OTTOTD: PBrady, can u make yr fantasy basketball team less terrible?
you are killing the credibility of the 69's division, son.
on the other hand, yr football team has made you a man in my eyes. [unless bruce baywood can get 24 points out of santana moss tonight]
and when it comes to whether someone has yet reached man/womanhood, i am an expert. i have probably spent 2500+ hours on the subject. if there is ever a doctorate on the subject, i should be contacted to write up the final examination.

Any amount of points can be scored week to week. well, besides 1 point. Any number is as likely to be reached as another, since there’s only one of each number, each has the same chance to be hit. IT’s how the syetemof averages works.

He’s a great rebounder and outlet passer. Imagine him in Golden State or something tossing outlets to Curry or Ellis.

wesley johnson has a nice 3-stroke. that team just needs Ricky Rubio in the worst way. can’t believe the owners just didn’t throw a harem of 89 spanish-speaking virgins at him, and an escalade limo to cart them around in. would’ve done the trick.

I expected 5-11 going in to the year.
Granted I don’t follow teh NFL outside of my fantasy teams, so it meant little. It is fun ti cheer for them, though. The thing that turned me off from the NFL (apart from the utter unwatchability) was the Bucs focus on old FAs after the SB year.
Freeman is carrying this team on his back
Doesn’t help that we have two legit WR’s and a legit RB now.

Jersey gave back money, but it wasn't for HSR.
Chris Christie cancelled plans for a second trans-Hudson tunnel to carry commuter trains into Manhattan. Amounts to something like a $3 billion federal investment that the state forfeited there.

I don't think that they've forfeited their money.
But Ohio Governor Ted Strickland was defeated for re-election, and he was a big booster of a statewide rail network. His victorious opponent is pretty much guaranteed to kill that.
Wisconsin still has some hope of retaining their money, but Jim Doyle has suspended work on HSR for the time being since the incoming governor has expressed reservations about the project. It’s likely to receive a long look and be delayed, if not outright cancelled.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on Nov 15, 2010 2:54 PM EST up reply actions
They have to use it for HSR, or it's forfeit.
www.dhazebay.com
by putupyourDUKES on Nov 15, 2010 2:56 PM EST up reply actions
Yes.
The size of federal investment in those two states is not nearly the level that it is in Florida, but it is for an explicit purpose. I think HSR is effectively dead in Ohio and uncertain, at best, in Wisconsin.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on Nov 15, 2010 2:59 PM EST up reply actions
It makes the most sense here, IMO.
Not only do we lack other sufficient public transportation but we rely on tourism more than most. TGN1 says it best that HSR is for tourists. Also, it would be nice to be able to get out of the area is a major hurricane were coming via train instead of waiting 6 hours on I-4.
Oh yeah, and this state was founded on rail.

I don't necessarily like the fact that HSR in Florida goes through the middle of nowhere.
But given the infrastructure costs for building a truly high-speed line, and the fact that it’s better than nothing, I’ll take it. Best-case scenario is that it forces improvements in local mass transit along the way.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on Nov 15, 2010 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

Now being whenever it's built, if it's built.
We’re getting 1 stop in the Lakeland area, and it’s a huge debate as to where it will be.
Some want it near the USF Polytechnic campus, some want it elsewhere.
They need to make a wise decision on station placement there.
They can either put it at Kathleen Road and try and integrate development into the urban fabric, or they can put it at the Polk Parkway and perpetuate more auto-dependent sprawl. I hope they choose the more urban location.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on Nov 15, 2010 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

It makes some sense, yeah.
But I think Florida’s future needs to be more about redevelopment and less about the ‘building out’ pattern that typifies every urban area in the state. I think HSR would function best in an established urban community that would be a better fit for the type of redevelopment I would have in mind.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on Nov 15, 2010 3:17 PM EST up reply actions

mil to madison is unnecessary, especially for a low tourism state. you have to convince hardline conservatives up there. if there’s a shred of doubt, they will swat new taxes down instantly.

Wisconsin is, on the whole, a pretty progressive state and it has a long and mostly uninterrupted reputation of being such.
Again, I think a lot of the beauty of a Milwaukee-Madison HSR line is in its potential. You mention the short distance between the two cities, but I think that only enhances the corridor’s potential as a compact area in which development can take place. A short distance also holds down total costs, which at least at the start of things, is no small deal.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on Nov 15, 2010 3:34 PM EST up reply actions
But if no one actually uses the rail, how can you say there is development potential?

The Milwaukee MSA and the Milwaukee-Madison corridor does not at all suffer from the effects of traffic congestion and outrageous sprawl, like Tampa.
The area certainly has its problems, but infrastructure is probably pretty low on the list.

That may be true.
But there is virtue in getting ahead of the eight ball on matters like that. What’s more, while infrastructure may not be a problem, it certainly is not an asset right now as it could be. It could be an asset that pays dividends much greater than any road project ever could.

The working age cohort in the Milwaukee MSA is not projected to grow in pop or households over the next five years.

I'll just say that a lot of growth can be induced through the right mix of policies.
Some of which you alluded to beyond HSR. But stagnation in growth would clearly be a signal to be that it’s time to try a different, distinctive approach.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on Nov 15, 2010 3:48 PM EST up reply actions
Same with Tampa, however, this area has an immediate need for HSR.
Milwaukee doesn’t and that’s why it failed. Foresight isn’t a prevalent attribute these days.

Induced demand.
You create the conditions for your success through complementary policy choices. Building HSR in tandem with other pro-sprawl policies does not have a great effect, but when public policy is done in concert with an overall goal in mind, it can be successful.

There's a line from Chicago to St. Louis in the works, one that is actually pretty far along.
And long-term visions exist for an integrated regional network. If you get the Chicago-St. Louis and Milwaukee-Madison legs up and running, it’s only a matter of time before the short Milwaukee-Chicago leg gets filled in, and from there they can go forth to MSP.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on Nov 15, 2010 3:18 PM EST up reply actions
That's the thought.
A Madison-Milwaukee line would work well in itself, since it would develop an urban corridor to channel economic growth along its path. Combine that with links to Chicago and MSP, and the whole region is linked up.

You can't think in terms of state, but regionally
you lose a state in the same region, the entire HSR line gets fucked.

It's the development opportunities to me, moreso than a marginal instance of commuter convenience.
If HSR brings Brookfield into line with a more densely-populated corridor, I say that putting a station there is completely worth it. You can’t have a stop in every city along the route, but being one of the bigger Milwaukee suburbs, Brookfield is probably not a bad target.

I don't see how that's possible.
If anything, the train only deepens the economic linkage between the two cities. I don’t know Wisconsin commuting patterns, but I would think anything that enhances mobility and makes easier a car-free lifestyle boosts the economic attractiveness of the whole corridor by deepening the labor pool.

its an uneducated labor force suffering from brain drain to begin with.
(14% of people aged 25+ with bach degrees in milwaukee county) and people already commute to madison for work. everyone living in brookfield pretty much works dt. the interstate system up there is well done, especially after the marquette interchange was finished. it takes no time to drive.

What is going to attract high-skilled workers and high-wage jobs to Wisconsin?
Or anywhere, for that matter? The state is not going to live up to its potential as long as Madison and Milwaukee exist in separate spheres, disconnected as they are. There is no reason that with the short distance separating them that they cannot be more cohesive and interconnected. I would argue that they need to be to utilize the benefits of each area and compete in the international, much less national and regional economy.

No, they're not.
But combined with other difficulties the region faces, the bottom line is that they’re not choosing Wisconsin as much as would be healthy for the state, and that’s a problem.
It seems to me that, in seeing that, you’d want to create for yourself a distinctive asset that improves quality of life and makes you stand out for companies seeking to relocate. HSR is exactly that.
by Patrick L. Kennedy on Nov 15, 2010 3:42 PM EST up reply actions
What is the problem?
I think one of the issues is that Milwaukee County forces its homegrown talent away from the area due to high taxes and forcing enthusiastic public service workers (teachers, city engineers, fire fighters, whoever) to live in the city, with its low volume of affordable, quality housing, barriers to entry for new developments, and high taxes.
Otherwise, if you’re going to expand into that area, why not Chicago, which is nearby with a larger and more educated workforce? What’s the compelling reason not to choose Chicago? I don’t think the L is making that difference.

Absolutely, there are other issues beyond HSR.
It’s not a silver bullet, and I can’t speak for sure on the other social problems facing the state. What I can say is that while Chicago always will be the big, regional anchor, Milwaukee-Madison can absolutely be a complementary player and a tremendously successful one at that. It serves its own niche, and in my view, HSR is a great way to help build upon that.

If the fed money was going to a Chicago to Milwaukee segment, I think everyone up there would be in agreement for its usefulness.
Chicago workers already commute from Milwaukee. There’s a built-in tourism exchange and sports rivalries. Also, Milwaukee and its sub/exurbs are parasites on the Chicago culture scene. I’ve driven to Chicago for concerts, plays, etc. Milwaukee to Madison is just profligate. Until certain other state level development inhibitors are addressed, there’s no reason to believe that demand will be induced for the rail, not with the low volume of traffic on 94.

Coupled with the Blount and possibly Al Woods signings and its been a phenomenal offseason for Morris and Dominik. Is it okay to say that now? Is it unbelievably odd to have so many personnel decisions work out compared to the last few years of the Gruden/Allen era?

We don’t have to compete with Denver, Atlanta, et. al. Our locale (warm, sunshiny winters) means we will always get a Superbowl and other little goodies. At our previous Superbowls, nobody was asking where our light rail or high speed rail was. Tampa will ALWAYS be on the regular rotating list for Superbowls. Those other cities will not. Ironman will be back here after a couple dozen people experience dehydration in the desert. We don’t need light or high speed rail to attract events, tourism, conventions, businesses, etc. etc. Fix the roads and everything will be just fine.

What does "fix the roads" mean? I keep hearing that thrown around, but its not like there's anywhere to build new roads or expand the ones that exist. The width is pretty fucking maxed out.
