BA's Midseason Top 25 prospects
Suprised to see T-Becks that low, but he is also probably the youngest player on that list. Really good to see Davis and Jennings in the top 20.

On my personal prospects list.
I would put Davis third, Beckham second, and Jennings first.

Just among Davis/Beckham/Jennings?
Or among all prospects. You homer.

Just among Rays prospects.
I’m not sure where I would rank them league-wide, but I know it would be in that order.

Who would you rank 4th?
I guess you have to go Brignac, but Matt Moore has been so good this year.

Some combination of Brignac/Hellickson/Moore.
by R.J. Anderson on Jul 9, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
At this point, I've definitally got Moore ahead of Hellickson
and probably ahead of Brignac. Maybe ahead of Davis. His command this last month has been spectacular. His K/BB is almost 5/1 and the scouting reports are top notch. He could be everything we hoped McGee would be.

But Moore definitely has a case to be #4.

Although, I value hitters higher than pitchers because of the predictability accompanying them.

Agreed
Brignac is higher for me than you guys I think. I still see him as a plus defender at short with a stick that plays there. How is Alcides Escobar that high?

I've still got Beckham at 1.
Despite his early season hot streak, I see him being a mid-to upper .800 OPS guy. Which is fantastic for a plus defending CFer but I see Beckham doing the same thing and as a plus SS.

And I’m not sure you should. His stuff is just above-average. He has above-average command to go along with it, which is awesome, but that doesn’t make him a top-25 prospect. He’s a good one, but not a guy with a huge ceiling. He’s also had injury concerns.

That's because the Twins took awful players.
Gomez was is probably the best CFer in baseball, but he couldn’t hit then and he can’t hit now. Deolis Guerra was significantly overrated. His scouting reports never really matched his stats and his velocity was wildly inconsistent when they traded for him. Some outings he would touch 96 others he didn’t touch 91. And everyone knew what Humber was. A middle reliever/5th starter, nothing more. That package was putrid. The Sox had a better package, albeit one with lower ceilings. The Twins shot for the moon, hoping that Gomez would turn the raw tools he had into skills and Guerra would maintain his velocity and find his curve. Instead Gomez has remained stagnant and Guerra stuff regressed and he got hurt.

Is it possible Jennings could be up before Joyce?
maybe not this year (not that we need anything in RF right now with the Gabes doing very well) but a OF next year of CC-Upton-Jennings would be awesome. Put Jennings in the 9 hole and have a Jennings-Upton-CC 9-1-2 would fly around the basepaths. Add in Barty at 8 and we have 4 40+ potential SB players. That would be sweet.

Jennings has hit .235/.318/.337 over the last month in AA.
Yes, he’s been unlucky. Yes, he’s not nearly that bad. He’s certain insanely talented, but Joyce is very talented too. I don’t believe Jennings will be a regular in the big leagues until 2011.

not according to milb.com
.240/.331/.317 for June and .290/.353/.516 so far in July. Before that, he was tearing it up for 2 months straight. He was due for a small slump. Regardless, he’s still 6th in the Southern League with a .315 average on the season, and a .389 OBP. He’s more than holding his own. That being said, until he gets some mileage in AAA, it is a moot point. I hope they get him some AB in Durham and see how he handles it. I could still see him ready by middle of next year.
by raysfaninminnesota on Jul 9, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My numbers are from the last 28 days according to minorleaguesplits.com.
And my argument that he’s not in the big leagues until 2011 has absolutely nothing to do with when he’s ready. Joyce has been ready all season long. Brignac is almost certainly ready. Neither are in the big leagues. There has to be a spot for you. And there probably won’t be a spot for Jennings until 2011 unless CC is traded (which is obviously possible).
Tools Whore
by Tyler on Jul 9, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'm just saying that Joyce had better show something next time around
or he’ll get passed up by Jennings. Joyce has put up solid numbers in Durham, but Jennings can move up the ladder pretty fast if he stays healthy. Joyce still has to prove he can be a full-time player. Joyce also has to prove he can avoid high strikeouts. Jennings hits both lefties and righties (so far) and has a great eye at the plate (almost as many walks as strikeouts). Joyce has to show he can handle it, while with Jennings, it’s only a matter of time and experience.
by raysfaninminnesota on Jul 9, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Odds are Jennings is our left fielder come late 2010/2011.
And Joyce is our right fielder.
I don’t see an issue.

do you really think the Rays don't try to resign CC?
or just that they won’t be able to compete with a big market offer? CC has always said he wanted to create his own niche in TB and was never rushing to go anywhere else. With the market more down, perhaps they could resign him at his current salary? Then again, I’m probably naive.
by raysfaninminnesota on Jul 9, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can't imagine he won't try free agency
And even with a hometown discount, he’d still probably want a 4 – 5 year deal at $10M+ a year. He’ll be one of the better young free agent hitters to make it to the market in a while.
