lets all pile on the 1 guy outside of JP Howell who has been really good in our pen all year
yes Cormier fucked up tonight, but lets look at another theme that was fufilled tonight, the top 4 in our order getting 80% of our hits.

Shields should have never walked Pie

It doesn't change a thing
Does Sabathia come out there? Beckett? Lee? Halladay?
i doubt it very highly

well if we feel it is necessary to carry a million relievers
we need to use them in those situations. Just like I thought Niemann should have been pulled yesterday after 7 innings, Shiels being pulled there was the right decision.
by Dbullsfan on Aug 20, 2009 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree on tonight, agree on Nieman
by sternfan1 on Aug 20, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
other than RBA how can you say that
Niemann had just given up a deep fly ball to end the 7th (a sign that he was wearing down). Shields had just given up a walk to the #9 hitter to load the bases (a sign of wearing down). It is the same situation you can’t say it was right one time and wrong the other just because of the results.
by Dbullsfan on Aug 20, 2009 10:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
here is why
i’d rather let a reliever start an inning off, rather than inherit runners
in Shields case, he’s our ace, let him work his way out
look above at what other top pitchers do
by sternfan1 on Aug 20, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Shields was on the brink of collapse when he let Pie off the hook
Earlier in the year, I would agree, but Shields has lost his moxie. The problem was who they chose to bring in. It is very clear JP Howell is our traditional closer who will sometimes go past 1 inning. He is not a default high leverage pitcher. I still have faith in Balfour in this typ eof situation, but If Joe doesn’t he needs to use JP. Maddon’s bullpen management has not pleased me since he dyed his hair black.

Chadford please
If he wasn’t ready then he should have stayed down and left Briggy up
I can't help that I make some things look easier than they really are.
by Sandy Kazmir on Aug 21, 2009 8:35 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Eh, ready and throwing him into that fire are not the same
Balfour is tough on lefties, rarely gives up HRs, and strikes out 9 per 9. He’s had some unsustainable BABIP success vs him this year @ .320. Hes the guy for that situation. hes walked 0.84/9 the past 30 days

They just don’t win the games that they should.

Anyone he didn't read the GDT or are just looking for something to get somewhat exited about
Hellickson tonight 5 innings 3 hits, 2 runs (1 earned) 1 bb 10 K 16 Swinging Strikes 92 pitches.
Lobstein also struck out 10 tonight.
by Dbullsfan on Aug 20, 2009 10:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That's wonderful, but if you told me he went 7 IP i'd be happier
by sternfan1 on Aug 20, 2009 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
it was a blow-out
had it been closer he prolly would have gone out there at least for the 6th. He has pitched over 100 PC and he was only at 92.

point is, our SP whether it's A, AA, AAA or MLB

If you can't hit the damn zone with an 0-2 count
you’re finished stamina wise, but of course, Navi was an idiot for not calling for better pitches
by Transplanted on Aug 20, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It was really wierd
because shields looked greating King moeller on 3 pitches then he got ahead 0-2 on pie and he just lost it.
by RaysTheRoof on Aug 20, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he threw more CHs to Moeller than he did to Pie
he didn’t throw a CH until it was 2-2
by Transplanted on Aug 20, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So Navi's pitching calling was suspect
for some reason im not surprised.
by RaysTheRoof on Aug 20, 2009 11:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
according to pitchfx
Shields threw to Moeller inside 2 seam, inside change down & in change
Pie was low 2 seam, inside curve, up & away 2 seam, up & away 4 seam, lower change, up & away cutter(4 fastballs basically)
He missed pathetically because they were all the same pitch basically

This is a stupid point
Minor league pitchers rarely go deep into games. Putting unnecessary innings on young pitchers is not smart, imo. Nolan Ryan obviously disagrees.

I'd say so but apparently Hellickson=Sonny
although I don’t get the comparison
by Dbullsfan on Aug 20, 2009 10:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Geez--i sure hope not and if so
why did we not dump him for Bay last year?
by sternfan1 on Aug 20, 2009 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was being sarcastic, I don't think he is but I guess some do
but than again I’ve seen him pitch and from what I saw his stuff is way better than anything I saw stuff wise from Sonny.

I think everyone can agree (except maybe rglass)
hellickson>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>sonny
by RaysTheRoof on Aug 20, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So many things could've gone differently that would've changed the outcome
Longoria makes that play instead of an error
Maddon leaves in Shields or puts in Chadford/Balfour instead of Cormier
BJ puts down a decent bunt, steals second, JB drives him in
by acablue on Aug 20, 2009 10:54 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Shields retired the #9 instead of walking him to load the bases for one of the best lead-off guys in baseball
by Dbullsfan on Aug 20, 2009 10:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He was up 0-2 and threw four straight balls
If we are going to carry 2 loogys why not bring one in to face roberts??? If Maddon has no intention of using them in these types of situations I really don’t see their utility.
by RaysTheRoof on Aug 20, 2009 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
you do realize Cormier is better against lefties than either of our two loogy's?
by Dbullsfan on Aug 20, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
which then leads me to this Q
if so, why do we need two?
by sternfan1 on Aug 20, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ding ding ding
I think everyone in Tampa wonders that questions except AF or Joe or whoever deals with the 25 man roster.
by Dbullsfan on Aug 20, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
25 man roster
is completely controlled by AF & co
by RaysTheRoof on Aug 20, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
yea I don't get at all why we have 2 (or for that matter any) loogys
Choate was great early in the season but has been awful over the past couple months and Shouse just isn’t that good. I would rather an extra bat and Sonny for the pen.
by Dbullsfan on Aug 20, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Extra bat to give some more flexibility
since Maddon is intent on sitting guys all the time and getting everyone in the some playing time.

like tonight when he was boxed into having hit Gross v LHP

I realize his numbers are better this season yes.
However, fairly SSS I think. Also, if Maddon considers him a viable option against lefties then there is no possibly reason to carry Shouse and Choate.
by RaysTheRoof on Aug 20, 2009 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He threw 4 balls 3 were up & away Fastballs
There was no change up which is what was troubling, throw that CH earlier & you probably get Pie
by Transplanted on Aug 20, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
not to mention he is a SH and his splits aren't that far off
except in power.
by Dbullsfan on Aug 20, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
OPS was a little more swayed because of the HR but his avg was only different by .02
and at that point any hit would have hurt (hindsight says different but at the time)
by Dbullsfan on Aug 20, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
honestly i thought he was going to walk him
once the count got to 3-2, something bad was bound to happen.
by RaysTheRoof on Aug 20, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
cormeir seems to have done more for the team than shields this year
but then, I’m not up on all the statts so I may be wrong here

It goes without saying that 2/3 is a must vs. Texas
If not, I will be looking forward to 2010.
by acablue on Aug 20, 2009 11:00 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
That's sadly probably true
Lose the series to Texas, it’s over, because we can’t keep asking Boston or Texas to keep losing if we don’t win
by Transplanted on Aug 20, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Also, can we DFA springer for sonny please.
(may be slight overreaction)
by RaysTheRoof on Aug 20, 2009 11:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
We need a really good lefty
Not another Loogy, that’s the flaw to the pen, with JP in the back end, no one to be that tough lefty
by Transplanted on Aug 20, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think a worse pitching decision
other than the shields/cormier debate was deciding to have a fastball pitcher in springer come into face the fastball hitter in reimold (who doubled off him earlier in the series)
i know bradford just came back from injury, but he gets paid for situations just like that
maddon probably wanted to ease him in for his first appearance since the injury, but you gotta go with him there imo
by Schmidt on Aug 20, 2009 11:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Hindsight is 20/20
If you put in Bradford and he gives up a single or a double, we’d all be here slamming Maddon for putting in a guy who just got off the DL. There’s no way to know these things in advance. Cormier just made a mistake right in the middle of the plate.
