DH past his prime making 8 mill year isnt a great combo. oh yeah, his walks are still there BFD!!!

This is amazing.

You know my name, yet it’s like you’ve never read this site before.

Mike Gonzalez 2007-2009 (sum): 1 WAR
Pat Burrell 2007-2009 (average): 1.8 WAR.

So yeah, you’d make that deal, and so would Frank Wren. He’d then buy a lottery ticket, buy stock, and try his hand at Russian Roulette, because hot damn it’s his day.

let me tell if you, sir; if he wasn't fat I agree that we could keep him around

becuase right now he reminds me to much of a bowling ball and how I want to penetrate his orfices with my fingers and it quite obviously has an effect on how he plays baseball that stretches far beyond the fact that I must wash my hands now.

Trade em

I would like to see the Rays get someone who could close games for Burrell. And i agree he belongs in the NL he sure as hell isnt getting it done so far.I know all you NL lovers out there keep saying this guy is gonna hit well im still waiting if the Rays can get a good pitcher capable of closing or middle relief pull the trigger.

by Jason B on Jun 19, 2009 11:28 PM EDT reply actions

Please, please, please

the Rays do not need someone to close games. I don’t think any team needs one; in fact, I think it hurts teams to have one because 1) they end up paying more money for a pitcher than they would if he did not have the title of closer and 2) it means they probably will use him in an inefficient fashion, always saving him for 9th inning work. It probably also means that they convince other relievers that they can only succeed in particular innings thus limiting the manager’s flexibility against all logic and historical precedent.

For all this talk about closers, how many games have the Rays lost in the 9th inning this year? I can think of one, that Cleveland game, and actually, that game was lost as much by fielding mistakes as by poor relief as Choate had gotten the grounder that would have ended the game. Otherwise, as far as I can tell, since Percival and Isringhausen went down, if the Rays were leading in the 9th inning they won the game. So why do they need a closer?

I have heard the argument that having a closer allows the manager to set up the rest of the bullpen better, but I do not see that point. On the contrary, it makes everything more rigid. The key is to have effective relievers, and I don’t see why having someone called THE CLOSER improves the chances of that.

I have also read that with a designated closer the manager doesn’t have to keep getting pitchers up to warm up thus overworking them in the bullpen. He knows exactly who he will use in each inning rather than reacting as situations arise. Maybe, but I cannot imagine that is so critical an issue or cannot be managed.

Thanks to this comment, I think I smell some ironi-recs.

And I’m a NL lover because I can overlook a smaller sample size in favor of a larger, recent sample size?

by R.J. Anderson on Jun 20, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

We shouldn't ignore this sample either

IMO we do need to adjust expectations on PtB. Of course he isn’t going to finish with 2 home runs, but I think the days of him of him hitting home runs on a consistent 30-35 HR/year pace are over.

I think he will hit around a 20 HR/Year pace from here on out and finish with somewhere around 15

I'd actually trade him. In hindsight we shouldn't have signed him

Of course we didn’t know about Zobrists break out. I wouldn’t really even mind selling low. The key point is the salary relief.

by matthan on Jun 20, 2009 11:53 AM EDT reply actions

How much relief would you expect

at this point the Rays could wind up eating a good chunk of the contract.

Wait until he’s more sellable, then decide. Give him a month unless a good deal comes up.

Wow all you Burrell haters

ughh he came off the DL DURING INTERLEAGUE PLAY. He hasn’t gotten into any rhythm yet and there are no DH slots in interleague play at NL parks. Right now he isn’t helping cause there is no need for him. Wait till we get back into AL play before we keep bashing the guy. Everyone has lulls and peaks. He is in a lull and Ibanez a peak. Its just gonna average out
