OT (but not really): BJ Ryan was just released today by the Jays
They owe him $10 million this year. Maybe a thought for a setup man? Since we would sign him for the minimum

We'll let him pitch right after Price...
And see which lefty can walk the most in their two innings of work.

as of now, milan is wicked thin on defense and going after three cups
so gooch will get plenty of important minutes. honestly, he was pretty bad for newcastle, but he’s made strides and i think serie a is more of a fit to his physical talents, as is the champions league. i do believe he’ll come good. future usmnt captain, imo.

In the middle of the 2007 season
He was throwing mid-90s almost every start, and he had one start in Seattle where everything he was throwing the entire night was 94-97 (he hit 99 MPH one time).

Quite clearly he sucks the nuts. I mean hell they just charged a WP against Kaz where 99% of catchers would have blocked the ball with ease

Is it because Catcher is such a crazy, un-quantifiable position?
Sign lady must die.
by EminenceFront on Jul 8, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions
This is what Dave's explanation was.
The other important point to make here is that you’ll notice that catchers have no values entered in the Fielding portion of their Win Values. Evaluating catcher defense is something we’re simply not very good at right now, and while there are strides being made (including a great article by Tom Tango in the 2009 Hardball Times Annual), there’s a lot of things that we haven’t figured out how to quantify yet. So, we’ve just left catchers alone, ranking them all as league average, and will let you all adjust their final win value however you’d like to reflect their defensive value relative to other catchers.
If you think Joe Mauer’s catching abilities and leadership are worth one win, just add one win to what we display as his win value here. Quantifying catching defense is something that we just haven’t figured out yet, and so we’re not pretending that we have. Consider it an opportunity to fill in the blanks.

The spread between best/worst defender at most positions is about a win. If you think Zaun is God, give him 5 runs, and if Navarro is a dog, give him -5, or whatever.

Framing shouldn't matter if the umps were good
But it does help. The Jays pitcher last night probably got a few extra strike calls due to a competent catcher.
Navi is pathetic defensively. He is a black hole.
I gotta ask...
If it is Longoria’s hamstring that’s keeping him in his month-long slump (8 RBI in June??? 8?!?!?), why not DL him to get him healthy? Willy Aybar seems more than capable enough to fill in.
Compare him pre-inury to post-injury. He’s not the same guy. It’s clear. Why not give him the time to get back to being healthy?
That was just one sign.
The fact that he’s hitting .200 since the injury is what makes me concerned. And he’s only slugging .360 in that time, which means he isn’t driving the ball.
Holy crap how can they charge that on Kazmir
I went back and reviewed it and that was the worst piece of catching. He just turned his glove over, didn’t move his body, and the ball bounced right past his glove.
Got out of that inning
It was lookin dangerous but Kaz said, “I got this”
Kazmir's changeup has become damn good
and lord knows he needs it with the decreased velocity and inconsistent slider.
Hello.

by EminenceFront on Jul 8, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions
I've noticed that pitchers are no longer giving Longoria anything other than curves and changeups really low in the zone
And that might be as much of a reason for the slump as his injury. Perhaps.
and another question, how does gameday distinguish between "soft" and "sharp" hits and flyouts?
is the process scientific!?

I would argue that we don't see that many crappy pitchers.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 8, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I guess it depends how you want to define it
I’m talking more in relative terms. We seem to fail against the worst pitchers that we face. The guy last night wasn’t exactly Johan Santana.
If Johan is the baseline, then yes, we've faced mostly crappy pitchers.
If the guy is average, we should expect to beat him, but he wouldn’t be average without a few good starts mixed in.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 8, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions
Johan is great obviously
The point is pitchers like last night, who shouldn’t be anywhere close to average, dominates our team far more than they should.
And even the “average” pitchers that have good starts mixed in seem to have their good starts against us and their bad ones against others.
I don’t see how you don’t notice the same thing. Below average pitchers throw gems against us way too often.
For Tallet hopefully.

Many hitters crouch when they swing
So the vertical portion of the zone looks a lot smaller than what it really should be
Without adjusting, I usually just focus on obvious misses in the zone, or bad calls on the outside.
The plate isn’t changing sizes.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 8, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah horizontal is where I am more concerned
Umps shrink the vertical strike zone from what it should be so I don’t see how players can bitch. I guess they have a gripe if it is changing all the time. But in my eyes if it is a regulation strike then you cant really complain. The horizontal crap is ridiculous. Calling stuff inches off the place is horrible. That crap can’t even be hit.

I'm actually okay with Kaz
I think his true talent has really dropped because of the decline in velocity, but I do think he is vastly better now. His control is much better. He is barely missing. When he wants to throw a strike he is throwing it or getting damn close. That is far better than before when he couldn’t hit the ocean from the beach.
I mostly agree...
He looks better. He’s still nibbling too much on the edges, it just seems he needs to come in the zone more when bases are empty or fewer on.

Obviously not good, but the tRA will drop

by R.J. Anderson on Jul 8, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions
The solo shots really aren't the issue...
Strikeout pitchers can give those up. It’s the walks and baserunners that are concerning…
It's part luck...
And partly how you pitch someone… He wasn’t really attacking anyone that last inning. Not really going to give up HRs like that.
Kazmir has given up a significantly higher ratio of homeruns when no one is on...
For his career… It’s not really a fluke.
He has actually been sort of lucky
2 baserunners an inning giving up .5 home runs in an inning. That could easily be more than 5 runs
I will do one better

I still think he’s going to get better as the season goes on and barring injury, probably near the end of the season, he’s going to go on a big tear.

Hopefully.
He did better swinging strikes wise against Toronto than Niemann and Garza did, so that’s a plus. ~8%.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 8, 2009 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Without using stats, the biggest thing I've seen out of him.
Each start, his slider has looked better.
In his first start back, he still had his crappy slider, which was basically a downward breaking fastball. Last start, he had that slider most of the time too, but he threw a couple that were really good looking, where it appeared to be a sweeping fastball then just dove down and in right at the plate. It was hard to notice, because both of them were to the hackalicious twins on the rangers.
I only caught the 6th, and saw two sliders that inning. They were better then his crap one but didn’t break as hard as those two really good ones last game. His slider is ‘coming back to him’ so to speak. We have to remember that Kaz hasn’t been healthy for a year and a half, he’s going to have some rust on him.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
Well, the stats back up that his slider is breaking more.
So you’re right about the movement coming back.

This is called making sure your starting pitchers don't get rewarded for their performances on the mound.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
He's being sarcastic because I told him upthread I didn't value his opinion that much.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
I don't understand your reply, I don't think you understand my post.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
I took it as
Making sure your SP don’t get rewarded for their (bad) performances.
Now I see you seriously thought he deserved a win
Kap-rilla???
Not really, but he did leave with the lead, and it's been a trend for this team to reward pitchers for OK or worse performances with victories.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
Balfour brought out a gas can instead of a fire extinguisher.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
That was such a questionable signing when they did it, now they're going to eat all that money.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
You can't let
things like numbers and facts get in the way of a stupid argument, you just can’t.
It's like someone told him after that awful at-bat that if he ever did that again, he'd be on a plane to Durham.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
Well...

Wow, he can kill a rally w/o doing anything wrong

Kinsler's about to get fucked thanks to Brandon Inge.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
still can't believe Kinsler didn't make it
but there were so many good candidates at 2B
Kap-rilla???
He has the best offensive numbers and is a solid defender. He should have been starter, and Pedroia has no business being in the ASG.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
I could understand Figgins instead of Kinsler
but Inge? Seriously?
2009 Rays Baseball: Still Kings of the Sunshine State
There's one more day and Inge took over the lead.
I’m torn between continuing to pump ballots for Los, whose in 4th, or voting for Kinsler to right that wrong.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
Inge is a fantastic defender.
Longo level.
And his bat has been good this year.

Completely OT: I am not a fan of MMA, but I really want to see the Lesnar/Mir fight.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
I am a fan of mma, I've got Mir by sub in the 2nd
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
If the fight actually makes it to the 2nd round, I'd be stunned. I think it's going to look a whole lot like the first.
Lesnar’s going to smash the fuck out of him, and he’s going to have to force a submission to win. He won’t be able to outlast a barrage by Lesnar. He’s strong. Retard strong.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
I don't follow it enough but if everything I've heard about Lesnar and him improving his submission defense is accurate, I don't see how Mir wins the fight.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
Mir's Black Belt and Grappling Tourney Acumen >>> Lesnar's Purple Belt from Minnesota MMA
Mir has the more prestigous trainers, It may keep lesnar from falling for the really obvious leglocks, but IF(Medium-Big If) Mir can keep Lesnar in his guard and out of mount, I can’t see it ending well for Lesnar.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
Lesnar was a champion NCAA wrestler too, it's not like he doesn't know how to grapple.
But I’m not trying to take an opposing opinion against you, I don’t dare test my knowledge on MMA against anyone.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
Nah, I know. He's going to take down Mir at will. If he wants.
But I doubt he passes guard and I doubt he can avoid the sub with Mir on his back.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
This is true, he wasn't able to break through Mir's guard in the first fight.
To his credit, he literally punched right through it more than a few times; however he’s actually not as strong now as he was then. He’s clearly adapted his training to involve more technique and probably flexibility at the cost of pure strength. He’s still stupid strong, but I don’t imagine that he’s strong enough anymore to blast his way through a good guard.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
Plus most of those shots were to the back of Mir's head.
Lesnar’s best chance at this fight is to clinch with Mir and just punishing his body with knees, and look for the big right hook in scrambles. Which could very well happen.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
I know it's only been a year, but if the Mir that shows up in the Nog fight comes(IE: Actually showing hand speed and striking defense), plus, lesnar's still very, very raw. His straight right looks incredibly clunky and slow coming out.
Lest we forget Heath herring’s always been overrated for beating the freakshow fighters in Japan, and Couture’s historically bad chin couldn’t have gotten any better in a 1.5 year layoff.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.
I'll have to take your word for it.
But I’m sure I’ll be entertained regardless of outcome.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
Obviously, I pumped. Stacked card from top to bottom
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

Here’s how manager Ozzie Guillen described the [Colon] situation to a group of reporters just before game time Wednesday: “To talk to Colon, you’ve got to talk to 20 different people. You got to talk to 30 different cousins, and then to his agent, who talks to his brother, his brother call his wife, his wife say he’s with Pedro, Pedro say he’s with Juan. I guarantee you I’ll call [President Barack] Obama, and we’ll have a talk before Colon answers the phone.”
I love talking to
30 different cousins, a brother, a wife, talking to pedro to juan. and then obama

Actually that doesn't include this game
Now it is 3 innings and 10 hits……
That isn’t good
He's getting groundballs...
I have no idea when I’d prefer him in the game. Bases empty and you figure someone will get on. Hate to see him come on with guys on base…

He missed one call to CC, but other than that has been consistent and more or less correct.
Been making their bullpen work a lot
Now just need to square one up
Haha

Chance of scoring 2 run this inning: 7.88%
