Congrats to David Price for finishing so high in the voting. It was debatable whether Price or C.C. Sabathia would place higher, with most people assuming that Sabathia would challenge Felix Hernandez for the award, but that apparently wasn't the case.

When you dig into the numbers, both Sabathia and Price had similar cases. Sabathia pitched 30 more innings, but Price had a higher strikeout rate. Sabathia had a lower xFIP and a higher WAR, but Price had a better ERA and FIP. It could have gone either way, but I'm personally really glad for Price. Hopefully this is just the first of many times that Price is in contention for the Cy.

Rafael Soriano placed eighth in the voting, getting five points (one 4th place vote, three 5th place votes).

Oh, and kudos to the Baseball Writers for giving Felix Hernandez the Cy Young despite only getting 13 wins this year. He deserves it.

This definitely surprised me

I thought that CC had it in the bag but boy was I wrong. The fact that they didn’t even vote him 2nd is surprising as well. I am happy for David though.

Congrats to King Felix, he did deserve it.

Some applause for the BBWAA

Felix was the best pitcher IMO.

Would have liked to see stronger showings for Lee, Liriano, and Weaver, but the entire debate being framed as CC vs Felix (with Price thrown in on occasion) probably hurt their chances. Glad voters realized that Lester > Buchholz despite the ERA.

Looks like only 27 of the 28 voters voted for Price at all....

Whoever that 1 writer is that did not have David Price in the top 5 of the AL CY Young ballot, needs to have his voting rights revoked immediately.

That is insane.

It was Mike Silverman of Boston Herald...

And I think his is pretty defensible, and I’m glad he included Lee, Lester, and Weaver on his ballot, three pitchers who I think didn’t fare as well as they should have.

Here’s his explanation: http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/red_sox/

Congrats to Price

and to everyone in the pre-season prediction thread that had him finishing top 3/5 in CY Young voting.

I'm just glad the BBWAA website no longer has that hideous neon green background

could not find it - what was Felix' team W-L

I think the team record in games started is more relevant to the W-L, which certainly has nothing to say about Hernandez’ pitching. I’m just interested in looking at the difference between that win % and the teams (.377).

here
Hernandez had a league-best 2.27 ERA amongst American League pitchers when facing teams with a winning record. Compare that with Jon Lester, who is also in the discussion for the award, who had an ERA of 3.04 against similar teams. The story gets even more interesting when you look at how Sabathia and Price did against similar competition.

Price had 19 starts against teams with a winning percentage greater than .500 and went 11-5 in those contests with a 2.68 ERA. Meanwhile, Sabathia pitched in just 15 games against teams with a winning record and went 7-3 with a 3.74 ERA in those contests. Sabathia padded his 21 win total with 14 wins against teams with records below .500 and ten of those came against the Orioles, Mariners, and Royals.
