Tampa Bay Rays Scout Angels Top Prospect Trevor Reckling; Reportedly Still Working on Cliff Lee/Victor Martinez Trade
A pair of updates to start the morning courtesy of Ed Price's Twitter account:
#Indians and #Rays scouted top #Angels prospect LHP Trevor Reckling tonight (7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 9 K in AA).
This would seemingly pertain to a potential Scott Kazmir deal. Interesting is how the Indians and Rays were in attendance for the start. I'm not sure it means a whole lot, but nevertheless, that's a nice little line posted by Reckling.

I'm not so sure I wouldn't rather just keep Reckling instead of moving him on for Lee
he is pretty good, although I imagine it will take more than just Kazmir to get him.
It's been a weird day
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
interesting note from mlbtr
The Angels might not have the top-flight pitching prospects the Indians desire in return for Lee
so those who were following the M's blog
are they pretty clueless over there about Clement right now or whats the vibe?
Could this have anything to do with Jeff Clement getting pulled tonight?

There was alot of buzz this weekend (as the DRB threads attest) about a Rays-Indians-M’s three-way deal with Brignac, Kazmir, Clement, Morrow, V-Mart, Lee, and a Tampa Bay prospect (if I have this right).
Prospect = Wade Davis.

I have some stories to learn about the Dukes family
Apparently they brought the mother fucking ruckus when the Nats were in town

well he was going to come here and play football for Chuck Amato
while he was still coaching at NC State…..that would have been fun, I’m actually disappointed he chose baseball, he was going to be one hell of a linebacker.
My god he would have been scary.
But I don’t know the full story but apparently the Dukes family was causing some trouble when Nats were in town. Oh and A-Rods new lover was at the game last night and apparently had dirty hair

UPDATE P0ST-GAME: Jeff Clement’s removal in the third inning was creating some buzz in the clubhouse as word filtered out, but no one seemed to know the significance.
Here’s what manager Don Wakamatsu said: “I just found out. I’m sitting here trying to get out of a four-game losing streak. If anything happens, I trust our organization in Jack Zduriencik’s hands. I don’t know any details beyond he was pulled,”
what?
GM or manager denying something makes it more likely, something is happening.

RJ meant in the GDT
that we dont rent, we would extend them
but is there any way we can give Lee AND V-Mart deals? One would be nice at least. Please come to Tampa, guys.

I could see us trying to work something out with Martinez, but not Lee.
Lee would give us his year and 1/2 and than the picks. Unless our pitching depth gets depleted by 2011 we should have some solid options for the rotation.
I don't know if it would apply to these two.
But with Bay and Holliday the intent was to re-sign them.

According to a Tampa Bay source, the Rays are still working on getting catcher/first baseman Victor Martinez and left-handed pitcher Cliff Lee from the Indians, but it could wind up being a very complex deal.
According to another source, whose team is not involved, Tampa Bay and Cleveland may be working with the Los Angeles Angels on a three-way trade that also involves Rays lefty Scott Kazmir. That source said both the Indians and Rays had scouts present Tuesday as left-hander Trevor Reckling, a top Angels prospect, struck out nine and allowed one hit in seven innings for Double-A Arkansas.
It would appear to be difficult for Tampa Bay to add Lee and Martinez, since both players make more than $4 million this year and more than $5 million next year (Lee’s 2010 salary is a team option). Moving Kazmir ($6 million this year, $8 million next year) would help free up the needed money.
Perhaps Kazmir would go to Los Angeles with Lee and Martinez to Tampa Bay, which could use an offensive upgrade at catcher. Or Kazmir could go to Cleveland, Lee to Los Angeles and Martinez to Tampa Bay.
From what Kazmir has been saying...
If we trade him, anyone think he starts going all Dice-K on the Rays?
Most of his starts since returning have been solid anyway
He would be driven against us. Yeah……he would own us, not looking forward to getting owned by EJax

They got some nice pitching spects
I want Lee and V-Mart but if we were selling, these Angels spects would be nice to have.

O'Sullivan is better than Reckling
And always has been. Reckling doesn’t impress me that much, at least facially. Lefty control artists don’t excite me all that much. I guess his downside is as a loogy, but I doubt he has a ton of upside either.

UPDATE 10:45 — I tried to contact Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik but haven’t heard from him. Manager Don Wakamatsu when asked about Clement had no idea that he’d been pulled and was informed of it only moments before his postgame press conference.
“I just found out about it,” Wakamatsu said. “Obviously, we were here trying to win a ballgame.”
Then again when I mentioned to him that he wouldn’t be the first to know of these things, he agreed.
“You trust the people in your organization,” he said. "I really don’t know anything about any of this.
However, I talked with a player, who seemed pretty certain that a deal would be announced tomorrow. And that player, said, “I don’t think we’re selling, I think we’re going out to get somebody.”
If that’s the case, there is a possibility that the Mariners would need to package Clement, along with perhaps a big league player (reliever?) and another minor league player. I’m checking into that, but it could be possibly be a pitching prospect from Double A or A.

GOING OUT TO GET
SCOTTY DANGEROUS?
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
that would make sense
Kazmir and Brignac makes a lot of sense for them. Although I don’t know if they can send us a package and not include Morrow.
Boner activated
Sounds like the guys we would need for Lee
1. James Shields 2. Scott Kazmir 3. Matt Garza 4. David Price 5. Jeff Niemann
i think he can
of course he loses the right to ever call JP Richarddi again
Yeah, I spelt his name wrong.

Clement was indeed dealt, and with at least one other minor leaguer and as many as five players being involved altogether. I am not hearing anything about a 5-for-2, just five players in all.
By: Jason A. Churchill on 07-29-2009 01:27:36
There will not be any details until tomorrow. Go to sleep.
I don’t know a whole lot more than you right now. But a few names are out there that make it interesting.
I will say, it sounds like Jack is doing anything but SELLING.
I 2nd that.
I’m still drooling over the idea of Brignac and Kaz coming to Seattle. And I’d be equally excited to see Lee and Martinez go to the Rays.
I don't blame you
I’m a bit saddened if this happens. I am a huge Brignac fan, being from near Durham I’ve seen him play a ton and I think he is going to be really good. I can’t post yet on LL or I would have gotten in on the discussion on his defense. You guys will love him if you get him. Be patient with his bat against lefties but other than that you will enjoy it.
We're currently playing Ronny Cedeno on a regular basis, we'll be easily impressed.
I hope this trade works out, my 2 favorite teams make out like bandits and the Indians take Morrow and Clement off our hands.
from rotoworld
The Seattle Times’ Geoff Baker has “little doubt” that Jeff Clement will be traded after he was pulled from Triple-A Tacoma’a game on Tuesday.
Baker also thinks that Brandon Morrow could be a part of it. If the Mariners were to move those two in the same deal, it’d suggest that they’re going for broke. Clement alone could be traded for another youngster capable of helping in 2010 and beyond. The Mariners have obviously soured on the 25-year-old Clement, who has yet to hit in the majors and still isn’t much of a catcher.
I'm trying not to get too excited
but this is really starting to shape up like the deal for Kaz and Briggy
I love how Mariner fans are afraid they are going to trade for Jack Wilson and Freddy Sanchez
for some reason those names keep coming up reading stuff from them.
not much but Churchill posted again.

It doesn’t sound like it’s a rental situation, no.
I'm trying to find anything from the Indians side seeing if they are talking but their SB site seems quiet.
that is true
I’m sure nothing official will come out till tomorrow, but damnit I want someone to leak something. lol
I hope this guy is right
By: Jason A. ChurchilI on 07-29-2009 02:16:01
I have heard it is Jeff Clement and Brandon Morrow for Scott Kazmir.
no word yet on if anyone is involved
he mentioned earlier that 5 players were involved, I would have to imagine Brignac and another guy from Seattle make up the other 2. If we somehow got Morrow + Clement for only Kazmir I would be shocked.
ugh
By: Jason A. Churchill on 07-29-2009 02:26:38
Actually guys, I believe the site has been fooled. I did not post the above comment, No. 40.
I have NOT heard that.
All I know is that Clement was traded, and at least one, possibly two or three other minor leaguers are involved and that it could be a three-way deal.
doesn't mean this still doesn't happen
like I said it makes a lot more sense if Brignac is in there as well.
51. By: Stormton on 07-29-2009 02:36:36
Some Phillies fan I know said he heard somewhere that it’s Morrow/Clement to Cleveland, Lee to Tampa, Brignac/Kazmir to Seattle.
Not a new rumor, but it does fit the 5 player criteria. Man oh man, that would be amazing.
52. By: Jason A. Churchill on 07-29-2009 02:39:31
That’s very possible, and a scenario talked about between two scouts at the Everett game Monday. They didn’t see how Cle could send Martinez AND Lee to TB and only get back Morrow, Clement, maybe some cash and a prospect from TB and one from Seattle. Without Martinez, the deal becomes much more feasible.
the cash and a prospect could be talking about Davis
This may be the main deal and if we put a package together for Martinez (Davis, Barnese, or w/e it takes) doesn’t really involve seattle so he prolly wouldn’t know much about it.
Apparently Aaron Pribianic is going to be a part of the Clement deal
- prospect for seattle according to BA 3rd rd pick from 08. Decent numbers, only 1 HR in 87 innings. Doesn’t sound like a very high ceiling but may make it as a back end guy or bullpen arm. Not sure what use he would have given our pitching depth in the minors but maybe Cleveland likes him? That assuming we are apart of this deal.
Not a huge Reckling fan myself
