Verse Two: Ghostface Killer

Who's the Knucklehead, wantin respect?
Chop his fingers in the drug game, money well known
Lead singer, humdinger, flash is the aftermath
Here's his photograph
Run up in his lab, take off the mask Chaz and think fast
Don't laugh, bag the cash, grab the hash, don't forget his stash
Grab the tear gas, and place it in his face fast
The full blast

Further upstate, I heard they got crazy weight
Bagged up by the gates, in crates like disco breaks
Yo look out for Jakes, give it all it takes
Let's burn the place before we motivate
Yo Blake, niggaz don't fink, rape his mate
if the bitch scream, for God's sake, grab the grey tape
It's by the plate, with the blow crushed up with the flakes
Killer snakes, four bodies found floatin in lakes
Drug related, paper talkin bout the kids who didn't make it
Hits without a trace, never seen the Big C Rae and Ghostface
Congratulations Chef, let's celebrate and sip an eighth

Verse Three: U-God

The rap scar is on rap chrome
Put it on seal it on, we're silicone
Spark it on your Talkathon
This rap phenomenon, to word is bond to the arms
Hit me on the hip and horns, rap chaperone
Scars tone, bar clones, war tones, raw tones
Blowin out the door, bones but
Your rap's fraudulent, float in these rap quarter inches
Reinforced with suspense, be on your rap sword defense
These microphone professional, sensational
Fully operational, I got NIGGAZ here to play with you
You know the steez you know my whole program
Brothers from the No-Lands, all we want is the G's
guns and grams, livin fat like the Hoffa
Mafia, sippin eatin pastas
Layin in the house tellin the seeds about the sagas
Before we got Germanic and thoughts got sporadic
We grabbed golden tablets and quick guarded the Abbots
Slugs hit the belly put tones into the belly
Sucker tried to knock me out the box like skelly
I smoke the weed dreams I drop top two degrees
Honeydips spendin G's on nails and hair weave
The crime boss, takin no loss, excessive force
We can play the A-Train, back of the iron horse

I call it ... A Day in the Life of the Gris Gris Man

In an effort to get to know everyone here better, I thought I would more completely introduce myself with a little insight into my personal life. Most days start getting up just about sundown when the zombie girlz come in with my breakfast. Usually a light meal consisting of a glass of freshly squeezed mushroom juice with a nice hot plate of some fried buzzard eggs, over runny, and a couple of slices of smoked cottonmouth sausage, mmmmuhmmm. Then I crank up dat generator and get the old Direct TV going catch me a little news or read the obits in the paper. I love to watch those zombie girlz doing the dishes in their tight little moss mini skirts, oh yeah… you know what I’m talking about.

Then when it’s good and dark it’s time for some work, I’ll check the computer for any Saints newz and check the boards for any trolls that need some voodoo slapped on their crying and complaining azzes. (I swear I’m not talking about you Viking fans ; ) After my puter time and a good cup of joe, no really we dissolved down Joe Namath in some sulphuric acid, I can’t wait till tomorrow because he gets better tasting every day! Then me and a few of my zombie girlz jump into my black Z71 Suburban 4X4 hearse and go looking for some unsuspecting tourists lost in the swamp to play around with. Usually we just, after making sure they are not Saints fans of course, scare the crap out of them and maybe a little voodoo spell or two but we don’t kill ‘em hardly ever. Well that is unless we really like ‘em and want to make some new zombies out of them, but I have many mouths to feed now.

Well after a hard nights work messing with the tourists and any swamp Sasquatch’s we run into it is time for some real fun. We usually head up to the French Quarter and hang out at our favorite watering hole The Dungeon. It is usually rocking by 2 or 3am and time for us to get loaded with the gang, do some dancing, keep my eye out for any prospective new zombie girlz we might want to take back to the mausoleum for an ‘interview’. Basically, we just have a regular good old time in town, us zombies are just like everyone else you know.

After a hard night partying we head back down to Cocodrie where our cemetery is at, keeping our eyes out for any good road kill to pick up for supper. The zombie girlz make the best gumbo with dat stuff you ever did taste. I always stop by my favorite poison ivy patch to pick some nice fresh leaves to put into my mint tea or pick a bunch if we need to make another batch of my famous poison ivy wine…if ya aint tried dat you aint never died! When we get home, the grilz cook up whatever we having for supper and have ourselves a real feast, South Louisiana Zombie style.

Then me and the girlz all snuggle up in my swampwater bed and doze off listening to the sounds of lost souls and monkeys crying in the night…aint it great to be a zombie!

Foggy Bottom was a black neighborhood forty years ago, times change.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Oct 19, 2010 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I know, but Anacostia isn't steps away from the white house.

My Uncle had a rent controlled apartment in Foggy Bottom from like 1970 to 1985. In 1985 he was paying like $200 bucks a month to live next door to the Watergate.

by rglass44 on Oct 19, 2010 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Neither were Columbia Heights, Petworth, Mount Pleasant, Shaw, or any other number of neighborhoods that either have been gentrified or are being gentrified.

Anacostia is a really short commute from Capitol Hill, it’s on Metro, and it’s a really short distance from Nationals Park, Arena Stage, the DOT, and other new centers of activity in Southwest and the Capitol Riverfront area.

Land is at a premium in D.C., I don’t see any way that things south of the Anacostia become exempt from the trend. Especially since D.C. is encouraging it with the new streetcar line.

Though that story about a $200 apartment in Foggy Bottom is awesome.

by Andy Hellicksonstine on Oct 19, 2010 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I really think you're exaggerating.

I’ve been there twice, so obviously my word is not the gospel, but I don’t equate relative economic poverty with an inherently hopeless lack of safety. It’s obviously less safe than most of the rest of the city, but the gulf is not that wide.

The second weekend of school I volunteered down there to help clean up Oxon Run Park, and at least half a dozen people came up to our group and told us how genuinely grateful they were for our efforts. That community has its struggles, but it’s also fundamentally like any other. They want clean parks, good schools, and safe streets, and they appreciate any well-intentioned effort to help improve conditions in any of those areas.

My experiences with the area have been very positive. Now, I don’t venture there at night because the exceedingly small minority perpetuating crime poses a risk, but I found it to be a very close-knit, well-meaning community full of people trying to overcome circumstances that have been passed down to them from generations past.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Oct 19, 2010 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions

You're missing the point.

I plainly acknowledged that the area has a crime problem. There’s more to a community than that, however, and perpetuating the area’s self-segregation from the rest of the city is not helpful.

The recent mayoral election was not surprising in the least. It’s very clear why predominantly white areas went for Fenty by 3 or 4-to-1 margins, and largely black Wards went for Gray by the same ratio. The huge racial chasm exposed by a lack of dialogue and understanding between communities in D.C. is a disgrace, and the entire city can do better.

FWIW, I would’ve voted for Fenty. But I think Vince Gray means well, and I think he has the will and pedigree to unite the city. Let’s hope he makes progress in that regard without undoing Fenty’s best work.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Oct 19, 2010 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions

But why did blacks eschew Fenty?

Was it the improving schools or decreasing homicide rate? Or the fact that he brought in white women to head the schools and police department (two of the biggest employers of native DC African AMericans). It was cutting off the nose to spite the face because of perceived injustices.

by rglass44 on Oct 19, 2010 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Fenty did a lot of good things.

As I said, I would’ve voted for him. But look at it from the perspective of someone living south of the Anacostia.

For a lot of underprivileged, predominantly African-American people, D.C. has been their home for life. It has been home to their families for generations, and over the years they’ve been priced out of a lot of areas that are part of their heritage, as a result of gentrification.

Now look at Adrian Fenty’s tenure. What did he run on? Education reform was one element, and indisputable progress was made in some areas, but the pace has noticeably slowed up. In the process, a lot of black teachers and school officials. that were formerly the lynchpin of middle class communities were dismissed. Some, I’m sure, deserved it due to their ineffectiveness, but a lot of firings were very rash too. They were certainly not diplomatically handled.

What else did Fenty run on? Bike lanes? Good idea, but clearly something that appeals to and was largely put in place in predominantly white areas. Fenty also saw a lot of good development come to D.C. during his reign, but what did the people of Ward 8, for instance, get from it? An IHOP? That’s not helpful to their community.

The bottom line is that while so much of D.C. has seen marked improvement under Fenty, a lot of predominantly black areas have not shared in it appreciably. That’s not necessarily his fault, in some cases, but you can see the source of their frustration.

I think it’s a bit curt to suggest that Adrian Fenty lost because he hired an Asian schools chief and a white police chief. Bureaucratic positions in the Wilson Building and at DCPS are simply not an issue of consequence to most people. What does matter is how Fenty’s appointees represent the administration, and how the mayor represents himself.

That’s where they all failed. Fenty had an extraordinary opportunity to unite the city after winning every precinct in 2006, but he stopped reaching out to the black community in Southeast and Northwest, and he took them for granted. Most of the media attention for public school reform, and indeed a lot of the initiatives themselves, were focused on Northwest D.C., as opposed to the most needy areas of the city.

Fenty had his faults as public figure, and his cronies were definitely not helpful for his public image. But Ward 8 and other areas tolerated this type of stuff from Marion Barry because he brought them something in return. The number of residents in Anacostia that can credit their first jobs to him is probably very sizable. Fenty’s summer jobs program just doesn’t measure up in personal touch, among other issues with it.

The bottom line is that Fenty will go down as a good mayor. He did a lot of great things for the city, but he could have done more to reach out to the poorer sections of the city. More robust inclusionary zoning would’ve been a start.

In any case, you can’t say that the gains of 12 years under Fenty and Anthony Williams were spread equally. That’s what the election came down to, IMO. With economic pressures being higher than ever, the frustration with that just came to a head.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Oct 19, 2010 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

He's the first ever sitting Mayor not to be re-elected.

The city re-elected Maion Berry after a coke/prrostitution sting. It’s a joke. DC politics is a joke, and if you thhink that white city officicials laying off teachers wasn’t as big of an issue than merely laying them off I think you’re mistaken. He was crass and didn’t kiss ass. It bit him, and it bit him good. It also bit the city, though, and I’m sure Grey will do a great job of getting people in the SE’s lights back on because that’s all that matters here.

by rglass44 on Oct 19, 2010 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

That's not true at all.

The city’s first mayor was defeated by Marion Barry in 1978, and Sharon Pratt was defeated by Barry in 1994. Of D.C.’s five mayors, three have been not re-elected. The two above were defeated, and Barry was driven out by his arrest in 1990.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Oct 19, 2010 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Fenty too.

But he was colossally arrogant and didn’t “get” retail politics. It sure sounds good to be a crass, straight-talking, hard-charging politician, if you happen to agree with that person’s point of view. If you don’t, or are looking to be convinced, it doesn’t work so well.

Yeah, D.C. politics are dysfunctional, but that’s going to happen when you’re in a big city where the Feds stick their hands in local affairs routinely. When you have the diversity of D.C., things don’t function cleanly.

I scarcely believe there’s any City Council in the country that is like D.C.‘s, what with Mary Cheh’s environmental activism and Marion Barry’s outsized personality among 13 competing interests. But that’s what makes city politics so interesting, so unique, and so challenging for those that must wrangle with it.

Fenty was antagonistic towards the Council and large swaths of the city he was accountable to. Small wonder why he ran into problems.

I run right past that place. Too bad the playoffs nded so abruptly because I was going to have a playoff watching at my house (I was out of town for the first weekend games).

Things like “road diets”. When you have extra capacity, take 4 lanes and turn it into 2 lanes with bike lanes and bust turn outs.

Stuff like that.

The key in Tampa is making it safe for folks who want to actually go from point A to point B on bikes. I could care less about the recreational people who think it is fun to ride down Bayshore at 5PM in their damn spandex.

However, I started working at 14 and established an independence and self-reliance that some confuse with self-possession.

Bad public schools are a part of it.

Because of them, more and more middle class kids go to school with upper class kids. When the middle class kids see what their friends have and they want the same, a lot of parents feel it necessary to provide.

Mine didn’t, but more because my parents felt like I should work for my money to teach me self-reliance and responsibility. A lot of my friends, however, wound up with brand new cars for their birthdays, college paid for by daddy and mommy, and a huge wedding right after graduation to show off their success.

Don't take my generalization to be indicative of everyone, kudos to you

I think it’s a great point that you make and a trap that only gets worse as you go to college down there. I grew up in a rural town in upstate NY and also started working at 14 as both of my parents owned mildly successful businesses that could always use an extra set of hands. Moving to Orlando for college was an eye-opener for all those things that you mention. It’s sad that people play the keeping up with the Joneses game that I never really felt a part of and probably drove me to walk in the other direction. For the most part I take pride in keeping my bills low and living frugally and wish this ethic was instilled more across the board. Parents want the best for their kids and the commercialism that is rampant in Florida (and other areas) makes me sick to my stomach.

Hell yeah it is.

Right now the only pedestrian friendly greenway in this area I can think of is the Pinellas Trail.

And this year, despite injuries and a brief slump, Lee walked 18 batters in 212 innings. Eighteen batters. He doesn’t give up home runs. He throws complete games. His 10.28 strikeout-to-walk ratio is the best ever for a pitcher who has thrown 200 innings. Best. Ever.

How did I miss this?

JoePawned!
Lee threw a fastball on the outside corner for called strike one.

Yes, some of the Yankees crowd had gone home. They had come to the ballgame for a party; they did not need to see any more of this Cliff Lee making a shambles of this three-quarter-of-a-billion-dollar lineup. It is hard to appreciate artistry when it is done at your team’s expense, in your ballpark, in your city …

Hmm, yeah, that's an issue.

There are probably ways around it, but I’m not sure off the top of my head. Don’t know where you work, but this is a pretty nifty thing.

Yes it is.

The main option is to join the overpriced gym at my work (which would be cheaper than the $80 bucks a week spent on the metro, barely). That loses some of the financial gains of buying an outrageously xpensive bike.

Nah dog.

I don’t even own a helmt. How much is it?

by rglass44 on Oct 19, 2010 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Annual membership is $50, at least as an introductory rate.

Rentals are free for the first half-hour. There’s a charge after that, but it’s intended to be a mode of commuter transit, so I suspect you can get most places in the city within the free window.

I haven’t tried it yet, but since I didn’t bring my bike up from Florida, I’m definitely considering using it. There’s a station right around the block from where I am.

by Patrick L. Kennedy on Oct 19, 2010 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh wow.

That is good. It would also be a nice way to try it out to see if it would work.

by rglass44 on Oct 19, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It should get even more useful as they put more stations in.

There’s already a lot of them in-town and in Arlington. But I have to take advantage of the Adrian Fenty Memorial Bike Lanes somehow.

Anything for the sake of profits

I stayed at the Westin Imagine in Orlando for the last few nights. Paid my bill via credit card like I would any other. Just saw on my card website that they authorized to charges of $959 the night that I got there and the day that I checked out. I believe this is in addition to the $800 for the room rent, but I can’t tell as they are pending charges. So after I call to figure out why my credit card is almost maxed out for pending charges that I’m assuming were fraudulent activity they tell me that they were to hold the room and the dumbass bitch peon that I talked to has no idea why there would be two of those charges. Bullshit, it’s so that they can deposit the money in their account and collect whatever interest they can get for before they bill back that there are no charges. What a fucking scam. Meanwhile, if I wanted to use my card for something, I have virtually no room left on it. Fuck the Westin Imagine, don’t stay there or any other Starwood Hotels. Fucking Orlando and fucking corporations can eat my entire dick. All of it. Take your fucking cheated interest you blood suckers. If you can’t tell, the writing is on the wall that this economy is about to have the life support removed.

Hell yeah it is.
