As the Rays head into the offseason, they'll face that tough decision with Crawford: trade him to add younger, cheaper assets at key positions, or hold him through 2010, then collect compensatory draft picks when he signs a highly lucrative deal in New York or Boston or Chicago or L.A. The Rays have Desmond Jennings, a 22-year-old speed demon and five-tool prospect, ready and waiting in Triple-A after tearing up Double-A pitching for most of the season. He recently started playing left field, after handling center field for much of his minor league career. Prospect mavens project Jennings to become a top-of-the-order mainstay and future star.

Here is a question
do you still get compensatory picks if you don’t pick up an option? Also, what do you think Carl would get on the open market? If I remember correctly his option for next year is at 10mil, so what 5 year/50mil? I find it hard to believe that I team would pay him more than 12 per year.
He should be looking at a floor of 15M
I can't help that I make some things look easier than they really are.

12 per year low balling CC.
He’s worth anywhere from 16-18, and could get as much as 20 if the Yankees are feeling particularly generous.
Money for CC
Rays could use the money they’ll have after PtB’s contract expires to extend CC…what no one is considering is that in the current market and economy, CC may not make as much as everyone expects…though $15M is probably a good range, which the Rays need to spend to keep a future HoFer in house.

You can decline the option then offer arbitration to get picks.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 10, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions
And of course declining the option in favor of arbitration would be a horrible decision since an arbitrator would likely give him 15M+ and force the team to bow out with nothing.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.
Yes, but you would need to offer arbitration
Which could defeat the purpose, since he would be due more in arbitration than he is under the team option.

Almost under any circumstances
We’re better off picking up the option and trading him. A free supplemental first rounder (chance of making the majors around 33%, chance of making an impact at the majors closer to 5%) and a 50% chance of getting a late first round pick probably isn’t worth as much as we could get in a trade for an underpaid star player.

"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Excuse me - could backfire
It’s probably a reasonable gamble here though – Crawford probably stands to make more as a free agent, even next year, than he would in arbitration.
However, at the moment, Crawford is only a Type B free agent, in which case it probably wouldn’t be worth the risk.

OT: Don't know if this has been reported on here yet
per Marc Topkin
Tampa Bay Rays Troy Percival appears likely to retire
RHP Troy Percival hasn’t made it official, but he is unlikely to pitch again according to manager Joe Maddon.
Percival hasn’t announced his retirement, but after corresponding with him last week, Maddon is under the impression that his career is over. "I think so,’’ Maddon said.
Maddon invited Percival, who’s been home in southern California since going on the DL in late May, to visit with the team during the series in Anaheim that starts Monday.
Agent Paul Cohen said Sunday no decision has been made, but that Percival has been having severe back problems and will see a specialist this week with the possibility of needing a fusion. Percival – who turned 40 Sunday – had back surgery during the offseason.
"It’s been very, very problematic,’’ Cohen said. "It’s been tough for him.’’

I wasn't suggesting that...
The player and team negotiated a contract in good faith. There’s nothing to suggest that Percy hasn’t attempted to fulfill his contract to the best of his ability. It seems silly to begrudge the man the money he is due. I know you weren’t suggesting that he doesn’t deserve the money, but others.

We don't need another OF we are set there
I’ll take a stud 1B, though and a lefty pitcher that k’s almost 10/9. Let Professor X work on him in Durham for a minute and see if we can reform him.

If that's the return we get for CC, then I'm going to pout.
Heyward is the top prospect in baseball, IMO. We have to get the best players we can and sort it out later. We signed Los on a freesie. There are tons of 3TO 1Bs out there to fill that role until we develop from within.
So long, Sweet Lime!
I think you underestimate the ability of Wallace
FG ranked him the #1 prospect traded this year. He could probably use another year in AAA, but that’s when Pena leaves anyway. Gio has a .299 BAa this year with a .379 Babip, he gets 46% GB’s he just needs to cut his walks. A’s aren’t looking to take on salary, so this will never happen, but throw in a low level prospect and that is my ideal package.

I don't underestimate Wallace (earlier this year, I wanted to trade for him), I just like Heyward better. Wallace cant run, field, and many are down on his power ceiling.

Of course, everyone likes Heyward.

We already have Desmond Jennings
Why would you want another OF just because he is the #1 guy? His perceived value dwarfs the utility we would get from him.

The point is moot.
No way the Braves trade him. That’s like “we should trade for Justin Upton.” Neither are happening.
I know,
personally I’d like to see if we can get Josh Thole from the Mets.

Desmond can only cover so much outfield.
I know we bust trends (until matthan points out that we don’t) around here, but really – 1 OF is pretty risky.

Maybe. But CC is entering his prime now. You can bet on him to be a stud DTD with a far higher degree of accuracy than you can with a 20 year old.

You also have to pay him 16M vs the 400k they will have to pay Heyward
Something tells me they will take the risk of Heyward

I'd hate to see CC go.
I really would. If this is the kind of play we can expect out of him for the next 4 years+, I’d really like to see a way for the team to lock him up for that length of time. I know it sounds unreasonable considering his price tag and available replacements, but he is, and I can’t say this enough, the best left-fielder in baseball right now. He’s a terror on the basepaths, probably the best basestealer in the game and the best we’ve seen since Tim Raines. And his newfound patience with the stick genuinely makes him a terror pitchers don’t want to face. We’re talking about letting a possible hall-of-famer go because he’s expensive and we have a cheaper, capable option in AAA.
If the Rays elect not to resign him, I’m not going to be angry at the team, or CC for that matter, for letting the market and team flexibility to drive his salary. Everything says that letting him go is both an easy and smart decision. But if there’s any way the two can mutually come together and keep him around into his 30s, I’d take a bullet for him the next time center field tries to ambush his knees.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.

Ending up with the Dodgers to replace Manny makes sense
That wouldn’t be too bad to see
The Dodgers strike me as a team that is going to want power out of their corner OFers; they might steer clear of him unless he's willing to play CF.

Also, in a senario such as this, I highly doubt their the highest bidder.
There’s also a chance that the team that trades for him signs him to an extension on trade, if it’s a big-budget team.
