• Catch those Rays: Clubs monitoring the waiver wire say the Rays' Jeff Niemann and Andy Sonnanstine both got claimed this week -- and were immediately pulled back.

Pretty sure Andrew probably

Put the entire or most of team on waivers, almost every team does. In most cases like Sonny and Big Nyquil he’s probably seeing what teams were interested for future reference.

Surprised we didn't hear anything on this front

I get that we probably aren’t moving Niemann, but wonder what Sonny would have brought.

Almost everybody is put on waivers and we never hear about it

Because they are pulled back and everybody moves on. I’d love to see the list of players Friedman has claimed

That's interesting. Not that they put them on waivers, everyone is put on waivers

but that they immediately pulled Sonnanstine back and didn’t explore a trade.

From a scouting mind:

• On James Shields: “His stuff just hasn’t been the same. I don’t know for sure that he’s feeling the residue from last year’s workload. But he didn’t have as good a fastball from the get-go.”

Shields using his changeup less is expected

Expect him to use it less next year also

Can David Ortiz please send Dioner Navarro some of his PED's? K? Thanks

Why would you expect this?

I understand there a is strong stistical evidence that pitchers use their change up less under Jim Hickey, but at some point shouldn’t that level off on an individual pitcher? He’s seen a huge dropoff in usage.

In effectiveness as well

Chicken and egg, I suppose

I can't help that I make some things look easier than they really are.

Sabathia is doomed too oh noez

Shields
34 34 0 0 226 242 107 95 27 57 158 10 11 100.2 1.32 .272 3.79
Sabathia
34 34 3 1 230 206 102 97 20 64 175 17 10 105.9 1.17 .240 3.76

Shields’s problem is just basically first-pitch fastball & HRs isn’t it?
