But wouldn’t we get far more overall value by trading Niemann and Davis and then moving Sonny to the rotation?

Ridiculous of course

but Gonzalez is the face of that franchise and a hell of a hitter. He’s got 25+ bombs in friggin’ Petco for god’s sake, and he plays every day.

Also some of the more 'in the know' people may know this...

Why do organizations tend not to do prospect for prospect type deals?

by matthan on Jul 31, 2009 1:35 PM EDT reply actions

Its a good question

You may try to draft heavily on pitching or balanced, but that doesn’t mean three years in thats how the class looks. It would seem to make sense for a pitching heavy team to deal with a positional heavy team

Trade deadline deals are usually between teams looking to deal vets for prospects and vice versa

One team in the deal is trying to get better for a playoff run while the other looks to re-tool for the future

Hagadone

I like Hagadone. Great velocity for a lefty and solid control pre-TJ. I think he’ll turn out to be a fine pitcher now that he’s back from recovery. I was mostly upset because I didn’t think he would be dealt given he just got back from it, but there he goes, 10 minutes later.

Masterson still needs another pitch if he’s going to succeed as a starter long-term I think, but maybe he’ll get the hang of it in Cleveland in a consistent starting role. Sox are probably going to have to give up more than this to get V-Mart, but I don’t know how much.

We don’t trade someone now because we’re not getting enough value. Not in the offseason because we don’t get enough value. Well if you think the Rays can support seven or eight starting pitchers, we're just going to be pissing on each other's shoes.

They might trade Kaz, they might not. They might promote Davis over Sonny, they might not. Talbot’s still down there, isn’t he supposed to be ready too? They’re not getting anything out of this other then depth that is so deep that I’m sure it’s not all needed.

I said earlier this year that maybe the depth is necessary since the Rays did have a year where they went through 14 starting pitchers. I was wrong. If you have to go through that many starting pitchers, you’re not making the playoffs no matter how deep your starting pitching is.

I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.

by kericr on Jul 31, 2009 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

This has been my point all along

At this point we are better off slightly overpaying and getting something very good in return rather than holding pat. The longer the hold the less leverage we will have. At that point we are going to get very little for our guys.

I’m going to repeat this, but we have EIGHT MLB starters next year.

If we wait until after spring training someone will just send us a fungo bat for a #4 starter.

Am I saying Hagadone is a bad prospect? No. He’s not the sure thing that I’d want for a guy like V-Mart.

The sample is so small...

I’ve also said that this deal isn’t great for the Indians unless they pull down another prospect from Boston. Hagadone/Masterson isn’t a bad deal considering it’s a buyer’s market, but it’s not a good one either.

This is ridiculous

I’m beginning to think Friedman really overvalues our guys or our prospects just suck really hard. There is really no other explanation why we don’t make a move. It is almost like we want a dynasty in AA and AAA and a 3rd place team in MLB. I mean what the hell? Hagadone and Masterson? Friedman call up Shapiro and blow that out of the water. We don’t need to keep all 8 of our starters next year and we can afford to give up some of our top 20 prospects in the system. Jesus Christ.

This is my point

The deals themselves under those circumstances were fine. The problem was that the circumstances we created caused the value for our players to be far lower than they should have been. We backed ourselves into a corner. We make a good trade once we were in the corner, but how about we stay out of the corner this time? Trade with some freakign leverage and get good value in return.

Even with Indians catcher Victor Martinez headed to the Red Sox, there is still a possibility that the Padres will trade first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

The Dodgers are making runs at both Gonzalez and Padres closer Heath Bell, either separately or in a blockbuster, according to major-league sources.

If the Dodgers acquired Gonzalez, they presumably would send first baseman James Loney to the Padres or trade him somewhere else.

The Angels also are talking to the Padres about Bell.

If youve invested this much time and emotion into this team

and are just now starting to complain about financial restraints, I dont know where youve been brotha. This is nothing new. Weve got to build from the farm system up, and Friedman has said this all along. Every year or two we will be able to make one big signing/trade because of the financial restraints, and so far the one we made (Burrell) hasnt worked out. We gotta live with that and right now were paying for it. But if youre as intelligent as you seem, I would think you would already know this.

by BJ the Bossman on Jul 31, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I understand this

Just having an overstocked farm system doesn’t do you any good unless you take advantage of it.

If we cannot acquire a very good MLB player then lets acquire a very good prospect with our prospects. Having 2043024923042390 pitchers in the system does us no good. We can only have 5 starting pitchers in the majors.

by matthan on Jul 31, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes but having those prospects for a couple more months doesnt hurt

Im sure Friedman valued these guys accordingly, and if he didnt like the asking price, he wasnt budging. Who’s to say there isnt a great deal to be made in the offseason with all our pitchers? Its not like all these prospects’ stocks are going to suddenly fall off the face of the earth. I for one am glad that we didnt give up Davis or Hellboy for VMart. Theres always another day and another trade to be made. I know it can be frustrating but we should never feel like were forced to make a trade.

at least rotoworld thinks it is a sweet haul for the tribe.

According to SI.com’s Tom Verducci, speaking on the MLB Network, Red Sox RHP Brian Price is the third prospect involved in the Victor Martinez deal.
And there you have it. The Indians will receive LHP Nick Hagadone plus right-handers Justin Masterson and Brian Pirce in exchange for catcher-first baseman Victor Martinez. It’s a pretty sweet haul for the Tribe. Hagadone has great upside and Masterson is very close to being major league-ready. Price is more of a throw-in, but boasts a decent fastball-slider combination.

by walkoffwalk on Jul 31, 2009 3:25 PM EDT reply actions

Cam'ron

From Cleveland’s perspective, they get two good young arms, one of whom can step right into their rotation. That makes this a win, even if dealing Martinez away hurts their offense quite a bit. From Boston’s perspective, they dealt from depth that they could afford to lose in order to get an all-star caliber player who fits perfectly into their roster.

This is a win-win. Good deal for both clubs.

by Doug09 on Jul 31, 2009 4:10 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Would have been to snag a reliever to shore up the pen

but I guess those are fairly easy to do through the waiver wire. We all get to watch 2 more months of Navi waddling down the line into a double play, hope we can pick a catcher up in the offseason

by Albertrayon on Jul 31, 2009 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

Also, we always hear how the Rays have one of the deepest farm systems

so I know the Rays prospects have to be good, but my knowledge is a little shakey on other teams ‘spects. What’s a comparable deal the Rays would have had to put together to get Martinez or Lee? Just so I have some sort of context to put it in.

by Albertrayon on Jul 31, 2009 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

Welp

3:14pm: Rolen approved the deal, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter). ESPN’s Keith Law says Yonder Alonso is not in the deal. Instead, it’ll be Encarnacion, Josh Roenicke, and Zach Stewart heading to Toronto according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.

I saw this post on another Rays forum.... thoughts? Don't kill the messenger btw!
As I stated in another thread, this trade deadline and the previous off-season explains in a microcosm everything that is wrong with MLB. The elite players continue to gravitate to the same 7 major market franchises, now with Lee on the Phillies and VMart with Boston, and Roy Halladay in Los Angeles (as I predicted yesterday). The small market teams exist to feed them their major stars, in exchange for future prospects. Which would be fine, except that when those prospects become stars, they too move on and the process starts over again.

I know the majority of Rays fans seem steadfast against a salary cap. I happen to agree with Costas that a cap is about 10-15 years overdue in MLB, and that the disparity between the haves and have-nots will only grow. That one team could spend $450 million on 4 free agents in one off-season is a disgusting joke, and it is why the NFL surpassed MLB last decade and is widening the gap. Yes, the NFL actually has competition. Small markets like Pittsburgh can win super bowls. New England can dominate not due to large market money flows, but because they have built a better mouse trap. The NBA will leave MLB in the dust soon too.

Honestly I’ve hit the point where I no longer give a crap. I still love the Rays, but I’ve thrown in the towel. In a few years, we’ll fire sale a lot of our top talent to Boston, NY, LA, Chicago, and Philly. By then the Yankees will probably top the $250 million mark in salary, and will have an all-star player at nearly every position. This league is a ****-ing joke.
