Josh Hamilton is pious and repentant

Haha, no he isn't.
The girls left. According to one patron, Hamilton, piss-drunk by that point, asked the manager where he could buy blow. The manager didn't know. "Let's go to a strip club," Hamilton said. Someone drove Hamilton to Les Girls in Phoenix, Arizona.
It sure seems like nothing has changed for The Natural.
He's still talented, injury prone, and probably still a drug addict. I have always said that losing him in the Rule 5 wasn't a big deal, and I was glad he's gone. He's a terrible influence on those around him despite being given chance after chance to get things right.
Remember that Elijah Dukes was run out of town after given a total of 1 disciplinary action. Josh Hamilton was here for 9 years, given chance after chance. The last trouble Dukes got into was for showing up late to a game because he spent too long at a charity event.

Oh, were we not showing the proper amount of sympathy for the hypocrite?
This is a Rays website. We’re fans of the team that spend millions of dollars on him and gave him every conceivable chance. It wasn’t until he found a way off the team that he attempted to make himself better.
After he cloaked himself in religion and put himself forth as a reformed paragon of virtue I’ve got no sympathy.
Sorry bro.

Him being on the Rays gives Rays fans prospective. Everyone else in the league sees him as OMG REDEMPTION STORY
But we put up with his lies for 9 years. It would be a sad story if we didn’t have to read the stories about how great he is and how much he is a symbol for what’s great about Christian virtue over and over again for the last two years.

"Put up with his lies"?
Excuse me? What lies? Yeah, he tried to come back many times and succumbed to drug use. Then he changed organizations and turned his life around. I don’t see what the heck people are angry about.
“It wasn’t until he found a way off the team that he attempted to make himself better.”
That statement is bullshit, because like I said, he got re-instated WHILE STILL WITH THE RAYS. The dude wasn’t being selfish, he just had a hell of a hard time turning his life around. It’s unfortunate that it happened after he left our organization, but can’t you just be happy that he turned things around? Of course he shouldn’t be deified for getting into that stuff in the first place, but it happens, and a lot of people aren’t as lucky as Hamilton to turn things around. There’s nothing to suggest this was anything besides a one-time instance, and apparently he did the right things after(told Rangers GM Jon Daniels, etc).

It's the same reason that family-first/faith-based politicians get grilled when their inevitable scandal shows up
Nobody likes to be told that someone is better than them because they practice a certain faith or live a certain way, especially when it’s a facade to get other “do-gooders” to let them in the club. Many people live rich, fulfilling lives that impact their community and fellow man without rubbing peoples noses in it. Many more half ass it and do so only when people are watching.

The media loves a story
They made money building him up, and they can make money tearing him down. I’m glad I don’t have people selling pictures of my screw-ups to the media or making them available to the public on the county sheriff’s website. Yeah, he’s a mess. But he’s a talented mess and in this country that can still be rewarded. In China this guy would be shoveling coal out of some mine on the verge of collapse, or already dead. My post isn't really in regard to...
this thread in particular, but rather a general observation from many other threads.
It’s impossible not to notice that if someone disagrees with the general consensus the sarcasm and other language used at them is easy to interpret as arrogance. Often times it’s just some witty one-liner or a zinger but in any event, the regulars to this board are a crowd who seem to go about their business assuming they are correct some high percentage of the time b/c their stats show they are.
As to Mr. Hamilton’s fall off of the wagon, he is human and that can be expected. I do not follow his life closely but I am familiar with his past addictions, his healing and becoming a Christian and apparently having quite a relapse in the off-season.
I am not a drug counselor and I, like you, have had experience close to home with someone who had a substance abuse problem. It’s a hard issue to deal with so therefore, unlike several others I won’t cast stones at Josh Hamilton. I wish him the best of luck in getting his life in order and while he may preach the Gospel, he is not without his own pitfalls.

I'm going to stick my nose where it doesn't belong (no pun intended)
My opinion on Hamilton has always been, and continues to be, none. He is a man who allowed himself to be possessed by bad habits, and whether one believes that is a method of choice, a personality disorder, or a genetic trait, it does not matter to me.
He is however, someone who has made substantial noise about how his habit affected him and how his beliefs and support group that have surrounded him allowed him to lift himself above it. He’s also been given a ton of chances already and has managed to mostly avoid criticism by the mainstream media. This, simply put, is not fair. TG#1 drew a parallel to Elijah Dukes and the number of chances he got. I do not at all agree with his POV based from that perspective. Dukes did not get in trouble for the same reasons Hamilton did, they’re not comparable situations.
But that doesn’t mean that I don’t agree with the tone of what he’s saying. It’s a whole lot easier to see what’s wrong here when you compare him to Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, or even Michael Irvin or Deion Sanders. All four of these players have had similar drug problems, all four of them ‘found god’ and all four of them relapsed. And when each one relapsed, they were individually railed upon repeatedly by the media, both local and national, with a merciless effort. In my eyes, Hamilton is the same as they are. I’m not at all surprised that people here aren’t showing sympathy to him. And I’m not surprised that the media has more or less already given him a pass on the issue. If anything, I’m happy to see how the initial reporting outlet (deadspin) refused to give him a pass on what happened and laid him out pretty good. It’s what I would expect out of good, impartial journalism.
As for the comment about new users and their perceived arrogance, it clearly works both ways when the first time a person comes on here they lay out a 1000 word fanpost telling us how stupid Joe Madden is, and how he NEEDS to be fired because he brought in Randy Choate to face a cleanup hitter with men on base. Every time I see someone mention this, I think to myself, “how nice are the people at ESPN if you go in there and say something someone doesn’t agree with? How about another popular SBN blog? The Heater? Something Awful? EBaums world? Usenet?” The fact is, the reaction is the same. If you go somewhere with an established community and spout your mouth off like an ignorant prick, nobody’s going to treat you nice. We have two new-user guides to tell people how not to be made a fool of. Anybody who is actually interested in learning from the site would read them and know not to do that kind of hostile stuff.

Judging by the divorce rates...
and the number of people who ARE on drugs, yeah, it probably IS hard to do. The man said he believes in Christ, he didn’t say he WAS Christ. He’s no better than anybody else, the only difference is he admitted/admits his sin and accepted forgiveness for it then repented from it. Everybody has something they struggle with (even you Sandy). What is a strong temptation for some has no pull with someone else. So before you look down on him, make sure you don’t have anything in your life you wouldn’t want caught on camera (not directed at you Sandy, just saying). Does that make it acceptable, NO, but he dealt with it long before he even had to. It’s not like he waited for the pictures to come out to tell his wife and organization. So please, call off the witch hunt and go home in peace. (And YES God DOES have a plan).

There is no witch hunt.
As for my life on film, that is irrelevant. I’m not making 9 figures as an entertainer. I’m not preaching to others how to live their life. I’m not laughing at him. I just see another example of wasted talent. It sickens me that some people can have everything handed to them their entire lives and not once genuinely appreciate it. This guy has ran the gambit between caviar and trash cans, you would think at some point he would just say enough is enough and find something else to do with his time. Whatever was working the previous 364 days should have worked that day. I have my own demons when it comes to alcohol, but I don’t have a family to be a role model for nor a sacred pact with a wife. I’m also not stupid enough to have my picture taken while doing something I wouldn’t want outside eyes to see. Glamor and fame are just as addictive as alcohol and cocaine, you can either stay out of the limelight and do what you want, or adjust your life to align with the enormous paychecks you receive.

I think the main reason people feel no sympathy for Josh Hamilton
besides his crack habits on the Rays’ dollar, is the fact that he gets unlimited chances and a gigantic salary playing a game we all love. Many people have to deal with the same shit he does, but since he can hit a baseball out of Yankee Stadium 25 times he can waste 8 years of his life and still be A-OK.

And I understand where you’re coming from, but I’m not saying that people MUST feel sympathy for the man just because I do, what I’m asking is why people on here are just outright GIDDY about this? What kind of man takes pleasure in another man’s failures? It would be one thing if Josh was on some arrogant, “F the world, I got money” crap, but he’s not. He’s ALWAYS said that he is a recovering addict and likely will be for the rest of his life. So why are people celebrating the fact that he stumbled? Because he used to play for us? So what? We’re WINNING and we’re one of the 5 best teams in baseball with more upside to come. At the end of the day, we DIDN’T get screwed. If Josh had gotten clean with us, we probably would have never been in a position to select an Evan Longoria or a Tim Beckham, so why are people still so angry with him. I really don't think the guys defending hamilton, GET why his situation is so offensive.
The same people that are outraged and offended by this post are the same people that still wear Hamilton jersey’s to rays games, a jersey he never wore, cheer for him on TV, and rage against the organization for releasing him.
These people are also the same people that boo at Dukes, teach their kids to yell “why don’t you just go back to jail”, and get physically angry when he comes up to bat at the trop.
What hamilton did to the fans of this team, is far worse then what Dukes did. Hamilton blew his potential, took millions from the team, and Dogged it in the minors when he was healthy. Yes he dogged it.
The south will never escape it’s racist past. Local sports fans areobviously playing favorites due to skin color, no matter if it is baseball or football. There was a recent poll in seattle regarding the top 5 fan favorites for players, and there was only one white guy, and he was #5. If this was Tampa, I guarantee that guy would have been #1, and Brett Boone and Randy Johnson would still be pined over by the local beat writers.

Correlation does not equal causation.
If you want to blame a dude for “dogging it” (let’s grant for the sake of argument that he was), then maybe Pat Burrell and BJ Upton should be in the Shithouse with Hamilton as well. Oh, but, they aren’t drug addicts, so by your logic, their on-the-field struggles shouldn’t have any connection with their private lives.
If you want to enjoy seeing him publicly ridiculed for losing his sobriety, and to call him a hypocrite because of it, the “dogging it” argument loses any relevance it might otherwise have. Because now you’re talking about a person’s private life, not how sexy (or unsexy) his stats were for your team.
Race has nothing at all to do with it. Maybe for some racists it may, but with sensible people, you can’t bring up race here because it has no relevance to them.
I don’t see much actual defending of Hamilton’s character going on. All people are saying is that it’s messed up to create a grotesque spectacle out of someone’s private issues. Also, if you want to go there, I fail to see how Dukes’ behavior was any better than Hamilton’s. He did psychologically torment someone by insinuating that he would murder her, after all.

I don't have the perspective. All it took for me to realize I was drinking like an alcoholic was a persistent case of acid reflux.
I can't wait until we trade him for a reliever.

Amazing, absolutely amazing how happy the author seems to be in
posting this news. I wonder if he were still a Ray if this post would have been written. I also wonder if the author is an expert or therapist on addictive personalities
And finally to basically vindicate Elijah Dukes and place him on a pedestal, i find disgusting.
I pray both these individuals can get their lives together with or without baseball.

Wow, so we realize he's not perfect
Are people gonna ever stop critisizing him? He got drunk once in a bar, so what. That happens to everyone. He’s still an amazing player, and i’ve heard he’s a great mentor around the clubhouse. I’d take him back in a heartbeat.
