Magic Land Vince Carter
The Orlando Magic are going with a "win-now" philosophy. And when I say "win-now," I mean in win-in-11-months-when-the-NBA-finals-are-next-year.
The trade gives the Magic another star in a lineup that already includes Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis. The deal might also convince Hedo Turkoglu, who can opt out of his contract and become a free agent on July 1, to remain with the Magic.
Orlando is hoping Carter, who has averaged 23.5 points over a 10-year pro career, will provide center Dwight Howard with a perimeter scorer who can create his own shot -- something they lacked in losing the NBA finals to the Los Angeles Lakers.
It's also an indication the Magic believe their time is now.
I wish my city had an NBA team.

I think I may have come around on the trade.
I hated it at first, but I think it makes them a legit contender next year. If they can figure out a way to keep Hedo or at least sign-and-trade him, then it they could be great next year. He gives ’em the real scorer who could create his own shot that they lacked sorely last year.
Nelson
Carter
Pietrus
Lewis
Howard
With a thin bench right now, but it could include Pietrus if they resign Turk or Gortat if they resign him along with Anderson. Throw in some older guys that would likely sign for cheap or if they get anything in the sign and trade for Hedo. Maybe they sign a d-leaguer, second round pick that doesn’t make a team, or a rookie FA. Either way they traded two peices of crap and a young up-and-coming player that will never be a star for a star caliber scorer who MAY be in search of a ring.

No less so than Lewis I'd say.
Or the rest of the NBA.

Oh, that's complete bullshit.
Vince Carter is the single biggest pussyfart in the league. Yeah, NBA players can be lazy, can take games off, but Carter’s taken entire seasons off. He also never met a training room he didn’t like.
Maybe he’ll feel motivated to perform for us – Van Gundy might actually have the balls to bench him if he doesn’t – but Vince Carter takes the cake when it comes to laziness.

The same could be said for Shaq.
We gave up essentially nothing for him when you consider we got Ryan Anderson back.

Shaq is a completely different animal. In his prime, he could get a way with it because he was a freak of nature.

He can still score, kinda board, kinda play D, and kinda pass.
He’s better than Hedo.

Better pure scorer, probably, but can he handle the ball like Hedo?
It’s an upgrade, but it could backfire very easily if Vince chips a nail or breaks a heel.

He plays when he's on a contender.
If they’re sitting at 10-20 then I’d worry about him.

I will continue to loathe him unles he submits a Hall of Fame type year.

Though he’s a lot worse at executing the pick and roll

He's better than Hedo in terms of abilities
But this is basketball, not baseball. A player with better skills doesn’t necessarily name the team better. An example is Stephon Marbury. Even though in his prime he was a top 5 or so point guard in terms of ability, he consistently made his teams worse, not better, in part because of the way he ran a team, in part because of personality clashes, and in part because he felt it was more important for him to pad his own stats than for his team to win games. A lot of the time, VC has had that stat-padding mentality, and it hurts basketball teams.

I don't disagree.
That’s why I originally didn’t like the trade. After more thought and discussion with some very smart basketball minds, I’ve come around. Anderson is a pretty underrated player (like Lee), and Alston would have pouted on the bench. Battie is pretty bad. I bet it has little effect on their ability to re-sign either Gortat or Hedo. I’d rather they make a push with Carter now then be stuck with Hedo and Lewis LT.

There's definitely an effect on the ability to resign Hedo
Before, it was a possibility. Now, it ain’t happening, unless by some freak miracle Hedo doesn’t opt out. Though they can still use the tax exception for Gortat, if they so choose.

I wouldn't want Hedo at what he'll command.
He’s going to get overpaid. He isn’t young, and he isn’t that good. They already have Lewis locked up to far over what he’s worth. They would have no shot keeping D-Ho if they re-signed Hedo. I could be completely overvaluing what he’ll get, but I just see him getting a stupidly big deal. That team got lucky to get to the finals once and got exposed, and with Carter they have a chance to be the best team.

I don't necessarily disagree
Although I don’t think he’ll get mega money. Every other free agent market has slumped this offseason, and I expect the NBA to do the same. Also, the teams with lots of cap room are saving their money for next offseason.

I like it too
I don’t think our depth is any worse than it was last year. I love Lee, but what a difference when the game slows down at the end. Maybe I’ll never have to see Shard put the ball on the floor again.

I like the trade IF Vince can come in and move the ball around as well as play his game
We don’t need another Steve Francis or T-Mac. If it means we can keep the dynamic duo of Gortat and JJ together then I am psyhed

Anderson has potential as well
Not as much upside, but he could turn into a Robert Horry type.

Sign and trade Hedo to the Blazers
for Travis Outlaw + filler. Then sign one of Rasheed Wallce, Antonio McDyess, or Brandon Bass with the MLE.
Nelson/Johnson
Carter/Redick
Lewis/Pietrus/Outlaw
Wallace, McDyess, Bass/Anderson
Howard/Wallace, McDyess, Bass
That starting five would be the best in the league, and you’d have three capable bench performers in Anderson, Outlaw, and Pietrus.
Hello.

I'd like to hold on to Gortat
he’s got great stats (albeit he mostly doesn’t play side by side with howards), we’ll have anderson to take Batties place, and I agree on Sheed he would be a great addition, as long as he isn’t washed up, he can spread the floor by shooting the 3 and help out in the paint.
