Trade Idea for the Offseason
The Rays are running into the problem this offseason of an excess of (arguably) major-league caliber players. All the talk of Iwamura's option, our great infield depth (Brignac and Rodriguez), Desmond Jennings, and other such nonsense has the Rays in a unique position to perhaps deal some of its players/prospects. At the same time, we could still use a true 3+ WAR RF option, and I think I've found the perfect match: one of the league's most underrated players (and one of my favorite), Indians RF Shin-Soo Choo. This year he has been worth 4.3 WAR providing an excellent bat and league-average fielding. The Indians are undeniably rebuilding, and one of our pitching prospects (Wade Davis, Jeremy Hellickson, Jeff Niemann even, dare I say David Price?), Aki, and one of our position players/prospects may be enough to get the deal done. If we can deal CC for something big (a couple big time prospects, for example), we could seriously cut our payroll next year and provide a true Playoff-caliber team. I envision:
1B Pena
2B Zobrist/Aybar/Brignac
3B Longoria
SS Bartlett/Brignac
LF Deej
CF Beej
RF Choo Choo
C Hopefully somebody awesome and cheap we trade CC for
DH Pat Burrell I guess.
Imagine the haul we'll get for CC - we'll miss the defense, no doubt, but Deej figures to be a pretty good defensive LF and a great offensive LF, in the same vein of Carl. If we can net a ML ready catcher and a good SP prospect for Carl, I think we pull the trigger. We'll be looking at a great team next year and even without one of Davis, Hellickson, Price, and Niemann, I think our rotation and depth are pretty solid:
SP Shields
SP Garza
SP Price
SP Niemann
SP Hellickson
for example.
What are your thoughts?

Hm
I like choo but am I wrong, I thought he was worried about needing to serve his country. There is a 2 year manual service where he’s from. Maybe less. Im not entirely sure. Course I heard this during the WBC on espn so take from it what you will.

Matt Joyce should do fine.
What you think all the guns is for? All purpose war, got the Rottweilers by the door. And I feed 'em gunpowder, so they can devour the criminals, tryin' to drop my decimals.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking trade value is somehow really related to WAR. It isn't. Sure for some smarter teams, but many teams are way behind the curve
Choo would be extremely undervalued in the marketplace. Factor in the serve the country risk and he could be had for pretty cheap IMHO.
It is an option to explore if we deal CC. Choo in right and Joyce in left.
Can we get robots for umpires and a computer to make in game strategy decisions? I'm sick of inconsistently bad umpiring and Joe's pitiful in game management. Oh and Navi (and BJ) need some PED's. BenZo, Bartlett, and Pena do not.

Why would he be underrated?
He’s 27 and under team control until 2013.
He has career slash stats of .305/.396/.505 over the past two seasons (~1000 PAs). He also stole 19 bases this year with only being caught twice. He basically does everything well offensively.
You don’t need WAR to see that he’s a very good player. Why would a team undervalue him?

I like Choo alot
but what about a guy like Connor Jackson who may not have a contract tendered to him this off-season. The guy crushes lefties and could be rotated to give Joyce/CC/Pena days off vs. LHP and only cost money not a big time SP prospect.

I like his game, it's unfortunate that injuries have taken away from it.

and such a weird 'injury'
valley fever…. checking out the wiki page on this disease, there are no treatments available but if the kid is okay he seems to be perfect for this team with his LHP splits and positional flexibility

He's really a forgotten man over there.
Probably wouldn’t take much to wrest him away.

I don't ever want to see Aybar at 2B, ever.
Ever.

Roster I'd like to see
C Bengie Molina
1B Zobrist
2B Brignac
3B Longoria
SS Bartlett
LF Crawford
CF Jennings
RF Upton
DH Joyce (Rotating through the OF to give the other 3 a day off each week)
Bench
UT Rodriguez
C Zaun
OF Perez
SP’s
Shields
Garza
Davis
Niemann
Price or Hellickson (with the odd man out given a shot at being the Closer)
RP’s
Howell
Wheeler
Bradford (he’s had a bad year because of injuries, but he is normally pretty good)
Cormier
Try to unload Pena, Burrell, Navi and other contacts for 2 RP’s (1 a Lefty Specialist) and a Super Utility, or keep Aki for this role…then use the money from the guys traded to extend Crawford and Garza.
The moves would leave them with what should still be a solid lineup, plus provide financial flexibility at the trade deadline.
*But if they can’t get an everyday Catcher, I’d rather bring in Varitek than have Navi…for his leadership and power if nothing else, because he wouldn’t hit for average.
Production for Varitek vs Navi/Zaun (combined season total)
Varitek 356 AB’s 23 2B 14 HR 51 RBI
Navi/Zaun 617 AB’s 32 2B 15 HR 57 RBI
Even with Varitek’s low BA, his power numbers over 617 AB’s project to:
39 2B 24 HR 88 RBI
Not saying the Rays should pick him up, just comparing the numbers.

Overall ...
… it’s a good idea, but:
1. why not just try to trade CC for a young COF bat at least near the majors straight forward? … I suggest CC and Brignac to Seattle for Saunders, Moore, Morrow and Aumont!
2. the Indians don’t need Aki for just 1 year
3. Aki + a prospect + one of Helboy/Davis/Niemann/Price is too much for Choo (despite myself being a fan of Choo)
4. I wouldn’t trade any of our starting pitchers (who are at least) near the majors (which means Shields, Garza, Price, Niemann, Davis, Hellickson and Sonny) as this depth is definitely necessary for ’10!
What do u think?
