Oh Dear
According to multiple team sources, several of the draft’s best high school players blew them away when they revealed their price tags. California lefthander Tyler Matzek, the best prep prospect in the draft, wants "precedent-setting money," which is interpreted to mean that he wants to surpass the record $7 million guarantee for a high schooler given to Josh Beckett and Rick Porcello. Texas righthander Shelby Miller, previously believed to be signable for around MLB’s bonus recommendations, is asking for $4 million.
New Jersey outfielder Mike Trout (upwards of $2.5 million), Texas outfielder Slade Heathcott (upwards of $2 million), Florida third baseman Bobby Borchering ($2 million) and North Carolina catcher Wil Myers ($2 million) all want top-10-pick money. Oklahoma southpaw Chad James seeks $1.75 million. Previously, Missouri righty Jacob Turner and Texas lefty Matt Purke alluded to Porcello money, while Georgia outfielder Donavan Tate will cost $6 million or more.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
I'm not that surprised
Everyone is trying to get signed by the teams that will open up their wallets, and there might even be reverse-collusion going on here (which would be perfectly legal). Unless MLB institutes pure slotting, this will continue.

Ugh
The rich get richer. Top 10 talent can be had at both of NYY’s first round picks.
Is this a Strasburg effect?
No
But it comes from Boras. Players are seeing now that sitting out a year isn’t hurting the amount of money they get. Hochevar sat out a year and got more. Townsend sat out a year and got the same. Crow isn’t projected to get any less this year. There are some others I’m forgetting.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
But will it work for highschool guys?
It seems like a much better option for college players than for high school players. Wouldn’t a high school player have much more to lose?
We'll see how much Matt Harvey gets next year
He fell out of the 1st round in 2007 because of bonus demands, wound up being taken in the 5th, not signing and going to UNC, where so far he hasn’t really been great.

Not until just now Freud.
"Where we all wait in earnest with pudding in hand for the Upton comet to sail through the roofed skies, so that we may meet Him."
In 90% of the circumstances I would never say this
but I will be pissed if we draft a pitcher with any of our first 3 or 4 picks unless someone is just wayyyyyy to good to pass up. We need some positional depth.
Conversation starter: Anyone got any later-round sleepers?
Mine is Brian Moran, a UNC lefty reliever. Pedestrian stuff evidently, but he had a 1.95 ERA and an 88-8 KBB rate in 64.2 innings.
www.raysprospects.com
Pirates are like the perpetual '05 D-Rays in terms of drafting
“Huntington has emphasized that the organization’s draft needs to be judged based on the entire product and not the first round pick. He also recently mentioned that the club’s first round selection will likely not be extremely popular.” – MLB
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Speaking of the draft, any updates on Nick Fuller?
I could use a lap top
He didn't sign after being taken in the 25th round last year by Atlanta
He didn’t pitch for Walters State CC this year(where he did last year) so I have no clue if he even played this spring.

… slightly encouraging.
I’m wondering if Wil Myers falls to us now… or Hobgood. [I already want to call him Hobgoblin and am envisioning amazing gifs/memes]
anyone besides me more excited about the draft than the game tonight
any we aren’t even picking high this year.
I'm going to the game
:(
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Meh.
The MLB draft isn’t anywhere near as compelling as the NFL Draft because there’s a 0.01% chance any of these guys are going to make an impact next season. I’m way more concerned with Shields pitching well and the Rays getting back to five hundy.
A bit higher than that....

2. Mariners: North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley.
3. Padres: Georgia HS outfielder Donavan Tate.

when they’re likely the 2nd and 3rd best players available.

and I respect what he does. He’s got good sources too. His reporting is top notch. Good info in his books. Just don’t always agree with the way he puts together his rankings.
Tools Whore
Crow isn't one of the top 2 players available for sure
And there are a number of others I’d put ahead of Crow. As mentioned before, there were question marks with Crow, and sitting out a year is a debit in my mind.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Chances Crow falls to us?
Would anyone give it a 1% chance?
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
Dave Cameron just posted this on LL from his scout friend:
"If you guys are feeling spendy, you might get Ackley and Crow. I don’t think he’s going in the first round if Seattle doesn’t take him."

If we can get him at 30 and not have to pay him top 5 money
Then he’s still probably a good pick. That second caveat is iffy though.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
You're probably right
But stranger things have happened. If he drops to 30, that means other teams are taking his salary demands seriously.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Crow's asking price is going to be around the same as last year.
He’s going to try and save face. That’s one of the reasons he’s dropping.

Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

yes but what really annoys me is the draft being so close to game time
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
Callis now has the 9 out of the top 10 locked down.
1. Nationals: San Diego State righthander Stephen Strasburg.
2. Mariners: North Carolina first baseman Dustin Ackley.
3. Padres: Georgia HS outfielder Donavan Tate.
4. Pirates: Boston College catcher Tony Sanchez.
5. Orioles: California HS righthander Matt Hobgood.
6. Giants: Georgia HS righthander Zack Wheeler.
7. Braves: Vanderbilt lefthander Mike Minor.
8. Reds: North Carolina righhander Alex White.
10. Nationals: Stanford righthander Drew Storen
Mike Minor to the Braves surprises me a lot, but apparently from what I’ve read earlier in the week, they’re not willing to go over slot, so that makes sense. I really hope there is reverse collusion going on and I hope the agents destroy buds system.
Tools Whore
this is weird
how do Turner/Matzek get out of the top 10?
the thought of one of them now dropping to nyy/bos is making me sick to my stomach
"I really hope there is reverse collusion going on and I hope the agents destroy buds system."
I don’t. Budgets are finite. Spending more on prospects means less money to spend on other things.
If it does happen, I hope MLB can bring the hammer down on excluding the draft from the CBA. A true slotting system (maybe with a mechanism to negotiate the slot amounts with the union) would be ideal.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Oh god how did I forget the potential shitty news
Rays pick 30 right after the deep pocket Yankees, even if we wanted Crow, they would prob steal him.

well Ryan Zimmerman and Ross Detwiler didnt see much time in the minors
but I think he actually stays in the minors til next season
Rotation: 1. James Shields 2. Matt Garza 3. David Price 4. Jeff Niemann 5. Andy Sonnanstine...... Coming Soon: Wade Davis......Scott Kazmir?
He'll get that one day clause that Weeks got.
I think they might just take advantage of it and get a huge spike in attendance giving him a shot and giving the Nationals a hell of a lot of buzz. First guy since Olerud to go pro straight out of college, best prospect ever. He’s the exception where the positives outweigh the risks.

but it turned ok…
How are they doing this?
Still at work, so I am wondering how they are doing? Are they announcing the picks at the podium, how long does each team have, etc.?
I think each team has 4 minutes in the first round.
Then 1 in each subsequent round.
by R.J. Anderson on Jun 9, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Maybe
Traditionally, it was done bang-bang-bang style. Maybe because it’s televised, they’ll actually wait the time between picks.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
4*30 = 120 minutes.
Which is two hours. They didn’t start at 6 exact, so it’s probably around 8:30.
by R.J. Anderson on Jun 9, 2009 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions
I get that part
I’m just saying that IN THE PAST, teams haven’t waited the full 4 minutes between picks. They literally used to do it one right after the other, and maybe 4 or 5 teams would take the time to wait to make their picks.

If you don’t want a high school pitcher here (Zack Wheeler), and you don’t want to go over slot, who’s the next-best guy? Alex White? I agree with that point, by the way. I had Sanchez 29th on my board. You have to value the catcher pretty highly to pop him 4th.

Thats my only concern
We had a far higher chance of getting Washington with our 2nd pick. Plus we probably could have found similar guys to him.
But who knows? We shall see how this turns out in about 4 or 5 years
Good Presiding skills.
A real field general. Has potential to run the show one day. Uses wood to eat his food. Can be the foundation of the team. Good for the club-house. Huge upside with clarity and foresight to lead the league. Could end up serving two or three terms with the same team.
