I wonder how long until talk show types find a way to compare LeVon Washington to B.J. Upton. Both are obviously self-entitled, money-greedy little punks with nothing better to do but climb in trees and eat bananas all day.

And that makes LeVon sad (and Barry even sadder).

Were you even alive when The State was on the air?
I found a new happy show yesterday though. On Starz. Party Down – starring Ken Marino. He was the one guy from The State who seemed to completely disappear off the face of the planet. On the not so bright side, the Michael & Michael Have Issues show is one of the worse State progeny.

I wasn't surprised by Diekroeger not signing.
I think he is going to be a first class ball player down the line. I am dissappointed in Washington. The man comes out and says that he “wants to be a Ray.” Well, obviously that was just lip service. The rays don’t need another Wade Townsand in regards to being injury prone. Good luck to both of you young-men in the future, though.

although the Tigers are going to be a beast now. I don’t know exactly what the thoughts were on that deal but my guess is it has a lot to do with the possibility of having to play the Yankees in the post-season. Huff gives them a good LHB to hit between Cabrera and Ordonez
Tigers are far from a beast
They have rotation, health & bullpen issues and w/o Inge have a problem at 3rd, basically guarantees Longoria wins the GG now, there’s no 3B left in the AL

yes
I’m not sure who has the #2 pick next year but they aren’t going to be much better than the Nats. Nats need to just pay him, and than pay Harper next year. Trade Dunn, Nick Johnson, and whoever else is wasting their money. * note by wasting I don’t mean they aren’t good players, I mean they aren’t going to win right now with or without them so they might as well pull a Pittsburgh.
The Nats may not have the #1 pick next year

I can't see going to two million.
I would say around 1.6, 1.7 as my absolute ceiling. He’s was properly evaluated value wise. No outside forces (i.e. strong academic commitment or football) driving his price up. He’s hurt and doesn’t seem likely to drive up his value significantly in JUCO.
I’m guessing he was asking 2 million and stood firm, but that’s just speculation.

Bryce Harper is his name.
Although Harper got dominated last night in the AFLAC All-American game. 0-5 with 3K’s. But don’t think Harper is going to come cheap. He will want to break Strasburg’s bonus record and he’ll have leverage. He’s going to JUCO, playing against guys 2-3 years older than him. Teams will get him as what amounts to be a HS senior and if he performs up to his tools, he’ll have more leverage than anyone in draft history including Strasburg.

Kyle Parker did something similar to this at Clemson
He graduated in December of his senior year of high school, and enrolled early for football/baseball. He ended up having a really good season in 2008 (All-ACC) before taking a step back this past season.
didn't UNC have a kid this past season
who graduated HS a semester early and enrolled so he could play in the spring.
I don't know about UNC
But Robert Stock graduated a year early to go to USC. Not doing as well as he had hoped I’m sure (he was projected to be a top 10 pick coming out of high school, had he graduated), but he’s draft eligible next year. He’ll be catching AND in the starting rotation for USC. First season pitching regularly there – he’d only seen spot duty up to this point, but after putting up pedestrian hitting numbers the past two years, I guess he’s going what he can to improve his draft stock.

The Tigers have signed No. 9 overall pick Jacob Turner to a major league contract with a $4.7 million bonus (payable over six years) and a guaranteed value of $5.5 million. Depending on how quickly he reaches the majors, he could push the total value to nearly $7 million.
Brad Ziegler had a scoreless inning streak. Brad Ziegler had not met BJ Upton.

The reports even a couple days ago
was they wanted to get him in and get a physical to make sure his shoulder was healing properly (which is exactly what’s being reported today) and that hasn’t happened. They may have the medical records from June, but they want their doctors to check him out today and without them and given the difference in asking price (no idea what his was) they saw no way to make it happen.
Tools Whore
I don't see us drafting him if we felt his shoulder was a concern.
There’s a red board for those matters. As far as I know, he wasn’t on it.

It really is odd and unexpected
which gives me hope
I mean A) Rays always sign their first rounder but much more so B) they NEVER announce anything until its over and they announced they wont sign LeVon this morning
1. James Shields 2. Scott Kazmir 3. Matt Garza 4. David Price 5. Jeff Niemann
question as far as the money is concerned
while it isn’t a huge amount, if we don’t sign these top picks will we be able to use the money saved in the off-season. cough help trade for Gonzalez cough
can we still trade for Gonzalez lol
but in theory would it increase the draft budget for next year if we decide to draft another Boras guy or something.
hes cheap anyway
but neither is a DH, I wonder where Pena would go and what we would give up
1. James Shields 2. Scott Kazmir 3. Matt Garza 4. David Price 5. Jeff Niemann
if we can convince someone to trade for Pena
between him, Bartlett, and Kaz and what we have we should be able to build a prospect package for Gonzalez plus still keep C.C. It would prolly start with Davis + what we get for Barty/Kaz. I’m not sure we could get a bunch back for Pena and definately not as much as the other 2 guys, although I could be wrong.
well it wouldn't be every single player moving
I’ve said before I could see this off-season being very videogameish (new word). With Brignac, Joyce, Davis/Hellickson plus the thought we will need/get a new catcher. I could see at least 3-4 regulars getting traded. We can either hang onto all the prospects we get in return or turn them (not all but some) into other cheaper ML players who are good like a Gonzalez type who SD seems to be shopping for some reason.
we can def cash in for Barty
and its too smart not too
the spects he would bring back would be awesome and Pena in his last year should at least bring something back. I am stuck in the past and wanna keep Kazmir but with all those spects from Barty and Pena, I don’t think Davis would be needed as well
1. James Shields 2. Scott Kazmir 3. Matt Garza 4. David Price 5. Jeff Niemann
I think we should do the same with Crawford
unless he gives us a great home town discount we aren’t going to be able to resign him and his stock isn’t going to be higher than this off-season most likely and Joyce is ready to take over an OF spot.. Although it would be sad to see him go
CC in a FA year may be even better
I would hold on to him, take the picks and let Jennings take over
1. James Shields 2. Scott Kazmir 3. Matt Garza 4. David Price 5. Jeff Niemann
well whoever we trade him to would get him for a year and 1/2 before he goes to either a New York or Cali team.
maybe we can convince Florida to give us Maybin plus a few of their stud arms
Deezy/Upton/Maybin although not CC/Deezy/Upton is pretty damn sexy too.
Maybin reminds me of the old CC
so much potential but in the minors and the SSS in the majors, he hacks at everything
Maybe to the hated Phillies for a package involving Taylor
1. James Shields 2. Scott Kazmir 3. Matt Garza 4. David Price 5. Jeff Niemann
he can do one thing no one else in TB seems to be able too
hit lefties, at least in the minors ,998 OPS this year, .897 career.
Trade him to the Dodgers or something
they can afford to keep him and he will be far far away from being able to kill us
1. James Shields 2. Scott Kazmir 3. Matt Garza 4. David Price 5. Jeff Niemann

If I was a player, I’d hire Boras too. The man is brilliant. However it is his fault, if he doesn’t sign because he overvalues himself. He should absolutely hold out and get as much money as possible though. And if he confident enough in his own ability that he can up his value next year by getting his shoulder healthy and playing well then he shouldn’t sign. It’s risky, but good for him.

I'm not sure exactly how slotting works
but why not have it where every pick has a range of say 500,000 (early, and less by pick/round) and the contract has to be in those ranges. That way there isn’t this over-slotting because it wouldn’t be allowed and if a team tries to sign someone for more than baseball voids the deal and same goes for under range. A team would be required to offer at least the minimum for that pick although would be allowed to forego a draft pick (not pick a player.)

so it is 4 years once he is in the big leagues
which is going to be mid-season next year latest, with the Nats it wouldn’t shock me if he opens the season there.
No.
It’s just to spread the bonus.
He’s under Nats control for six big league seasons.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 18, 2009 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions
Doesn't work that way.
Draft contracts don’t mean the teams control them any less time.
Tools Whore
It potentially does
It means he uses up an option from day 1. Or they have to send him to the majors now and he starts accruing service time.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Okay, but I mean from a service time perspective.
Not from an actual control perspective. Options aren’t expected to be an issue with him.
Tools Whore
Probably not
But stranger things have happened.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
If he's not in the show in 3 years, he's probably never going to be anything
in the big leagues anyway because his shoulder was destroyed.
Tools Whore
No, he'll be arbitration eligible
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Over only 4 years though
Which means it’s really for more like $40 million through free agency
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
The brilliant part
Is that if it’s 4 years, it forces the Nats to either call him up right now, or pay out the wazoo in year 5, because a player’s salary can only go down to 80% of the previous year in arbitration. If he’s scheduled to make $7M in his 4th year, then that guarantees him over $5M in year 5, and if he actually does well, he’ll get a significant increase over that. Could end up setting a record for most money made in arbitration.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
He's going to be arbitration eligible for the first time the season his 4 year deal runs out
Which is why this deal is so brilliant. He gets every penny of his bonus without any overlap in arbitration.
Tools Whore
But on top of it, even if he sucks, he'll get big money
Because he’ll be making so much before he’s arb eligible.
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog
"Baseball is played on the field, not on a calculator."
Well, if he sucks bad enough to not be worth 5 million they'll just non-tender him.
But you’re right, even if he’s not very good, assuming he can throw a baseball at a somewhat acceptable level, he’s basically guaranteed himself 25-30 million dollars in career earnings. Simply amazing.

I don't agree with the point either
both owner and player is taking a risk when signing a contract after being drafted. I don’t see the position of the player as being particularly bad.
Yes both are taking risks.
Nobody said otherwise.
The player has every right to try and get what he considers is fair value. That’s why he has an agent like Boras. If Boras mislead or miscalculated his value, then shame on him, but I don’t see a problem with a player going for more money.
by R.J. Anderson on Aug 18, 2009 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions
me neither
I just don’t think its anything like indentured servitude, etc. It’s actually a pretty nice situation for the players. That is what having the strongest union in the world does for you.
How many people bring up Matt Harrington?
Boras wasn’t Matt Harrington’s agent until like the 3rd time he got drafted. It wasn’t his fault.
What about all the players he’s maximized their value? Luke Hochevar was a villain turning down the 2.25 million the Dodgers offered him. A jerk, they stopped negotiations with him. He got him over double that the next year when he went 1-1.

This sentence doesn't make any sense.
So a player should feel honored that a team selected them and just accept whatever they offer despite the market value?
Lets say you’re a teacher by trade and that’s what you’ve always wanted to do your entire life. Got to school and learn how to teach, graduate top of your class with honors. Well the average starting salary is 37K for a teach, but the school district decides they only want to pay you 23K. Would you take that? Does it make any sense to take that when you can go to another district and make more money even if you have to wait till next school year.

They never once discussed money, so there were no terms.
His family thought about baseball but his multimillionaire father decided he’d be just fine financially going to Stanford and pro ball would still be there in 3 or 4 years.

if you believe the rays on that
then you should believe they offered levon slot. In which case, he was stupid to turn it down.

I actually would be shocked if the Rays didn't offer Levon last years slot.
But if LeVon and Boras think he can get more next year after a year of JUCO and rehab that shoulder then it might turn out to be the right move.
Hochevar fell to the supplemental first round, fired Boras, agreed to a contract worth 2.25 million, backed out of the contract, rehired Boras, had the Dodgers completely stop negotiating with him. They bad mouthed him publicly and privately. Was ripped relentlessly by everyone for his immaturity and stupidity. How was he going to turn down all that money? Well, he signed a 5.3 million dollar contract the next year as the #1 overall pick. Boras knows what he’s doing, ultimately it’s LeVon’s decision and just because you or the majority don’t think it’s the right one doesn’t mean it won’t turn out to be.
Tools Whore
well, i guess we'll find out in a year or two
whether it was the right decision
You cant tell me that they didn't atleast entertain him with a hypothetical number
Thats stupid to get drafted #2 and not atleast ask what you would’ve gotten
