OTTOTD: 8/12 (The "The Good Guys Can't Win Away From Home" Edition)

To discuss:

USA v Mexico tonight from Mexico City. A house of horrors for Uncle Sam's boys. This is the biggest game the US has played since Germany06 by far. Win, and it goes a long way toward qualifying for South Africa. Kickoff's at 4pm.

Fermi satellite may detect hypothesized dark matter within five years. Weird, wild stuff.

Miyazaki's latest, "Ponyo", opens this weekend. I know P Brady's seeing it. Are you?

And I hope rugby sevens makes it into the Olympis over baseball

What we need is more sports that are only played in Oceana and a few other countries, in which Fiji is a dominant force.

Curious trivia:

the last Olympic Gold Medal for rugby was won by the U.S.A. in Paris, 1924 (where they were defending their gold medal win in 1920)

I love rugby sevens: Fiji, Samoa, Western Samoa and Tonga light it up…. but it will be a travesty if baseball misses out.

the US needs to avoid giving up an early goal, while it seems obvious

they really seem to gain confidence the longer they stay tied or lead an opponent.

oh Esteban

Marlins signed RHP Esteban Yan to a minor league contract.

Yan will report to Triple-A New Orleans. He was pitching in the independent Atlantic League and could potentially join the Marlins’ bullpen by September. Then again, the 34-year-old hasn’t appeared in the major leagues since 2006.

The team that eventually became the Marlins was originally supposed to come to TB. This was after the Twins and White Sox failed to relocate here.

St. Pete even built the Trop to lure a team here/show committment to MLB. But at the 11th hour, Huizenga swooped in and promised more money (seems hilarious now) and glamour if they put the FL team in Miami.

So long, Sweet Lime!

It’s NAR (Nudity Above Replacement) value is tremendous.

So long, Sweet Lime!

by PlayOnWords on Aug 12, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

The subsurface complications in Bill/Sookie's relationship are very similar to Buffy/Angel

I guess its true for every story where a human falls in love with a vampire, but the shared medium draws a more immediate comparison to Buffy. There are other things – the best friend with serious parental issues (Tara, Xander), vampire bars, the loyal, misunderstood shapeshifter forced into loneliness (Oz, Sam), death of the matron figure, misguided siblings (Jason, Dawn).

True Blood has the opportunity to explore dark themes in much darker ways, though, and excels.

So long, Sweet Lime!
