With Matt Holliday gone to the Cardinals to add much-needed protection for Albert Pujols, one of the major dominoes has fallen. Now, what’s next? The Rays, Twins, Phillies, Dodgers, Angels, Red Sox, and Yankees could all be major players this week. Among the sellers could be the Indians, who keep fielding offers for Victor Martinez from Boston, Tampa Bay, and San Francisco, but they aren’t inclined to deal unless a team’s best prospects are included.
Besides Roy Halladay, other prize pitchers who could be pried away include Scott Kazmir (the Rays finally realize he’s never going to be a No. 1), Cliff Lee (it will take a blockbuster package), Jarrod Washburn (if the Mariners decide they’re not going to contend), Erik Bedard (proceed with caution), and George Sherrill (a great find for anyone seeking a lefthanded reliever), while hitters Aubrey Huff and Kevin Millar could be had.
It's funny because Kazmir WAS a number one just two years ago.

Sounds like Shapiro is looking for the impossible
when it comes to Lee and Martinez
Here’s hoping he gets a Johan Santana return, if that’s the case
Yeah I agree, Shapiro is shooting the shit
He’s practically asking for impossible things so that he doesnt have to give up either.
It’s a lost cause, we should stop obsessing over Lee/Martinez and look elsewhere because this would never get done.

He wants more?
Nick Cafardo reports that the Indians turned down an offer of Clay Buchholz for Victor Martinez according to an NL scout. The Red Sox then countered with a package of Michael Bowden, Justin Masterson, and an outfield prospect, but the Indians turned that down as well.
from what I heard
they refuse to offer Buccholz, I doubt that offer ever happened.
1. James Shields 2. Scott Kazmir 3. Matt Garza 4. David Price 5. Jeff Niemann
Yesterdays game sure made it seem like we dont need bats or pen help
Although, can never have too much of either
However, we need a SP pretty bad. I would let V-Mart go and go all out for Lee

I wouldn't mind another LHP
with JP more or less strictly a closer and/or late inning, it’d be ok to add Shouse, while keeping Choate
Although i see a problem, because neither can go more than a batter or two
He sexy
but he would prob bitch and moan if we didnt name him the closer

I dont understand why everyone is giving up on Kaz
He led the league in K’s 2 years ago. He is only 25. He isnt even in the prime of his career yet. He is locked up for the next 4 (5?) years at a reasonable price. If we let him go, we better get someone great in return. The year after he leaves he will probably win a cy young.
Also, he wants to be a Ray.
He should be the face of our franchise once CC leaves.
its just BOTH our lefties
are inefficient and inconsistent. Would be nice to have one to count on.

Cliff Lee is lefty, efficient and consistent.

are you expecting his arm to fall off?
He’d make like 50 starts though next year.

You’re already predicting we’re out of next years race as well.

which is exactly my point

you have some support for that?
it seems like most great pitchers are at their best late 20s and 30s.
Why would I say it if I didn't have evidence?

I am not sure those conclusions are right
Neither is the author. Anyone pitching in the majors at 21 is going to be a really good pitcher, or at least have tons of talent. There are a lot more 28 year olds pitching, so it is not surprising that the K rate declines as you get older, same with the other stats. Put together a list of pitchers who pitched from age 23 (or younger) through their mid 30s and leave the rest of them out, then I will believe you.
He doesnt even resemble the pitcher from 2 years ago...
His velocity is way down. His slider is not even close to the devastating strikeout pitch it used to be. Can he become a great pitcher again? Maybe, but the Rays can afford a pitcher at $10 million per season that likely wont recapture that past form. They need salary cap relief, and if Kaz can help them net Cliff Lee, then I’m all for it.
Good lord, man. Now you're just setting out bait.

My apologies...I meant budget as opposed to "cap"....
I’m glad you can nit pick on that instead of backing up your point.
he was great last may.
his velocity has been back up his last few starts. cliff lee is great, and if we traded kaz for him i would understand. but i cant understand trading him for napoli or some prospects not named bumgarner.
His slider hasnt been even close to what it used to be...
And his velocity is still down. He’s up from 87-89mph, but that’s not saying much. A pitcher with little command, that throws 91-92 most of the time, with no strike out pitch usually wont be successful.
Lee has just come around.
he could be a fluke.
I wouldn’t mind waiting and see how Kazmir finishes the season.

NONONONONONONONONONONONO
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
From Ken Rosenthal(foxsports)
The Dodgers and Indians are in serious discussions about a blockbuster that would send left-hander Cliff Lee and catcher Victor Martinez to Los Angeles for first baseman James Loney, one of the Dodgers’ young starting pitchers and prospects, according to major-league sources.
The deal still faces significant obstacles due to the number and nature of players involved, one of the sources said. But the Dodgers clearly are not content with their club, even though they have built a wide lead in the NL West and the best record in the National League.
More to come …
