Around SBN: The Gift Of The 2003 Tigers

Hellickson came mostly advertised, but with a better changeup than scouts had described last year. Hellickson delivered 90-92 mph fastballs, touching 93 once for a swinging strikeout. He spotted the pitch well, working both corners of the plate while rarely leaving a pitch down the middle plate or missing up in the zone. His repeatable delivery had minimal effort with a stride directly toward home plate.

Baseball America (sub) on Hellickson, the narwhal of Rays pitching prospects.

Narwhals are very sacred creatures to the Eskimos

And their tusks are believed to have magical properties in some arcane cult circles. It’s technically illegal to harvest their tusks.

I can kind of see where RJ’s going with the analogy.

The only thing better than seeing the Red Sox lose

Is seeing them lose to a crappy team….3 days in a row.

by acablue on Jul 30, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

4 gamer and they won the first night

this is still awesome though. I love how all the analysts on ESPN talk about how good the Sox pitching depth is, but 4 of their 6 pitchers really arent that good.

by BJ the Bossman on Jul 30, 2009 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno about that.

Beckett and Lester are clearly very good, and better than anything we have.

Smoltz is getting hit unlucky. His FIP is 3.61.
Wakefield’s hittable, but he’s an above average pitcher. 4.01 FIP.
Brad Penny’s been solid. 4.31 FIP – that’s about the same as Garza.
Dice K sucks.
Buchholz should be good if they ever give him a run of game.

by Suttree on Jul 30, 2009 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions

For comparison.

Shields: 3.99 FIP
Kazmir: 5.08 FIP
Garza: 4.01 FIP
Niemann: 4.20 FIP
Price: 5.64 FIP

Sonny: 5.10 FIP

by Suttree on Jul 30, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Our pitching's been bad this year.

But, I could see Shields improving slightly, Kazmir making a big leap – he’s been good since being Peterson’d – and Price improving. Hopefully Niemann settles in as a 4.3 guy.

Still, the Sox own the edge by having a true ace, supposing his back doesn’t give out on him again.

by Suttree on Jul 30, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

No I was just saying their pitching is a bit overrated

With how weve pitched this year, I definitely give them the edge. But aside from Lester and Beckett do any of them really scare you? If we have a rubber game of a big series and they dont have Beckett or Lester on the mound I think we have the edge, regardless of who is going for us. Assuming Kaz continues to pitch somewhere close to what he did the other night and Price turns it around

by BJ the Bossman on Jul 30, 2009 4:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't see how it's overrated.

They can trot out six above average MLB starters. That’s good depth.

by Suttree on Jul 30, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Their depth is great but I think we have a great chance to win when facing 4 of their 6 pitchers.

To me that doesnt say “best rotation in baseball”. Which is what ESPN says all the time and the only reason I said they are overrated.

by BJ the Bossman on Jul 30, 2009 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not what you said above.

“I love how all the analysts on ESPN talk about how good the Sox pitching depth is, but 4 of their 6 pitchers really arent that good.”

Don’t change your argument mid-debate, Raymondo.

by Suttree on Jul 30, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I misspoke

because I didnt mean to insinuate that their depth was poor, but their pitching staff isnt as talented as people make it seem. Really my first argument just didnt make sense because if you have 6 legitimate arms to throw out there, you automatically have good depth.

That Bedard deal has to be the worst I've ever seen

They could have easily traded Putz when his value was highest and slid Sherril into that role. Putz would have gotten them a good young arm that would probably be doing what Bedard isn’t doing right now. Plus they’d still have Jones.

I kind of agreed with the premise. But when he started saying ERA and WHIP were the greatest thing since mini skirts….

by matthan on Jul 30, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes I read it.

ERA and WHIP useless? USELESS!!!!!????

I found this site and at first it seemed like it had some half-intelligent Rays fans, but I guess I was wrong.

by Suttree on Jul 30, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow. You two remind me of Billy Beane. Statistics can only get you so far. Stick to ERA and WHIP. There is no need to get into sabermetric stats. Save those for your fantasy teams. I bet Aaron Harang had good sabermetric stats 2 seasons and prior to that. And now he doesn’t because he’s doing bad. Those stats are used to point out why he is doing bad, and how he will fare in the future. No one predicted he would do terrible last year, and he did. Then people predicted he would turn it around this year, because of good sabermetric stats. Guess what? He didn’t.

I understand he didn't make sense for us,

He’s still going to be a 4.5 win player this season and easily be worth his contract over the life of it.

But the larger point is he’s making fun of the Bradley signing when Burrell has been worse than Bradley on the season.

by Tyler on Jul 30, 2009 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't honestly think even the Cubs thought he could play 155+ games.

Fact is, they don’t live in the same budget world we do and if they could get 130 games out of him, which he could still do, while getting somewhere between an .850 and .900 OPS with an outside chance he exceeds that, it would be very much worth it to the team.
