[My] main nit would be that Cameron probably didn't emphasize strongly enough just how ludicrous Evan Longoria's contract is. Assuming the Rays exercise their 2015 option, for instance, the guy will be making $11 m. Those currently making more include Vicente Padilla, Oliver Perez, Eric Byrnes, Jeff Suppan and Carlos Silva. At least he'll get a fat raise to $11.5 m if they exercise the 2016 option...

Having looked at Pavano's contract.
Raymondo’s idea to acquire him isn’t a bad one.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 21, 2009 3:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It hasn't been a bad idea from the start
He has peripherals very close to Shields. His hit-rate is high, but look who is playing behind him. Trumpeting up the injury concerns could get them to kick in cash or reduce the asking price.

His LOB% has been horrific to this point as well you have to figure that would regress nicely with competence behind him

Interesting...
I hadn’t seen him say we should acquire him (just make derisive jokes about which of our pitchers he’s been better than), but I imagine he could be had for cheap.

Define cheap
Talbot? I would think they’d want a decent arm back.

No idea, but it can't be much.
He’s on a 1 year deal where the money is no issue outside the performance bonuses (based on starts and innings).
by rglass44 on Jul 21, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Absolutely not.
Plus Talbot is still hurt.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 21, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He has via email.
I didn’t realize that most of his money is tied into incentives he won’t reach.
• starts: $0.1M each for 18, 20, 22; $0.2M each for 24, 26, 28; $0.25M for 30; $0.3M for 32; $0.35M each for 33, 34; $0.4M for 35
• innings: $0.1M each for 130, 140, 150; $0.15M each for 160, 170; $0.2M for 180; $0.25M each for 190, 200, 210; $0.3M for 215; $0.4M for 225; $0.5M for 235

Crossing out the ones he's unlikely to reach.

Would you do Wheeler for Pavano?
Would they?

In a heartbeat.
They wouldn’t, though.
by rglass44 on Jul 21, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would.
Frees up Wheeler’s money and essentially sells high on him.

They’re 13.5 out.

None.
But they also have every reason to deal Pavano for something.
1. FA at year’s end, but not good enough to get a comp pick.
2. Not a candidate for an extension.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 21, 2009 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
One would think someone would offer for more.
I mean Wheels is an average BP arm that is likely being over-compensated.
by rglass44 on Jul 21, 2009 3:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not saying they'd take Wheeler.
They need infield help. I doubt Hughes or Nowak would interest them. Same with Johnson.

A guy to build around that isn’t closer-expensive. Their bullpen is a mess, still.

by Suttree on Jul 21, 2009 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If it involves Gross, I would.
Two cost-controlled seasons of an above average player for a half season of an above average starter with an injury risk and a non-elite and expensive reliever?

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 21, 2009 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
is this debate over Carl Pavano the starter?
why in the hell would we want to trade for a starter who isn’t either Halladay (basically an ace) and an top prospect with front of the line starter potential (if we decide to move C.C.). We don’t need to make a deal just to make a deal. Adding a guy like Pavano and no matter who he would replace in the rotation (and I’d even add Davis and Sonny in AAA) isn’t going to make enough of a difference to warrent whomever we give up unless it is 10 bats.
by Dbullsfan on Jul 21, 2009 4:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Did you read the thread?
The whole point is that Pavano wouldn’t cost much to acquire or pay. He’s not going to be a Type-B FA and he’s not someone the Indians (or Rays) should extend. He is an upgrade over Niemann for the next few weeks.
It’s not going to happen, but the cost makes it a lot more realistic than Halladay.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 21, 2009 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
What about Niemann or Sonny for Pavano + A prospect
I’m not sure who they have, but someone decent
by matthan on Jul 21, 2009 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
at what cost though
there are other teams with a more pressing need for another starter. Basically what I’m trying to say is that in a bubble acquiring Pavano would make since, however it reality what makes him so attractive is going to raise his price on the market and whatever that price ends up being it will outweigh how much his worth is over Niemann. At least IMO. If we can get him for Elliot Johnson than hell yea do it, but thats not going to happen.

1. Injury history.
2. 5.13 ERA.
3. Free agent to be.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 21, 2009 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
those just help my arguement for why we shouldn't give up much for him
maybe I am overestimating his value but if his numbers are near Shields’ like SK said than I imagine teams like the Mets, Phillies, Yankees will be willing to give up more than just a EJ type player.
by Dbullsfan on Jul 21, 2009 5:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 21, 2009 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just don't understand why we would even be looking at SP options
we don’t need new pitchers. We need guys like Kaz, Price, Garza, and in a smaller since because he has done well Shields too pitch to what we expected. Are we going to trade for anyone that has a better chance of outperforming Davis the 2nd half. If we aren’t happy with Niemann than call up Wade ( OT: I did read somewhere that he may start Thursday if Kaz can’t go because of forearm tightness)
by Dbullsfan on Jul 21, 2009 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm writing about Pavano for FG.
I brought him up because Raymondo has mentioned him.
It snowballed, but we’re not serious about going after him.

is there a reason C.C. and Pena aren't starting
I understand giving them days off against lefties but why at the same time, especially with Niemann pitching, he may need all the offense we can get not too mention throwing a line-up without 2 of your all-stars will just put more pressure on him to perform.
