An Update on Miguel Angel Sano's Status

Rather, the Pirates plan to place a value on Sano as they do all players, by talent level -- which the team views as special -- and by the market. The Dominican market for 16-year-olds, as they see it, remains below the outlier bonus the Athletics gave Inoa, as the previous range for elite prospects had been mostly between $2 million and $3 million.

-Post Gazette

This probably gives the Rays more of a fighting chance. Assuming Pittsburgh is serious and this isn't a smokescreen, the Rays can top the offer if they so desire. It simply comes down to the evaluation of Sano's ceiling and likelihood of reaching it. Who knows what transpires over this next month, but maybe Sano will be wearing a new Rays uni this time next year after all. He definitely could use an update to his current Rays attire:

SKP—- Hamilton, why was he left exposed? He supposedly had righted his own ship and was on recovery road yet the Rays took a chance and left him exposed. After all those years—stupid.
Jackson, like Upton “loaded with potential, great arm, electric stuff” and you state that the Rays would have to belly up 2 mill, what do you think Upton and his agent will demand? Will the Rays trade him away now that pay-up time is due or sign him to a lucrative contract. If memory serves, Longo, Kaz, CC and some of the other boys signed long term contracts but Upton, when offered, wouldn’t do it. Now that he has shown he isn’t all that he and others think, what do the Rays do? If, as you state and ownership states, they can’t afford much more in the payroll dept, they cannot afford to sign him—look at the payout with Burrell (16mil over 2 years) and you can plainly see their due diligence is suspect. Burrell sucked in post season last year, striking out an alarming rate—for sure, he has great and conistent past numbers but that is PAST..Percival also HAD great numbers in the PAST but this is present and Maddon (or whoever) doesn’t show much with talent evaluation; sticking with Kazmir these last 2 years until he stunk up the place and now insisting that “Upton will come around and Sonnanstine just needs better placement, Kapler is an important part of this team and Price needs more seasoning”.. All Crap..

Last I heard, he still hadn't signed

He was all set to sign with the Indians, then MLB came out and said they were investigating his age, then I’ve heard nothing since then, other than that the investigators were fired because they were getting paid off. If it turns out he’s actually 20, then he probably won’t get signed for much.

Looks like he’s currently playing ball in Dominican Summer League.

The quality of mercy is not strain'd,

It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
