Small questions for the locals

Hello Rays fans,

A wandering Braves fan here, continuing on the consummate baseball quest to visit every Major League park.  If the flights look good, I find myself eyeballing the remote possibility of visiting Tropicana Field, on Thursday July 9th, as the Toronto Blue Jays visit your hometown Rays, for an afternoon game.

If all goes according to plan, I really do not have a whole lot of time to wander about Tampa and St. Petersburg aside from just the ball game, but I would just like ask just a couple of quick questions, that I'm hoping the locals can help me out with.

Taxis - from Tampa's airport to the Trop is showing about 26.1 miles.  Would you folks suggest that I cab it, or just plunk down the cash to get a rental - basically initial estimates are showing that I'd be paying $50 for the 12-hour window I'd be looking at, for an economy car.  I guess what would help is if anyone could spare some knowledge of if there are any storage lockers in Tampa's airport or not; if not, without question, the rental car will become necessity, as it would become my storage locker on wheels for the day.

Tickets - given the fact that it's a day game, would you folks suggest I just eat it at the box office, or does the Trop have a scalper scene that would afford me a good shot at getting a good seat for a nice price?

Park - I can read the fluff on tampabayrays.com, but I want to hear from you the locals, if there is truly anything at the Trop that I should make a must-see in my visit?  Btw, I recall back when the devil was still around that Trop parking was free; I imagine with the nice run and influx of popularity that's proabably changed?

Food - I'm a bit of a foodie enthusiast when traveling, and I'm all about trying new and unique (read: big and strange) things that are mostly exclusive to your area.  So here's the question - I've got one meal available; where in St. Petes/Tampa do you recommend?  If it's any help to the kind of weirdo I am, I'm a fan of Man v. Food on the Travel Channel, and I like to try weird things out.

And that's really about it.  Like I said, I don't have much more than an afternoon to spend in your fair city unfortunately, otherwise I'd be asking a lot more questions.  Any help that any of you guys can provide will be greatly appreciated, and all feedback is welcome.  So thank you in advance, and I look forward to the ideas and suggestions you guys have in store for me.

PS - if DRaysBay is interested, I can put together an unbiased, outsider's write-up about my experience at the Trop after the trip, if it occurs.  In fact, I'm actually hitting up your AAA affiliates in Durham a day prior, so I could be sure to throw that in, as well.

Previous parks, with the help of local folks all around MLB cities:  Great American Ball Park, Dodger Stadium, Angel Stadium, PETCO Park

Check out the Rays touch-tank

It’s interesting enough to be more than just a bizarre novelty.

The Lucky Dill is a Deli on Central Ave. not too far from the Trop if you are in the mood for a really good sandwich. If you had a rental I would say go to the The Salt Rock Grill on Indian Rocks Beach. Excellent seafood.

The one thing I really enjoy doing before the game starts is hanging out by the home bullpen and listening to Bobby Ramos or Hickey or the starter of the day chat before the game. I sat there until game-time for ALDS game 1 before going to my much cheaper seat and it was the coolest experience I’ve ever had in a ballpark.

Maybe I’m just an old fashioned BJ suck-off-er. (Good call Sandy)

My best guesses:

Taxi – I know very little about cab fares from the airport, but the rental sounds pretty cheap. I would think that would be tough to beat.

Tickets – Given that it’s a day game, I suspect you would have ample opportunity to check out the scalper scene on your way up to the ticket window (which is on the East side of the ballpark, by the rotunda). The Rays are about the cheapest ticket in MLB and, unfortunately, there are usually plenty of tickets for walk-ups.

Park – The touch tank is a good rec, but there is usually a line so leave yourself some time. I think they still have the Cuesta Ray Cigar Bar at the Trop. Parking is only free if you have 4 or more in your car. There is a parking garage between Central Ave. and 1st Avenue SOUTH (the south part is important) on 2nd Street in downtown St. Pete. The entrance is on 1st street south, and a shuttle bus picks up on 2nd street right outside the parking garage. Parking there is only 5$.

Food – The Salt Rock Grill is excellent food to be sure, but getting from Indian Rocks Beach to the ballpark may stretch your already tight schedule. If you want to stay downtown, there are some pretty good eats closer to the park: Savannah’s Cafe (1113 Central Ave.), Z-Grille (104 2nd street S), Zurritos (on Central and ~4th street) and Primos (27 4th street N). I’ll see if I can think of some more.

You should also make a pass through Fergs for a beer on your way in. It will be dead for a day game, but for week-end games in particular it’s the place to be for pre- and post-game refreshment. During the playoffs, the party spilled out for blocks.

My father was six foot four when he left for Japan. When he came back he was five foot even. The Japanese blew off his shins and the doctor told him he would never walk again. He never gave up. He walked right to that doctor, looked up, and punched him... in the kidneys.

Parking in the Garage is all I'll do from now on.

It’s so nice. $5 and a free ride to the Trop. You can’t beat that.

I'll give it a shot...

Taxis- I’d suggest the rental. Especially if you are planning to get a meal away from the Trop.

Park – The Rays touch tank is definitely unique and something I’d recommend at least stopping by to see.

Food – Ferg’s across from the stadium is the place where people go before and after games. A few local food recommendations:

Wild Shrimp Co. -Just a small food stand located in a parking lot about a mile from the Trop on Central Ave. Not bad if you don’t want to travel to far and I’ve always enjoyed the food.

Dockside Dave’s – This would be my recommendation if you want to venture out by the beach. Basically a beach restaurant that specializes in grouper. I’d suggest the grouper fritters and either grouper sandwich or grouper bites.

Candy Kitchen – Local ice cream shop that’s very unique. Excellent homemade ice cream in a very creative candy shop.

Hope this helps

Taxi- the other two are right it would be more to taxi back and forth than that.

Tickets- go to stubhub.com; i am fortunate that my parents have season tickets so I get to use them some of the time but if there is a game I want to go to and they are as well I go there. Especially for a Thursday day game you will get a deal. A couple of weeks ago I got two tickets half way up behind home plate for half of face value.

Park- Wish I could say more but the touch tank is the only out of the ordinary thing other than going to the resturant in centerfield to see the view, though not to exciting.

Food- Not really sure what you would like best but downtown st. pete has a lot of option. Just go to Central between 2nd and 3rd street and there about 10 different resturants in two blocks.

Here...

Food wise, if you are looking for something a little nicer, I would reccommend “The Columbia” at the pier which isnt all that far from the park. Its a nice place, with a great view overlooking the gulf. The food is very authentic, and great. www.columbiarestaurant.com/st_petersburg.asp

I used stubhub for the first time when I went to my last game, and I will never use anything else again.

Seconded

It’s about as Tampa as you get.

The Gulf?

The Pier is on Tampa Bay.

And as for the Columbia being as Tampa as you get, yeah the one in Ybor is. The one in St. Pete is nice, but it’s just not the same as the original. And besides, who’d want to be as “Tampa” as it gets? We’re talking Saint Petersburg, Florida, not Tampa.

There is a Ted Williams museum

inside the Trop. I haven’t visited it in a while, but seems like a worthwhile place for a baseball fan to visit.

These guys hooked you up with the goods, but I would be interested in reading your review.

The Trop has come a long way from being a vacant warehouse 6-7 years ago. There is now all kinds of stuff in there and you can usually find some cheap beers if you look hard enough. I would recommend picking up 3 hookers so that you can park onsite for free. If you don’t pay them it works out nicely. For this, just cruise the streets of St. Pete.

4th street, from the corner of 5th avenue down to the Monticello.

Hooker central. Of course, you would know. That’s how you picked up your lovely lady last night.

El Crap SUCKS

Any place which charges for refills on soda or iced tea is a joke. El Crap is such a place. Haven’t been since 2003 and won’t return.

No longer a local, but I'll take a crack...

Taxis – Just rent the car. It will be cheaper, and it will be impossible to get a cab back from St. Pete without waiting for a long time.

Tickets – They’re not that expensive, and you’re probably better off going to the box office

Stadium – I would say just walk around inside. There are lots of goodies. Obviously the Rays tank is the real distinguishing mark, and the cigar bar is nice. Ted Williams Museum is good to walk through as well.

Food – If you’re a foodie and want a taste of Tampa cuisine, you must must must go to Columbia Restaurant. There’s a location in The Pier, which is about a 20 minute walk from the Trop, but to get the full experience I’d recommend going to the one in Ybor City in Tampa. Tampa-style Cuban-Spanish food is the only truly local Tampa food, different from anywhere else in the world. Tampa was initially populated by Cubans and Italians back in the 1890s, and the food ended up with some kind of amalgalm of Spanish, Cuban and Italian all blended together. Carmine’s (Cubo-Italian) and anything Alessi (Cubo-Italian desserts) are good bets as well.

Just a warning though

Columbia is a bit nicer though, so if you want to go there, you should probably be in khakis and a polo or something.

As far as tickets go

I agree with Onecagedtiger, use Stubhub. For an afternoon game against the Jays, you are sure to find a great deal. Just glancing though now, I found lower level seats for like $20 per (below row pp…otherwise you’re in the loge box).

Everything else has been covered…I look forward to the write-up.

Thanks

I really appreciate all the feedback you guys have given me thus far. It makes looking forward to a trip to somewhere I haven’t been in decades that much easier.

No wonder nobody likes you, Tuttle... everything's a (Pujols) damn debate.

oh

and if you are going to have some beer make sure you buy one from the guys walking around. If you get one at the concession it is $8 for 16oz but if you get one from them it is $10 including a $1tip and you get 24oz.

by JRays on Jul 3, 2009 6:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

this is a crucial, crucial tip.

Unless you’re a “beer snob” like me and go for the Boddingtons as soon as you enter the trop, wait on the guy bringing 24oz’ers around.

by Suttree on Jul 4, 2009 1:26 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

OR if you wana be really cheap, We stop at the Liquor store that is on 3rd ave and 7th st i believe (SAME AS TROP MAIN WALKWAY)

But the mini flask type bottles of rum for $5.00. Place on hip and walk into stadium. (Security only asks you to remove your cap) Once inside order a pepso. Go to the bathroom and take a couple shots, Chases them with your pepsi. Pour the rest into your 3/4 full cup….

PROFIT!

Oh and the scalpers can be had, But are not very reliable. A lot of them are dumbasses who think their tickets are worth more than they are. The best trick is to wait until 5 mins before the first pitch then look for a scalper.

My moms friend had a suite one game and snuck Vodka in water bottles.

She brought like a big case so they didn’t check them much.

We got ...

more than 4 tall boys of Lite beer in at a recent game. They don’t do a great job of checking, you’re right.

Try eating some lion for dinner

I would agree with most of the choices here for food, especially about the Columbia, since that is one of Tampa’s most famous restaurants. But if you really want to try something different and crazy, you might want to check out Spoto’s Steak Joint in Dunedin. It’s about 35-45 minutes north of the Trop and their menu can be crazy. They’ve had rattlesnake, kangaroo, elk and lion on it at different times and always have some sort of game meat that you can’t find at too many other places. I’ve never personally been, so I can’t vouch for the place one way or another, but I have heard that their food is pretty good.

Good luck with your trip. I would be interested in reading your review and hear an independent point of view about the Trop. I know how I personally feel about that stadium, but I could be biased after spending so many lonely nights there having whole sections to myself in years past.
