I was thinking we could trade Desmond Jennings and Tim Beckham for Edwin Jackson.
He’s been doing real well this year. Where did that kid come from?
Only if we can get a 3-way trade for Delmon Young as well

I understand Sonny will make a great reliever
But wouldn’t we get far more overall value by trading Niemann and Davis and then moving Sonny to the rotation?

Ridiculous of course
but Gonzalez is the face of that franchise and a hell of a hitter. He’s got 25+ bombs in friggin’ Petco for god’s sake, and he plays every day.
Hello.
He actually has 9 bombs at Petco
but yes he is good

Why do organizations tend not to do prospect for prospect type deals?
Because if a team wanted a prospect, they would have gotten them the first time around

Its a good question
You may try to draft heavily on pitching or balanced, but that doesn’t mean three years in thats how the class looks. It would seem to make sense for a pitching heavy team to deal with a positional heavy team
Follow Me on Twitter @FreeZorilla
Trade deadline deals are usually between teams looking to deal vets for prospects and vice versa
One team in the deal is trying to get better for a playoff run while the other looks to re-tool for the future

Earlier, the San Diego Union-Tribune, reported the Angels and Marlins are leading the way in talks for the services of Padres closer Heath Bell.

Hagadone
I like Hagadone. Great velocity for a lefty and solid control pre-TJ. I think he’ll turn out to be a fine pitcher now that he’s back from recovery. I was mostly upset because I didn’t think he would be dealt given he just got back from it, but there he goes, 10 minutes later.
Masterson still needs another pitch if he’s going to succeed as a starter long-term I think, but maybe he’ll get the hang of it in Cleveland in a consistent starting role. Sox are probably going to have to give up more than this to get V-Mart, but I don’t know how much.

We don’t trade someone now because we’re not getting enough value. Not in the offseason because we don’t get enough value. Fine, I didn't mean to be snarky, but my point still stands as rephrased below.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
Well if you think the Rays can support seven or eight starting pitchers, we're just going to be pissing on each other's shoes.
They might trade Kaz, they might not. They might promote Davis over Sonny, they might not. Talbot’s still down there, isn’t he supposed to be ready too? They’re not getting anything out of this other then depth that is so deep that I’m sure it’s not all needed.
I said earlier this year that maybe the depth is necessary since the Rays did have a year where they went through 14 starting pitchers. I was wrong. If you have to go through that many starting pitchers, you’re not making the playoffs no matter how deep your starting pitching is.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
This has been my point all along
At this point we are better off slightly overpaying and getting something very good in return rather than holding pat. The longer the hold the less leverage we will have. At that point we are going to get very little for our guys.
I’m going to repeat this, but we have EIGHT MLB starters next year.
If we wait until after spring training someone will just send us a fungo bat for a #4 starter.
Back on your 8 starters horse again huh
"I want to live in a world where a solo homerun in the 2nd inning counts as much as a solo homerun in the 8th."

"I want to live in a world where a solo homerun in the 2nd inning counts as much as a solo homerun in the 8th."
Would you rather have 2 prospects or win a World Series.
Red Sox are trying to win and win now. Besides, they can just buy more prospects later. God, I hate the Red Sox so much.

Please define significantly?
"I want to live in a world where a solo homerun in the 2nd inning counts as much as a solo homerun in the 8th."
VMart adds 1.5 wins this season
…over 60 games, an extremely small percentage increase and thus NOT significant
"I want to live in a world where a solo homerun in the 2nd inning counts as much as a solo homerun in the 8th."
VMart = World Series
Where did you come up with that equation?
"I want to live in a world where a solo homerun in the 2nd inning counts as much as a solo homerun in the 8th."
I never said that.
I said trying. And if you don’t think VMart improves their chances you are crazy.
I'll repeat
but not worth elite prospects
"I want to live in a world where a solo homerun in the 2nd inning counts as much as a solo homerun in the 8th."
exactly the point
if he is a huge upgrade for us and we don’t have to give up elite prospects then why is he not a ray

I regret using that adjective as soon as I posted

The deals themselves under those circumstances were fine. The problem was that the circumstances we created caused the value for our players to be far lower than they should have been. Weve got to build from the farm system up, and Friedman has said this all along. Every year or two we will be able to make one big signing/trade because of the financial restraints, and so far the one we made (Burrell) hasnt worked out. We gotta live with that and right now were paying for it. But if youre as intelligent as you seem, I would think you would already know this.

Just having an overstocked farm system doesn’t do you any good unless you take advantage of it.
If we cannot acquire a very good MLB player then lets acquire a very good prospect with our prospects. Having 2043024923042390 pitchers in the system does us no good. We can only have 5 starting pitchers in the majors.
Yes but having those prospects for a couple more months doesnt hurt
Im sure Friedman valued these guys accordingly, and if he didnt like the asking price, he wasnt budging. Who’s to say there isnt a great deal to be made in the offseason with all our pitchers? Its not like all these prospects’ stocks are going to suddenly fall off the face of the earth. I for one am glad that we didnt give up Davis or Hellboy for VMart. MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo reports LHP Nick Hagadone and RHP Justin Masterson are part of the package headed to Cleveland for Victor Martinez.
Those two alone might do it, but there’s word a third prospect could be involved. Hagadone is a hard-throwing lefty with a 2.52 ERA and a 32/14 K/BB ratio in 25 innings at Single-A Greenville. Masterson, 24, has a 3.76 career ERA and a 1.28 career WHIP on the major league level.

at least rotoworld thinks it is a sweet haul for the tribe.
According to SI.com’s Tom Verducci, speaking on the MLB Network, Red Sox RHP Brian Price is the third prospect involved in the Victor Martinez deal.
And there you have it. The Indians will receive LHP Nick Hagadone plus right-handers Justin Masterson and Brian Pirce in exchange for catcher-first baseman Victor Martinez. It’s a pretty sweet haul for the Tribe. Hagadone has great upside and Masterson is very close to being major league-ready. Price is more of a throw-in, but boasts a decent fastball-slider combination.
Cam'ron
From Cleveland’s perspective, they get two good young arms, one of whom can step right into their rotation. That makes this a win, even if dealing Martinez away hurts their offense quite a bit. From Boston’s perspective, they dealt from depth that they could afford to lose in order to get an all-star caliber player who fits perfectly into their roster.
This is a win-win. Good deal for both clubs.

I saw this post on another Rays forum.... thoughts? Don't kill the messenger btw!
As I stated in another thread, this trade deadline and the previous off-season explains in a microcosm everything that is wrong with MLB. The elite players continue to gravitate to the same 7 major market franchises, now with Lee on the Phillies and VMart with Boston, and Roy Halladay in Los Angeles (as I predicted yesterday). The small market teams exist to feed them their major stars, in exchange for future prospects. Which would be fine, except that when those prospects become stars, they too move on and the process starts over again.
I know the majority of Rays fans seem steadfast against a salary cap. I happen to agree with Costas that a cap is about 10-15 years overdue in MLB, and that the disparity between the haves and have-nots will only grow. That one team could spend $450 million on 4 free agents in one off-season is a disgusting joke, and it is why the NFL surpassed MLB last decade and is widening the gap. Yes, the NFL actually has competition. Small markets like Pittsburgh can win super bowls. New England can dominate not due to large market money flows, but because they have built a better mouse trap. The NBA will leave MLB in the dust soon too.
Honestly I’ve hit the point where I no longer give a crap. I still love the Rays, but I’ve thrown in the towel. In a few years, we’ll fire sale a lot of our top talent to Boston, NY, LA, Chicago, and Philly. By then the Yankees will probably top the $250 million mark in salary, and will have an all-star player at nearly every position. This league is a ****-ing joke.
