Almost midseason thoughts.

Just some thoughts as we move closer to the all-star break

Star-divide

The rays really don't need to trade anyone unless we are getting to good of a deal to pass up. We shouldn't trade Wade Davis or any of our prospects for that matter unless at a unrefusable price. NO BOBBY JENKS. No bullpen no closers! We don't need them. All this talk about a designated closer needs to be put to rest. Maddon has something figured out that we should stand behind. Even if the closer fort the night is Dan Wheeler he will get the job done. Our bullpen has started clicking and there is no reason to fix whats not broken. Don't move the rotation around unless someone gets injured. I like seeing David Price James Shields Matt Garza Jeff Niemann and Scott Kazmir on paper. If i have any problems with the team it would be the 'rest' deal. Play the guys that are gonna win ballgames, thats all i ask. Let gross play everyday right field.

If anyone trade: Reid Brignac, or Tim Beckham

Get: Right fielder or closer

Im really high on fernando perez hopefully he will make a speedy recovery. Put him in right maddon. That would be a sickly fast outfield.

Rays (should be all stars): Bartlett, Zobrist, Longo, Crawford, Howell

Thanks Draysbay team for all your hard work.

So wait, which is it.

You say no closer, then you say:

Why would you trade two of your more valuable minor league assets for something you already established we didn’t need?

The Beckham distaste from some of you makes absolutely no sense.

Im sorry

I DONT want a trade.

but if one is going to happen my guess would be that. But I would trade one of the 2 shortstops because bartlett has definitely established himself as THE shortstop

Wow

I know i’m not as knowledgeable as all of you on here. I just wanted other opinions not constant b.s. telling me something I already know. Im a newbie just get over it.

Im a newbie just get over it.

We’re sarcastic as fuck here, in case you didn’t realize that.

I’m suprised you don’t think that a catcher might be something the Rays would want to trade for.

I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.

Agreed.

If we can’t get E-Jax, maybe Beckham for Street?

Until Next Time,

Nothing is wrong

E-JAX IS A LOCK TO WIN THE NEXT 22 CY YOUNGS, LETS GET HIM BACK NOW.

Not to be critical...

But would Fernando Perez in right make us a better team? Or are we shooting for the 1985 Cardinals?

by tallyray on Jul 2, 2009 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

I don't want to see him at the plate this year.

Next year a Nando/Joyce platoon could be uber-sexy

Meh.

Nando is the definition of a 4th outfielder, unless you really, really, really like defense.

by Suttree on Jul 2, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

In right or left?

I’m not sure Joyce would outproduce Gabe at this point and it seems there’d be better platoon options than Perez.

by tallyray on Jul 2, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

He would be replacing Kapler.

GK makes over a Million dollars, Nando makes 400K, with that savings right there they can add a bullpen arm to replace Bradford, and with his 3.5M they can cover all the arb cases except Garza, who will be offset by Percival.

Joyce again makes league Min where Gross is over a Mil. I would rather we run an 800k Joyce/Nando platoon out there

then a 3-4M Gross/Kapler platoon. Outside of trading Kaz/Craw we are going to need to trim some payroll from somewhere next year. I don’t want those guys to go. Also, don’t be swayed by the recent hot streak by the Ambiguously Gabe Duo. They both played over there heads in June. June is Gross’s best month that he follows up with a near worst (.002 OPS difference) July only to scorch in August again. Kapler’s June, July, August splits move in the exact same way. Sure it’s nice having a platoon that is killing the ball, but don’t expect it to last.

I said this last year in July and I'll say it again

while the saying is you can never have too much pitching, we do.

Price
Garza
Shields
Kazmir
Sonny
Niemann
Talbot
Davis
Hell Boy
Moore
Barnese
…still a couple other lower level guys too like Lobstien.

last year this list included Jackson and Hammel. We waited until the off-season to move them and got less, and in my guess a good amount less by doing so. Yes we made it to the WS, but how much of a difference would Niemann/Sonny have made over Jackson/Hammel. Hammel didn’t even get used much.

I think it would be another mistake to not move at least 1 if not 2 of these guys. Somebody could use Mitch Talbot as a 5th starter, same goes for Sonny and letting them sit in Durham until September is going to do nothing but lower their value.

by Dbullsfan on Jul 2, 2009 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

Bingo

This is exactly the point. Hammel is pitching lights out and we got jack squat for him.

by matthan on Jul 2, 2009 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Ehh...

Jackson and Hammel at the trade deadline last year were not going to be coveted as the final piece to the puzzle for any team, and they weren’t prospect-y enough to be used to acquire that same piece for this year’s team.

And Hammel doesn’t appear to be pitching lights-out to me. He’s doing well, and that’s good, and in retrospect, I’d probably take him over Niemann, but not over anybody else.

I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.

by kericr on Jul 2, 2009 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

We probably have the right set of pitchers given every variable (esp contractual)

However we certainly nowhere near maximized value for Hammel and possibly Jackson. Perhaps some of it was poor coaching and development and poor timing or something else.

Jackson currently has a tRA+138 (which could be top 5 for SP depending on the xouts restrictions)
Hammel currently has a tRA+116

In return we got an OFer who will probably turn out to be pretty solid and one pitcher won’t almost certainly won’t stick in the majors.

The organization definitely screwed up. Who and when? I’m sure the FO will research that.

Everyone knows who I place most of the blame on so no need for me to rehash it. The evidence is pretty strong.

by matthan on Jul 2, 2009 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm all for keeping Hickey as the watch the pitchers to see if they are tired guy

We just need someone that can actually coach. So Peterson for PC and Hickey for Watch to see if they are tired guy and beer after game guy

by matthan on Jul 2, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Mitch Talbot and Andy Sonnanstine don't care who the ML pitching coach is

they’re stuck in AAA, thus why we need to try to move them. and before the argument is that we need to keep the depth in case of injury, I believe Carlos Hernandez and Wade Davis are quite serviceable if we would need to call on them, maybe even Jason Cromer who has been lights out lately.

by Dbullsfan on Jul 2, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly, when we lose them is something we can control.

I find it hard to believe that we can get more value out of Sonny, Niemann, and Talbot in January than we can get now.

no

and the next one to suggest this is getting anthrax sent to their door

only spot i think we could upgrade is C

Navarro sucks this year, but we have the best offense in the league, he just sticks out like a sore thumb to me. how about Ivan Rodriguez for Heath Rollins?

Vikings lets sign Brett Favre and Marvin Harrison. Ricky Rubio please dont go back to Spain!

I think you need to lay off the Zimas and cosmopolitans, okay, pal?

Better watch out, or your girlfriends might start laughing at you.

by Suttree on Jul 3, 2009 1:43 AM EDT up reply actions

No zimas or cosmos

Just the Doobie Brothers and Bad company and some snuck in Jack Daniels Green Label to accompany many a beer, smoke, and gorgeous girl dancing on my leg.

We can upgrade at starting pitcher

Our SP has been weak this year. We are 23rd of 30 in FIP.
