We better see lots and lots and lots of sliders and changeups from Price today

This lineup can hit fastballs so Price can’t continue to rely on it so much.

by 4QB on Aug 23, 2009 11:42 AM EDT reply actions

Because you can't block without taking a risk..

The risk being 3.5 million for Billy Wagner. The Rays aren’t in position to take that risk. The Mets have nothing to lose in just pawning Wagner off on whoever claimed him.

by tallyray on Aug 23, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Once you claim to block, they don't need to claim a portion for anything

You have to work out the monetary deal before you claim. If someone else just claims without working out a deal, then they could just have him.

You rep the Rays … no wonder we have dreck position players in the minor leagues and we miss out on getting the one or two guys that can make a difference.
I forgot they traded Corcoran … so throw in some other Mariner garbage pitcher. It’s the
only kind they have. Jojima is better than ANY catcher the RAYS have at any level, save for Zaun. And Jojima is only average on a good day.
Burrell, blindfolded, is better than Langerhans and Saunders put together. If all you want is a weak hitting, mediocre outfielder playing LF, Saunders and Langerhans are your guys. And it’s not because Burrell is all that good on defense, it’s these guys are about the same, but at least Burrell can hit the ball out of the infield.
The idea, dummy was to SAVE money, not build the 1927 Yankees.
And for sure you are braindead if you don’t understand … but I will enlighten you.
You trade Burrell and Iwamura, you save $13 million. You are stuck paying that amount if you keep both players. Now both of those guys would help the M’s. Aki is a gold glove 3B guy.
Burrell can DH and play LF and since the M’s have Gutuierrez and Ichiro in CF & RF, they can
afford to take a hit defensively in LF, provided the guy they get CAN HIT some and with pop.
The M’s free up money since Beltre is a FA and he is way over priced, so they can let him walk.
But he is a good glove … so that would leave a big hole for them at 3B, since they have no one
comparable glove wise in the minors.
Okay now let’s look at who has any value on the M’s … that they would part with. Bedard &
Jojima … Everyone needs a back up catcher who can hit some, so trade wise Jojima has value.
The sticking point is how much will he cost. Bedard is as good a pitcher as there is in baseball,
when he is healthy.
His health issues are a problem. But even if he can come back at 75% he is better than anyone on the RAYS and probably by a bunch. The question is can he start again and hold up? Maybe, but
probably not … On the other hand, NO TEAM is going to light up Bedard over two innings if he is even 75% healthy. At 100%, he would be money in the bank … to close two games a week.
And sure it’s a gamble.
So we end up with Bedard and Jojima … we trade Jojima for some position prospects and end up with Bedard and a better future … ANY other players are just window dressing.
The reason I put in Corcoran and the like, is everyone needs middle relief … if you have a bunch of guys with MLB experience waiting in AAA, you can use them if you have health issues in your pen
or trade them as part of a package for a key piece you need to get to the promised land, or shore up you minor league crew.
You don’t always trade people, because they can play for you.

Langerhans is one of the best defensive outfieldersin baseball.

It’s almost like you should judge players off their offensive and defensive contributions combined.

“Everybody needs middle reliever”

Bullshit. Middle reliever is the most fungible position in baseball. If you can’t find middle reliever without giving up half your roster then you might need to take up a different sport.

If anyone takes that guy seriously …

Next year should provide some plus opportunities for us … those extra picks, we move up because it is unlikely we make the playoffs. There are some quality players in the SEC and the PAC 10 who will become draftable next year.

And of course there are the guys our scouts should be out finding that are not on everyone’s radar.
But hey, when you rep the RAYS you can bet that hard work and smarts are not in the mix.

I like how he names two big conferences and says there will be quality players available. Really? I bet in the NFL draft a few SEC and B12 players will be taken in the first round.

Also, the last line bugs me. He basically wants a bunch of short white guys.

Because Upton can't hit anymore?

Gross vs feldman is just way better than Upton. If they put a lefty in then it really isn’t an upgrade, but at least feldman would be out of the game.

maybe when rosters expand

and fernie can take over in CF

but that may be too late

by Schmidt on Aug 23, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, he's just not a good hitter at this point

Defense is great, but it isn’t as important when we are down by three late in the game

but hey let’s carry 38383838 pitchers so we can continue letting hitters hit in chances where they have very low chance at success

Can David Ortiz please send Dioner Navarro some of his PED's? K? Thanks

Eric Bruntlett makes an error in the 9th for the Phillies and the mets are threatening with the tying run on 1st

so what does Eric Bruntlett do……makes an unassisted triple play to end the game……unbelievable

.188/.257/.250

That’s what we held their hitters to. I wouldn’t say the pitchers didn’t do their jobs.
