Tampa Bay Rays Sign 16-Year-Old Left-Handed Pitcher Stepan Havlicek

Now official.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL-The Tampa Bay Rays have signed 16-year-old left-handed pitcher Stepan Havlicek (STEF-en HAVE-li-check), a member of the Czech Junior National Team, to a free agent minor league contract.  He was signed last week in Blansko, Czech Republic, by John Gilmore, the club's European and Australian scout.  Gilmore worked closely with Jiri Vit, an associate scout for the Rays in Czech Republic.

Havlicek is the first player signed by the Rays out of the Czech Republic, and is believed to be the first ever signed by the Rays out of Europe.

"Stepan has a loose, quick arm with good follow through," said Gilmore.  "His fastball has run and his curveball depth.  For a young player, he has great control and goes right after hitters."

A student of Sport Grammar School in the city of Brno, the 6'1", 160-pound Havlicek is a longtime member of the Czech Cadets and Junior National teams.  His most recent competition was at the 2009 European Juniors Championships held in August in Bonn, Germany, where he tallied 13 strikeouts over 11.1 scoreless innings.  He will likely attend a portion of the Rays extended spring training and play at Major League Baseball's Australia Academy this summer.

"This is a great opportunity for me to play against talented players," Havlicek said at his signing day press conference in Blansko.  "Everything will be new for me in the States and it will definitely be a great experience."

The signing is part of the Rays expanded international scouting efforts in Asia, Australia and Europe.

"Playing in the World Series has certainly made international players aware of the Rays," said Gilmore.  "But our track record in player development is our most powerful selling point to young players around the world."

I have little to nothing to add other than, woo young talent!

Banned for talking shit about me.

I know you did. Just look at those words. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I miss George Steinbrenner. He was the man responsible for keeping the Yankees competitive.

I know most of you are too young to remember

but there was a very good bball player from OSU and later the Celtics named John Havlicek

Wonder if it’s a relation?

I could be wrong

But isn’t he making close to minimum wage? $16K/year

by Doug09 on Jan 20, 2010 5:12 PM EST reply actions

Minimum wage in the Czech is 8,000 krona, or approximately $433/mo.

I was just over there in August

In Prague. Old city, definitely a favorable exchange rate. That’s actually not a bad idea, I mean the Yankees do it don’t they? A dollar’s worth less in NYC than it is here. Just shop at countries where the dollar’s not worth much. New market inefficiency?

by staplemaniac on Jan 20, 2010 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely not. Teams have been digging through countries with poorer economies for years; that's why MLB has so many players from countries like The Dominican Republic.

Also why trying to sign players from ‘D-Pub’ isn’t all that cheap anymore. It’s just finding new markets; the inefficiency’s always been there.

Looks like Jack Nicholson in that shot.

But Piazza was born and raised in the states. Is the list of famous European baseball players longer than the list of famous Jewish sports legends?

one less Star of David wearer since Sandy Kazmir retired

also I was just joking about the ‘Italian’ WBC team with the Piazza picture

I honestly thought that MLB was going to try to get Chef Boyardee to be a bench coach.

Looks like he meets the requirements

with his name ending in a vowel and all. The cast of Jersey Shore will probably be half the team next WBC.

Eh, there are some

Rick VandenHurk
Bert Blylevyn (though he moved to the US as a teenager, so he probably doesn’t count)

I thought Jurrjens was, but turns out he’s from Curacao.

I remember a few years back the Twins having some 7 foot tall Dutch prospect.

and on the 40-man!

Having van Mil and Jon Rauch in the same ‘pen for ST will be…interesting, I guess. I didn’t realize until now that the Twins have both the tallest player in pro history and the tallest player in MLB history on the same staff.

Europe in general is the new market

Unfortunately it’s really only the Netherlands and Italy that have anything resembling a baseball tradition. The Cubs have one Italian prospect, Alex Maestri, who played for Tennessee in 2009 (you may remember him from the WBC, the only native Italian pitcher with decent stuff they threw out there, no pun intended.)

The Twins recently signed another 16-year-old, from Germany, Max Kepler. He’s been pretty big in the latest prospect rankings.

eh, dont get your hopes up

Our country is way behind in terms of baseball talent, the conditions just arent there. I cant imagine this kid being more than taking a flier and more of a PR thing.
He is probably a non-prospect in terms of MLB.
Also Havlicek is a really common name here, so the relation to John Havlicek is very unlikely.
