Off-day open Minor League thread(Hellickson pitching)

(I'm making this thread now because who knows when I'll wake up tomorrow)

Just because the Rays are off doesn't mean you can't root for an inadequate offense, since basically every affiliate has problems hitting. Anyway, it's an off day and there are enough prospects pitching(and I just bought an milb.tv subscription!) so that's worth making a thread. Your game times(EDT of course) and starters:

Durham: Doubleheader starting at 1:05, Jeremy Hellickson and Carlos Hernandez

Montgomery: 8:05 Rayner Oliveros

Charlotte: 7:05 Darin Downs(I think. Could be Brian Flores but I think he's just a spot starter).

Bowling Green: off :(

Hudson Valley: 7:05! Jason McEachern! On milb.tv!

Princeton: 7:05 Julius Dettrich

GCL Rays: 12:00 who knows? It might he Talbot's day to throw a few innings on rehab.

I'll be posting here periodically, mostly during the Hellickson/McEachern starts.

Kevin, did you ever get word on what Talbot's injury was?

It sure is good to “see” him back

But it looked like a fastball on the inner half to me

Are u watching on milb.tv?

On Gameday its tough to differentiate between the fastball, slider, or change

Yeah, but it's a small screen with not-great quality

The pitch definitely broke downward, the radio guy called it a change-up and I think he’s right.

SWISS STEAK?

What did he have last start, 15 swinging strikes?

by Buc Wild on Jul 30, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

The fastball is kind of straight

But he’s getting some swinging strikes on it. The curveball and changeup have looked really nice, but he’s not using them THAT often(Ben Badler’s writeup of start #1 including a quote from Hellickson saying he used the offspeed stuff too much, so I’m thinking he’s made an effort to use the fastball more.

Discussion question

Should the Rays limit Matt Moore’s innings? He threw 54 last year and is already at 91.2 in 2009. I don’t think shutting him down after 2 more starts would be the worst thing.

www.raysprospects.com

by Imperialism32 on Jul 30, 2009 2:24 PM EDT reply actions

Shutting down for season, or a stricter inning limitation

I don’t think there is much more for him to prove in the SAL so its not a bad thing

he threw last year*

by P Brady on Jul 30, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

But remember, these guys are throwing pretty competitively in extended spring training.

So he almost certainly threw closer to that 90 inning mark than he did the 50 inning mark total. We just don’t see those listed.

Top 5 draft picks were all hitters

Washington’s a contact/speed guy, Diekroeger has a high ceiling(not huge power, but still), Glaesmann is a 5-tool potential guy, Bailey is a good hitter, and Malm led the state of Nevada in home runs(remember, Bryce Harper plays in Nevada)

Diekroeger said he wasn't before the draft

But it’s probably 50/50. Malm was considered a tough sign, but he’s expressed some interest in signing.

If we sign 4(Let's say LeVon/Diek/Glaessman/Malm), would you take that?

by P Brady on Jul 30, 2009 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably. I want Bailey though. In order of how much I want them to sign

Bailey
Malm(can really hit)
Glaesmann
Washington
Diekroeger

We’d get comp picks for not signing Glaesmann, Wash, Diek of course, that plays into it.

I think we will get some offensive prospects this off-season

Bartlett, Pena, and Crawford all could be moved and they will bring in a decent haul.

+15 defense in back to back seasons, good OBP skills, works the count real nice.

I think the Gabe argument has been put to death, but he’s a very average player, but a great platoon partner and certainly worth while as a 4th outfielder.

I would imagine Joyce starts next year.
