Tampa Bay Rays Scout Rob Ducey Organizes Professional Free Agent Showcase
Ken Rosenthal passes this note along in his column a few days back:
Tampa Bay Rays scout Rob Ducey, a former major league outfielder, has organized a Professional Free Agent Showcase for Feb. 2-4 at Al Lang Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.
[...]
Free agents must have experience in the U.S. or international pro leagues in order to take part. That should make for a more select talent pool than normal tryout camps. And the timing allows plenty of time for teams to agree to terms with players and invite them to their spring camps.
Odds are the Rays hold some interest, if for no other reason than to have one of their own organizing the event in their backyard. How much is probably dependant on what players actually show up to this thing.

Every time I see the name "Rob Ducey"...
…I remember being a kid attending a Phillies/Blue Jays spring training game in 1989 and joining with hecklers sitting near me in the bleachers, chanting his name. “DU-CEY! DU-CEY!”
There’s absolutely no point to this comment but I had to get that out. I didn’t know Rob was working for the Rays up until I read a recent news piece by Joe Smith in the Times… And now this post.
To strive, to seek, to find, and to forever keep it Raw. Raw Charge.
I saw this and was slightly more intrigued:
The Pirates’ interest in Ankiel is "real," the second source said, but the team might fill its need with another player rather than continue waiting on Ankiel and his agent, Scott Boras.
Then I remembered:
“His return after seven years—if only three days long—is the stuff of legend. Made even more perfect by the timing: Just two days after Barry Bonds sets a synthetic home run record in San Francisco, the Natural returns to St. Louis.”
Then the ROFLTrain pulled out of the station since he was on the Mitchell Report.
And before anybody thinks about it, Ankiel’s play in the outfield and at the plate is about as consistent as his ability to throw strikes. The Rays don’t need him.
I miss George Steinbrenner. He was the man responsible for keeping the Yankees competitive.
I hope this guy shows up
