Into the Wall : Sarcasm for the Soccer Guy

so I missed the game watching my Wolfpack lay an egg on National TV
did Maddon screw the pooch again tonight or was this more of a team loss.
Way for you guys to make our conference look good on National TV
Maybe us and the Canes won’t have another 10-7 snoozefest on Monday night

the ACC is just a mediocre conference when it comes to football
VT is gonna lose this weekend and i think that either 1 or no ACC teams will be in the top 25 at the end of the season

If we lose to Miami I'll be so pissed
VT looks pretty fucked against Bama, but stranger shit has happened

no way this game is going to be 10-7 again
our D is way too young, and our offense is way too good. On a side note, at the 10-7 game I kissed a random girl in the student section who is now my fiance, after we blocked the FG attempt.

Season is over
but who cares, it was over a while ago. Jennings is unbelievable. I might be even more psyched for when he makes his debut than I was for Longo’s.
Hello.
any chance at all he gets a chance if Upton is going to miss some time???
I see no reason we can’t DFA one of the mediocre catchers wasting a 40 spot and give it to Deezy
Can we please get a post about why the 9th inning is no more important than the 6th-7th-8th or any time the starter leaves the game?
Yes, our starting pitching and defense are slightly worse, but the biggest difference between last year and this year is JP Howell is no longer used to pitch two-three innings after the starter leaves the game.
Glad we used our three best relievers in the must win game of the season.
it kind of makes you miss Percy
Maddon was better at matching the bullpen with an ‘established closer’, which he clearly favors, now with our best reliever being utilized only in the 9th recently (minus last night) it takes our best reliever out of the mix in what sometimes are the highest leverage situations.

Season over.
We’ll see ya in 2010, Rays. Great effort anyways.
yep
stick a fork in the 2009 Rays. Pitching/defense took a step back this year, but this year saw the emergence of Jason Bartlett, Ben Zobrist, and David Price.
so I'm glad Cormier was used
after we were down 3.
Seriously why does Maddon not use him in more important situations??? Isn’t it late enough in the season that we can give credit where credit is due? Cormier has been our 3rd best reliever all year behind Wheeler and Howell (could argue he’s been better than Wheeler). Important spot in the 7th and we go go Shouse/Bradford.
so the more I think about it
7-7 is impressive as hell, how many times has a player in the majors had 7 hits in a 9 inning game? I would imagine not many.
according to wikipedia it has only happened twice
Wilbert Robinson in 1892 and Rennie Stennett in 1975
so I'm starting to see the love in Desmond Jennings after tonight's 7-7
he has a line of .347 BA .443 OBP .545 SLG .977 OPS 18 BB 14 K 15 SB in 28 games
umm more SB than K’s, I’ll take it plus the .977 OPS is sexy. I know SSS but dayum.
The thought of a CC/BJ/DJ outfield makes me sexually aroused

Good season
It’s been a good season, if not what we hoped/expected. The team will be around 90 wins, some of the good fortune from last year was not present this year.
The team isn’t going to make the playoffs every year, even when we feel we might have the better team. Last year was a pleasant gift a year earlier than most thought it would get here.
This year kind of reminds me of the 2007 Tigers. They won 95 games in 2006, had several young pitchers who were extended beyond previous limits, then slipped back to 88 wins and no playoffs in 2007. I think the Rays are better positioned to stay competitive than the 2008 Tigers were, so the comparison kind of ends there.
But I just kind of look at this season as a consolidation year, and they’ll be ready to go up again next season.
Still stuff to enjoy this year, like how Davis does, maybe some AB’s for Joyce, savoring Carl’s possible last days as a Ray, watching Price hopefully develop more, Longo’s greatness, etc etc.
A couple hours later...yup, this still sucks

Welp
At least I got to see Mr. Carl Crawford as a Ray in person one last time. If the end is indeed near, thanks for being the hope of the future back when Greg Vaughn was listed as our “LF” to playing a lead role on the World Series team. Thanks for the excellent years on the Trop turf, whether September baseball meant avoiding 100 losses or playoff contention.

Your source for replacement level commentary
I really think they'll be able to keep Crawford
since they dumped Kaz’s contract, plus there is a lot of other money coming off the books too. I know we’ve had numerous posts and discussions about it, but I still believe the Rays have to keep on to Crawford not only as an excellent player, but as a valuable marketing tool too.
Unfortunately, the decision to sign him to an extension is not entirely theirs to make.
I have no doubt that the Rays FO would love to sign Crawford to an extension as long as the price is reasonable. However, I have a hard time believing that Crawford would sign long term here after his current contract expires. I say that not because he doesn’t like the team and the area, which I believe he does, but rather because of how often he mentions playing on turf being a detriment to his body. Pretty much any time he’s been hurt or needed rest the reasoning that he has given is that playing on turf is tough on his body. Given his age, his potential for prolonged productivity is quite high if he can stay healthy. I just think he’s going to look for an opportunity to play his home games on grass because he believes it will prolong his career. Purely speculation on my part, but it would seem to make sense.
Also, I hope I am wrong.
The next 29 games will speak volumes about the character
of this team. Will they show up or simply mail it in?
The clock starts now
What has happened to a once promising rotation?
Their performance these last four games simply won’t cut it. Who would have thought our most consistent SP would be Jeff Niemann?
It's still promising and good. You can't ignore workload factors over the past two years for Shields and Garza.
It’s almost surprising Garza has made it without injury – he took a leap in innings pitched last year at a young age. Shields pitched nearly 250 innings last year, and is on pace to pitch another 215. Even though he’s 26, that’s still a hell of a workload. It shows in his fastball.
Price is having growing pains – not surprising.
I'll buy into that somewhat simply because history proves you right
I am surprised Price isn’t further along though, and his lack of K’s is concerning
I thought he’d be the type that when he needed it could reach back and get that something extra for a much needed K
Thoughts on the Kazmir deal
I am in full support of it. As a markeying move it laid a huge egg, and the turnout for this BOS series proves that to be true
The average fan simply sees b & w, and is looking at this deal as a salary dump
I really don't think that has anything to do with it.
school started this week – not traditionally a week to go out at night.
plus, you know, the fact that officially unemployment is up above 11% in the bay area may have a slight bit to do with whether or not people want to pay extra to attend ‘premium’ games — TV ratings were up this week (at least Staats said something to that effect during the BOS series).
plus, y’ know, trading Kazmir wasn’t a ‘marketing move’ and probably shouldn’t be considered as such.
