6/29 GDT: Tampa Bay Rays @ Toronto Blue Jays
Tampa Bay Rays at Toronto Blue Jays, Jun 29, 2009 7:07 PM EDT
Big series right here.
As for a site note. When I joined DRB, the site averaged 6k visits a month. We just broke the 100k barrier for the month of June and we average about 3-3.5k a day. It's been a long time coming, and I want to thank everyone who helped to spread the word about this little place.

Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

You however, are a class act.
Well not really, but the difference is like light years.
Well, not really, but at least I don’t get tired of you as easily.
Well not really, I don’t like you at all. Banned.

It took DRB nearly four years to reach one million unique visits
We are seriously headed towards one million unique visits in 2009 alone. Thanks to everyone in the community for spreading the word and thanks to the staff for putting out the best stuff around.

Thatll be hard to do if Edwin keeps pitching like this
He is well in the top 10 in tRA and like 12th in FIP
Hopefully our guys dominate and lead us to a World title, but it is becoming very likely that we missed on Jackson for whatever reason

Eh he is doing okay.
Edwin and Verlander have been by far the best 1-2 punch in the league this year

Sonny wasn't bad
Sonny certainly deserves to be in the majors. You can make a very strong argument he is the most qualified minor leaguer right now.
I doubt it takes him too long to get himself straightened out, he'll just have to wait until he gets an opportunity to come back up.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
He didn't have this problem last year, there's nothing physically wrong with him.
Also, he needs to figure out why he’s hanging so many off-speed pitches. That’s killing him right now too.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
I would

I think:
Greinke (only Royal)
Halladay
Verlander
Hernandez (only Mariner)
Beckett
Braden (only A)
Those should be locks IMO
Weaver should make it if Hunter makes it
Lee shouldn’t make it since Vmart should be AS catcher
However past the locks I’d order it
Jackson
Lee
Shields
Weaver
I do think there is no way Sabathia should make it. Too many other pitchers with equal or better stats

Maddon is a pretty unique guy
I wouldn’t be shocked if he puts in the best players (in terms of first half 09) rather than the guys with the best public stats. Braden has been the best A by a considerable margin IMO
Think it's more likely...
that it’s a Matt Holliday selection or a reliever (Wuertz). As unconventional as Maddon is, I don’t think anyone wants to spend the whole weekend hearing how stupid they are from the MSM for bring a starting pitcher with a losing record, and you know they would,
Boom. Outta Here.

The problem is that umpires don't call the strikezone
I think this is the biggest problem with Upton and he’ll refine that over time. His eye is perfect for the real strike zone, but he doesn’t adapt based upon the umpire.
I realize something there
If it goes over his head, BJ gets a single probably cuz how far was fat fuck gonna go?

can they stop almost running into each other then?
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Scott Kazmir 5. Jeff Niemann
Ideally, you don't want your pitcher only using his defense.
Since 30% of those balls in play are going for hits.
by R.J. Anderson on Jun 29, 2009 8:57 PM EDT up reply actions
seven S.O. (halladay) vs. one (niemann markus) = 4 (runs) to 0 (runs)
not proportional to the 30% deal. You pitch away from contact (results in more misses) = more runs
Without checking, I doubt Niemann has more whiffs than Halladay tonight.

by ReasonableDoubt on Jun 29, 2009 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions
I think the scary part with Neimann is he has been really consistent this year
If he can improve slightly while keeping the consistency he could be really good. But if he doesn’t then he is just going to go out there and give you a 4-6 FIP every game. Hard to complain, but unless you have a good offense it isn’t going to translate well
Niemann is average, Delmon is ok for AA
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Scott Kazmir 5. Jeff Niemann
The thing is he hasn't really pitched that great
This game is a lot of smoke and mirrors. He hasn’t been bad by any stretch
I think Neimann will be a #4 or #5
However he’ll end up with the mainstream stats of a #2 or #3 due to our offense and defense. Someone will be willing to overpay
if they wanna overpay, especially with a C
then bye bye Niemann
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Scott Kazmir 5. Jeff Niemann
but hasnt he kicked his injury issues for a few years now?
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Scott Kazmir 5. Jeff Niemann
Of course it would
But he isn’t going to get much better than this IMO and he is greatly helped by the team he is on.
Understood.
I just wonder if any team will truly “overpay”. Some will see his averageness, others will have reservations due to his injury history.
I guess it depends how you define overpay
I’m kind of assuming teams are properly valuing his injury risk so that is already built in.
I think teams are going to be like OMFG a rookie with 14 wins future allstar!!!!

Just start the 9th with a strikethrower. I’m all for Balfour if we get in trouble, but we need to be in no walks allowed mode
I don't know if he truely is supposed to be used in low leverage, but why Maddon runs him out there to put out fires I have no idea.

Hello.
I wouldn't say we have too many overrated pitchers.
by R.J. Anderson on Jun 29, 2009 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions
No we don't
I do think if we were able to somehow showcase a pitcher for 10+ starts such as a Neimann, Talbot etc every year we would be able to boost their value enough to get a really good return on them at the deadline. Of course this team really doesn’t have many holes, but I’d love to be able to do something like every year to buy a Type A guy to push us over the top and then get the picks.
Like I wouldn't be opposed to a..
Neimann + Navi for Vmart type trade. We get him this year and next (if we want to exercise the option). Obviously Sonny takes Neimanns spot and we would easily be the favorites to win it all this year

Also, Navi is one year removed from the all-star game. The only people who would realistically think he's garbage are us.

But really Neimann's value should be up considerably from last year
