OT (but not really): BJ Ryan was just released today by the Jays
They owe him $10 million this year. Maybe a thought for a setup man? Since we would sign him for the minimum

We'll let him pitch right after Price...

as of now, milan is wicked thin on defense and going after three cups
so gooch will get plenty of important minutes. honestly, he was pretty bad for newcastle, but he’s made strides and i think serie a is more of a fit to his physical talents, as is the champions league. i do believe he’ll come good. future usmnt captain, imo.

by staplemaniac on Jul 8, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
This is what Dave's explanation was.
The other important point to make here is that you’ll notice that catchers have no values entered in the Fielding portion of their Win Values. Evaluating catcher defense is something we’re simply not very good at right now, and while there are strides being made (including a great article by Tom Tango in the 2009 Hardball Times Annual), there’s a lot of things that we haven’t figured out how to quantify yet. So, we’ve just left catchers alone, ranking them all as league average, and will let you all adjust their final win value however you’d like to reflect their defensive value relative to other catchers.
If you think Joe Mauer’s catching abilities and leadership are worth one win, just add one win to what we display as his win value here. Quantifying catching defense is something that we just haven’t figured out yet, and so we’re not pretending that we have. Consider it an opportunity to fill in the blanks.

The spread between best/worst defender at most positions is about a win. If you think Zaun is God, give him 5 runs, and if Navarro is a dog, give him -5, or whatever.

I gotta ask...
If it is Longoria’s hamstring that’s keeping him in his month-long slump (8 RBI in June??? 8?!?!?), why not DL him to get him healthy? Willy Aybar seems more than capable enough to fill in.
Compare him pre-inury to post-injury. He’s not the same guy. It’s clear. Why not give him the time to get back to being healthy?

How do RBI suggest he's in a slump?
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 8, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That was just one sign.
The fact that he’s hitting .200 since the injury is what makes me concerned. And he’s only slugging .360 in that time, which means he isn’t driving the ball.

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 8, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I guess it depends how you want to define it
I’m talking more in relative terms. We seem to fail against the worst pitchers that we face. The guy last night wasn’t exactly Johan Santana.
by matthan on Jul 8, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If Johan is the baseline, then yes, we've faced mostly crappy pitchers.
If the guy is average, we should expect to beat him, but he wouldn’t be average without a few good starts mixed in.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 8, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Johan is great obviously
The point is pitchers like last night, who shouldn’t be anywhere close to average, dominates our team far more than they should.
And even the “average” pitchers that have good starts mixed in seem to have their good starts against us and their bad ones against others.
I don’t see how you don’t notice the same thing. Below average pitchers throw gems against us way too often.

Yeah horizontal is where I am more concerned
Umps shrink the vertical strike zone from what it should be so I don’t see how players can bitch. I guess they have a gripe if it is changing all the time. But in my eyes if it is a regulation strike then you cant really complain. The horizontal crap is ridiculous. Calling stuff inches off the place is horrible. That crap can’t even be hit.

I'm actually okay with Kaz
I think his true talent has really dropped because of the decline in velocity, but I do think he is vastly better now. His control is much better. He is barely missing. When he wants to throw a strike he is throwing it or getting damn close. That is far better than before when he couldn’t hit the ocean from the beach.

He hasn't been hit hard, per say.
50% of his balls in play have been fly balls though, so a few homeruns were to be expected.

I'm really liking what I'm seeing.
I still think he’s going to get better as the season goes on and barring injury, probably near the end of the season, he’s going to go on a big tear.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
by kericr on Jul 8, 2009 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

He did better swinging strikes wise against Toronto than Niemann and Garza did, so that’s a plus. ~8%.

And he's not done, so nevermind.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 8, 2009 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Without using stats, the biggest thing I've seen out of him.
Each start, his slider has looked better.
In his first start back, he still had his crappy slider, which was basically a downward breaking fastball. Last start, he had that slider most of the time too, but he threw a couple that were really good looking, where it appeared to be a sweeping fastball then just dove down and in right at the plate. It was hard to notice, because both of them were to the hackalicious twins on the rangers.
I only caught the 6th, and saw two sliders that inning. They were better then his crap one but didn’t break as hard as those two really good ones last game. His slider is ‘coming back to him’ so to speak. We have to remember that Kaz hasn’t been healthy for a year and a half, he’s going to have some rust on him.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
by kericr on Jul 8, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, the stats back up that his slider is breaking more.
So you’re right about the movement coming back.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 8, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's a bit harder for me to see it on the other pitches
But I imagine that they’re going to become more lively as the season wears on.
Then, when he goes on his tear at the end of the season and is clearly the best pitcher on the staff, we trade him.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.

If the fight actually makes it to the 2nd round, I'd be stunned. I think it's going to look a whole lot like the first.
Lesnar’s going to smash the fuck out of him, and he’s going to have to force a submission to win. He won’t be able to outlast a barrage by Lesnar. He’s strong. Retard strong.

Mir has the more prestigous trainers, It may keep lesnar from falling for the really obvious leglocks, but IF(Medium-Big If) Mir can keep Lesnar in his guard and out of mount, I can’t see it ending well for Lesnar.

This is true, he wasn't able to break through Mir's guard in the first fight.
To his credit, he literally punched right through it more than a few times; however he’s actually not as strong now as he was then. He’s clearly adapted his training to involve more technique and probably flexibility at the cost of pure strength. He’s still stupid strong, but I don’t imagine that he’s strong enough anymore to blast his way through a good guard.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
