Rays won't cut payroll this season for the sake of saving money
By itself, this isn't interesting. What is however, is that there is finally some revelation around the team's expected attendance this year. They hoped to be around league average (roughly 31k). Right now, they sit at 22,700, which is good for 26th.
Sternberg also implies that he won't be cutting players to save payroll at the cost of being competitive unless they're rebuilding. This gives the implication that players like Scott Kazmir and Carl Crawford are more likely to stick around until the end of their contracts.

So I’m guessing either medical condition, lack or transportation, or a trespass warrant. If It’s either of the first two I will gladly offer to take him to a game just to actually give him a little credibility when he bitches.

TGN1 had a good thought about attendance.
People look at it like the W-L record, yet all the underlying metrics, the merchandise, TV ratings, etc. are up, which is like the peripheral stats to attendance. The Rays aren’t stupid, they aren’t just looking at how many people go to games against the Royals.

I truly believe you're right
If fannies in the seats were the answer, why are all the new stadiums lower in capacity?
by Raymondo on Jul 10, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They're charging more for seats and suites in new stadiums, and having to use fewer resources and less staff.
So net revenues are usually higher.
They could build bigger stadiums, but the staff employment costs hit diminishing returns when the stadium is half-empty. It’s cheaper to staff a 30,000 seat stadium that only sold 17,000 seats for a game then it is to staff a 38,000 seat stadium when only 17,000 that only sold 17,000 seats for a game.

But, and this is a big but
if we had a 50K stadium, we’d sell it out on a few occasions, and thus have a higher yearly attendance
by Raymondo on Jul 10, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
This so hard.
I think we’ll see a big boost in obvious attendance later in the season as the W-L record catches up to the third order wins. Hell, last year, I thought we sold out pretty consistently – or close to it – when it became apparent the Rays were going to be in the playoff race in the second half. If average attendance is all ready up, and then gets a big spike for the second half, I think you’d have to consider that a victory for the Rays – without even including improved merchandise and TV ratings.
by Suttree on Jul 10, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Let's say they average 28K for the remaining 42 dates
that’s 1.1 million, added to the 885K they, have still leaves them short of 2 million
by Raymondo on Jul 10, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No doubt
I would love to see 1st half #‘s compared to 2nd half from last year. it would have to be similar this year. When it gets to the final stretch and the games have a higher intensity and feel like they mean more it’s gonna go up like BJ’s BA.
Also, I heard a guy from bright house sports say the Rays TV numbers are “thru the roof”. Silverman said yesterday that league average is not an expectaion it’s a goal. They know the viewers are there it’s just getting them to the park.

I don't disagree. I've tried to search for ratings data. I try every week, but turn up junk.

Roughly $32 for tix; if you get a hot dog and a soda a piece, its, what? $48 more? Where else are you going to get that kind of value anymore? $80 for ~3 hours of good ole American entuhtainment AND a very good chance at watching a great ballclub get a win. My friend had season tickets on the 3rd base line last.
There was this former Tennessee football player a couple rows in front of us. Quiet guy for the most part, definite redneck, trophy redneck wife (if those exist), obnoxious kid, drove all the way to the games from New Port Richey – pretty much every home game. Anyway, seemed like a nice enough guy, we’d talk to him pretty regularly, until one day he turns and goes,“Say, what do you think about interracial marriages?”
My Friend: Um, I’m cool with them.
Hick: I fuckin’ hate them. My daughter married one of those niggers – haven’t talked to them since.
My Friend: …. oh.
He redeemed himself when his kid came in a Jeter uniform during the Yankees series late in the year and he mocked his own kid relentlessly as the Rays were winning.

31,000 you mean?
And I almost agree. The current ownership has shown a tendency to underestimate. 31k seems like a reasonable estimate, which by nature, is unlike them. I would have figured they would have estimated closer to 26-27k.
That being said, at this point the average attendance this year is dangerously close to last year’s total. The Rays shouldn’t have to rely on a playoff push to bring attendance up for last year’s defending AL champions. Not that I really have much room to complain about it, I haven’t been to a game all year.

by kericr on Jul 10, 2009 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, 31 thousand...
And 31 thousand is a bit unreasonable, especially considering they have access to season ticket numbers as well.
I haven’t had a chance to look, but I don’t think the numbers are really that close to last year. The average may be, but that doesn’t account for opponent, day, and time of the year. The end of the season will draw more, so will games against the Yankees and Red Sox.
by tallyray on Jul 10, 2009 4:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

Does the general public know...
how reasonable the cost to go to a game is? Free parking in the main lot with 4 people, $5 and a free shuttle if that lot is full (which is very easy and quicks), food and water can be brought into the games, $10 gets you tix between the bases in the Upper deck.
It seems like every time I read something about this topic people are saying that it cost their family of four like $150 for the game. Obviously it can cost that, but it seems as though many are not aware of these family-friendly conveniences, and that you can attend a game for the same or less than the cost of a movie.
And with our home w/l record, it’s almost always an entertaining and exciting outing for a family (Phillies series opener excluded!)

but I hear people bitching about the cost at the games. Of course people on here would know , my point was the general public, the casual fan, which is who you need to get attendance in this market up to league average.
And I’m not sure what it means that no one in their right mind has a family of four…I guess that makes me crazy as I’ve got a family of five.
I’m jsut saying if more Mom’s and Dad’s knew how affordable it was, maybe more would go. It seems like most people don’t know this information.

I'm talking about the general public too.
Like, nobody makes this argument. You don’t see it in the Times or the Tribune, you don’t see it on local newscasts. The only people who make an argument that might resemble this are people who are blaming the economy for not being able to go to a game themselves. The only people who might actually bitch about the price are those who wouldn’t go to a Rays game no matter what, and haven’t even bothered researching it.
Bitching about price is something I’ve seen quite a lot of when pertaining to Bucs games, so I do know the difference.

ok
I read the Tribune online and have seen it more than once this season. But I live in Ft. Myers so I can’t speak to the TV newscasts. As a season ticket holder I can tell you that at the games I hear complaining regularly, not to mention the puzzling looks from people who are suprised when you pull food or water out of your bag that was brought from outside.
And to my point, I did not know that they would have discounted food at the game yesterday until I got there. You would think they would communicate that stuff better. That was my bigger point, people think it is “expensive”, and maybe it’s because folks don’t know what they can do.
I don’t really want to argue, just tossing in my two cents as a Dad who hears and sees what other Dads at the games are saying.

just an observation
it’s an observation. When I hear “I won’t do this again” at the games, because of the cost, it makes me wonder if more first timers knew about the things you can do, they would show up.
that was more the point than people complaining – that the team does not make known to the casual fan the cost saving options that are available.

I’m sure Stu told people this all the time when he was on the trading floor at Goldman many many moons ago. “Yeah, we’re willing to hold onto this because I think it’s a good long term investment”, while the salespeople are trying like crazy to sell sell sell.

This is a good point; but if he fire-saled, he's also scorching all of the fan good will he's built up the last couple of years.
I really don’t think he would do so anyway. Also note that it is stipulated that he wouldn’t do it during the season and it’s only implied that he won’t do it during the offseason.
Though I hate to admit it, I still think he tries to move CC during the offseason, and honestly if Kaz rebounds for the rest of the year, he’d be stupid to not try to do the same with him.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.

Would moving Craw be the end of the world?
All good things must come to an end and if that end involves raping an org, well hand me my codpiece and lets go to work.

Moving craw wouldn't be the end of the world.
But me agreeing with it flies right in the face of the delusions I had when I created my sig.
