Then again, Cliff Lee's record is 6-9. Ew, he's definitely not a good pitcher. Nope. Not at all. He's going to lose almost 20 games for cripes sake! The Indians would be lucky to get a C-level prospect for him.*
Before I'm swamped with Indians fans telling me how stupid I am, this is sarcasm. You can't use FIP/xFIP/tRA/tRA* then turn around and base predictive value on W-L records. It's like dating an Orangutan then deciding you like people better. Once you cross that line, you aren't coming back.

He'll give up way less with an actual infield.

Niemann, Brignac, Barnese/Moore/one of our 200 SP spects
1. James Shields 2. Scott Kazmir 3. Matt Garza 4. David Price 5. Jeff Niemann
I suspect Moore is pretty close to untouchable internally
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
With a prospect like that, there's just no way to value him properly.
He’s too high risk to give up anything that great for, but he’s too good to give him up for less than a boatload.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Exactly.
He’s a guy that you could end up looking back on and saying “How the hell did we throw that stud in?”
Matt Moore is too good to give up for Cliff Lee
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Chris Mason sat around 90 - 92 at his best
And was right-handed, and never struck out 13/9.
The better comp, I guess, is that he could be Matt Walker, but frankly it seems like Walker just got a bad case of Steve Blass disease.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

If we go for Doc or Lee we need to include Niemann
Simple as that. Niemann has tremendous value with the season he has been having. Putting him in the pen would be bad on all fronts
Offer the Indians
Niemann + Sonny + low level spect for Shoppach and Lee
Offer the Jays
Niemann + Sonny (or maybe Talbot) + Brignac for Doc
Sonny and Talbot are both hurt and probably won't be back by the deadline.

Davis and Niemann.
They get two cost controlled rotation pieces for a guy they likely won’t be able to hold onto after next year. That’s not a bad deal for them.
I wouldn't qualify either of those as even decent starting offers
Need to give up value to get value. Throwing out spare parts isn’t going to do it, unless they’re really good spare parts.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Then Davis + Niemann
Niemann has a potential to be the ALROY. He has been improving greatly. We move him now or he stays in the rotation.
We would be a massive loser in any deal not include Niemann
It is critical to factor in the opportunity cost of moving Niemann to the pen
That is the cost most people are ignoring
I just assume the move would be Price ---> Durham
Or Price back to the pen for a half season.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

I think Davis + Niemann swings a bit too far in the other direction

He was our wooping boy.
Maybe Clemson might actually live up to what their fans think they are. Arguably the most delusional fans in the nation (other than maybe NC State).
No. I don’t think fans can be delusional when everyone else also thinks they’ll be good. But no they will never live up to expectations.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
It’s not their fault the media tells they are every year.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
I know you aren’t. I also have no expectations because that way they can’t disappoint. I do have expectations for basketball though which is probably more dangerous.
Also I obviously have a thing for teams that don’t live up to expectations.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
The basketball team could be very good.
Losing The Ugly One hurts, but the fact that you return your best player is nice. I believe y’all had a pretty good recruiting class this year too.
For as much as I hate Clemson football, I never really minded the basketball team (maybe because Clemson fans are only obnoxious during football season). Although, Pat Conroy maintains that playing in Littlejohn was the worst place he ever played while at the Citadel. A friend’s dad who played football there hated the trips to Clemson. Too many locals that were just rednecks.
They think such things because they have the talent to win the ACC.
They don’t have the coaching.

Maybe.
They have never done it, though. Clemson’s talent seems to always sputter. I can’t think of a whole lot of NFL talent from Clemson. I can for pretty much every other decent ACC program.

I almost applied to Wake. I didn’t like their education program though.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
What education program?
Literally. It’s a minor. You don’t go to Wake for specificity, though, unless you want to work in business.
It was a major when I looked. You apply to it your junior year. That’s the part I didn’t like.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
Hmmm
Weird. Maybe I am misremembering. I do have two friends that are teachers, but one majored in history and the other sociology. Only one actually took any education classes.
Are they high school teachers because that’s different. I was looking at elementary education.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
One teaches HS and the other teaches preschool special ed.
His mom does the same, though, and he used to be an assistant during summers.
No reason to drop 40k a year, though to be a teacher unless you just love the place.
There’s no way I would have paid full price. I don’t mean that in a conceited way just that if I didn’t get a scholarship I wouldn’t have gone. It doesn’t matter now since I changed my major anyway.
Who needs affection when you can have blind hatred?
lol
Most people don’t. They’re really good about giving money. I had a lot when I went there. Lost a lot after my first year. Clemson sporting events are more fun, but teh town is WAY worse.
I love downtown! I don’t go far out of the downtown campus area unless I’m going to Greenville for the mall or something.

I don't know , I haven't seen him pitch in person this season.
It is tough to judge from watching today, the weather is awful (rain). 6 K’s through four considering is pretty good though.
Indians fan here
First off, yes, we do understand sarcasm.
I think any type of deal you propose would have to start with Davis most likely.
Shapiro has clearly stated that he wants a pitcher in return that can slot into the #2 or #3 spot in a rotation (I have no idea what he’s doing with the #1 spot — perhaps forgoing it altogether.)
Davis fits that bill … Niemann and Sonny probably don’t.
Those guys might make for interesting secondary pieces (1 not both) … along with some low minors types.
Lee would be the perfect addition for the Rays … he slots in nicely at the front of your rotation, and he’s only $9 million next season.
I have to disclaim these things.
The Price-Pujols rumor post taught me that not everyone understand sarcasm.

I’m not real sure how much interest the Indians have in Bartlett.
They’ve finally taken the leap to move Cabrera to shortstop, and he looks to be a good one there.
Plus, Bartlett probably isn’t as cost-controlled as they would like.
Arms are the key to the Tribe right now … that’s why I think any deal would have to start with Davis … and include at least another close to ML-ready piece … or a lower, more projectable arm.
Any position player would probably be a minor leaguer.

Hillbilly is a term referring to people who dwell in rural, mountainous areas of the United States, primarily Appalachia and the Ozarks.
Due to its strongly stereotypical connotations, the term is frequently considered derogatory, and so is usually offensive to those Americans of Ozarkan and Appalachian heritage. However, the term is also used in celebration of their culture by mountain people themselves. Such co-opting and neutralizing use is almost exclusively reserved for Appalachian people themselves. Such people consider the term Hillbilly to be a descriptive term lumping all such inhabitants together in a single ethnic group similar to the term Cajun as a description of an uniquely American ethnic group.

It depends on the next 3 games?
Maybe I’m in the minority, but has anyone mentioned the effect of the current and next series. I’d imagine any potential moves will be largely somewhat influenced by how BOS, NYY, and the Rays perform over the next 3-4 days and where we are in relation to WC/AL East. I don’t envision having this discussion if we drop 4 while the other 2 teams roll.
Daily Blog: www.lostinsoxcountry.com
How does that change anything?
Dropping 2 more GB makes it more likely to get a Lee/Doc type player for when we have to take on the Yanks/Sox later in the year
I can't help that I make some things look easier than they really are.
by Sandy Kazmir on Jul 22, 2009 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions
it means we're farther back?
It means we’re 5 GB instead of 3 with fewer games to play. Which means more ground to cover and a lower expected playoff appearance. I imagine adding Pitcher X while either 1, 3, or 5 GB would be relatively huge in terms of shifting playoffs odds.
Daily Blog: www.lostinsoxcountry.com
It's not like we don't control our own destiny still
We have to keep it tight and then win those series at the end.
I can't help that I make some things look easier than they really are.
by Sandy Kazmir on Jul 22, 2009 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions
I've actually always had a problem with this philosophy
because while it’s great we control our own destiny, so does every other team. 5GB, while still reasonably within striking distance, sounds (and is) a lot farther than 3GB. I realize a good run here or there and we’re right back in it, but I don’t necessarily you make decisions based on something that’s relatively out of your contorl.
Look, these are finance guys, it’s all about moving within your industry (AL East) and how you perform relative to your peers. You’re not going to undertake a huge CapEx spend by giving up prospects when the tide is rolling away from you, especially given your strong position and future performance. There’s no incentive to necessarily undertake a huge trade, and the FO has proven they’re more interested in LT success with timed risks.
Trading for the sack of trading probably doesn’t fly well, unless they calculate the gamble’s worth it
Daily Blog: www.lostinsoxcountry.com
Though it took me longer to articulate what you meant than I had planned, I do generally agree
We have to go 3-2 against the White Sox and the Jays for this to be a 7-3 road trip, our last 10 has been stuck on 7-3 for a while now, if that’s not good enough then adding a guy isn’t going to help much, either way.
I can't help that I make some things look easier than they really are.
