Rays Rosterbation, Holiday Edition

I'll admit it, one reason the Rays are so fun to follow is that there are so many creative roster-building possibilities.  And there's a surprisingly good chance a wacky idea matches one in Andrew Friedman's brain.  Erik said said there wasn't a good spot to throw random thoughts, so let's call it open season on creative ideas.  Here are some Garza trade proposals to kick things off.

  • Garza for Prince Fielder, with Milwaukee eating most or all of Fielder's salary.  That would be 4-5 WAR for zero money, plus around $5M in compensation picks, giving up, say, 7-10 WAR at $20-$25M.
  • Garza for Billy Butler.  Similar talent levels, similar contract status.  Not sure if the Royals want a guy like Garza, but I'm not sure they love Butler, either, and if they trade Greinke, pitching might be in their sights.  (This idea via Jason Collette.)
  • Garza to Cubs for package including CF Brett Jackson.  There's not much else in that farm system -- the Vitters Unknown and a lot of C level pitching prospects -- but Jackson's shown at age 21 in A+ and AA that he can hit and take a walk from the central outfield position.
As Jonah pointed out on the radio yesterday, the Rays have a couple choices with a Garza deal -- replenish the prospects or acquire a player who's more win-now.  Given the hoarding of picks for the 2011 draft, I favor the latter option, or at least focusing on prospects who are almost MLB-ready.

I’m all for Rec’ing this up and making it our go-to thread for the next couple weeks. Thanks Sky!

I have been thinking about the Fielder deal also.

I would love to find a way to include Manny Parra in the deal, a lefty who did well in relief and strikes out lots of batters.

My other notion, if the Rays fail to close the Jenks deal, is to sign Balfour to a 1 year deal (say at $4 million) with a mutual option for $6 million or some sort of buyout and make him the closer. For the Rays, assuming they believe Balfour can succeed in that role, they get a closer at below market price with a chance to hold onto him for another year at a decent cost if he does well. For Balfour, it provides him an opportunity to build his closer creds in case he wants to sell his services the following year.

As a couple people have noted, E5 is now gone...signed by the Blue Jays.

So there’s another off our wish list.

Butler would be fantastic, but I'm not sure they're inclined to move him

The have Hosmer in the pipes to take over 1B in 2012 or so, but they’d still love Butler as a DH I assume. Unless Kila Ka-aihue has some sort of breakout year or they determine Mike Moustakas has to move to 1B, I don’t see them shopping Butler. If they do, it will probably be when he’s starting to creep up in cost in arbitration

Butler's probably a better player going forward than Garza, plus safer.

Don’t love the glove, but tough to worry about that when the total package is more than fine.

Oh, and even if Kila broke out

They’ve shown a history of not really liking him so I’d bet he’d be the one they’d shop, not Butler

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE ME SOME KILA MONSTER

Hell yeah it is.
Any amount of points can be scored week to week. well, besides 1 point. Any number is as likely to be reached as another, since there’s only one of each number, each has the same chance to be hit. IT’s how the syetemof averages works.

If we could get him for cheap

I wouldn’t maind Kila Monster as a target. I’d love to see what he can do with sustained MLB at-bats.

The Garza for Fielder idea strikes me as really cool.

It’d be quite a shocker, and would immediately get the Rays back up nationally in the convo for the division. And if things don’t work out, you could flip him at the deadline for prospects, or hold onto him for the picks.

I love Casey Fossum. Now try and take me seriously.

by Steve Slowinski on Dec 16, 2010 12:09 PM EST reply actions

Of course, that depends on what sort of prospect packages we're getting offered right now.

If the Rays aren’t getting high offers anyway, then yeah, go this route. But if they can fleece someone for a large haul of prospects, I’m wondering if that might be the smarter route…no short term gain, but better long-term stability.

I love Casey Fossum. Now try and take me seriously.

2 trade ideas

Trade BJ Upton to the Angels for 1B Trumbo and RP/CL Walden which gives us a hard throwing right handed power bullpen arm and a right handed power hitting 1B/DH guy.
Both are cost controlled and Trumbo is blocked right now but ready and the Angels have lots of bullpen. They get the speed outfielder that they have been searching for. If Jennings is not ready at the start we have S Rod and L Anderson that can patrol center and can combo them with Zorilla and Joyce.
2nd Trade Garza to the Nats for Espinona, Ramos and Storen and maybe a throw in from us to also get Marrero included as well. This gives them the top starter they want and we get a switch hitting 2B/SS, a Closer candidate for the pen and a right handed catcher so we can get rid of Shopp. All are cost controlled and give us great left/right and position flexibility. The only other need would be a Marcus Thames type for a right handed DH. We trade 2 and get 5-6 players back and look at the position flex:
1B: Trumbo/D. Johnson/Zorilla, 2B: Espinona/S Rod/Zorilla/E. Johnson SS: Briggy/Espinona/E. Johnson 3B: Longo C: Jaso/Ramos LF: Joyce/L. Anderson/S Rod/Zorilla CF: L. Anderson/S Rod/Jennings when ready RF: Zorilla/ Joyce/S Rod DH: Thames/D. Johnson

Cain, Gamel, Jeffries plus two lower level prospects and he’s yours

Now that Cain, Jeffres, Alcides, and Odorizzi are gone

there really isn’t much left. Cody Scarpetta is cool I guess. That system is completely barren (still not White Sox bad), and I doubt they trade Fielder for even more pitching now. Fun while the dreams lasted?

More importantly

Now that they have Grienke, they don’t need Garza

WE SAY MERRY CHRISTMAS ROUND THESE PARTS

I would have liked Garza for Willingham/Norris, but that seems next to impossible now. I’d still like to see something like Garza for Lucroy/Gamel/McClendon and would be willing to throw a Colome/Cruz in as well.

They need a 2B.

Obviously if they didn’t want him they wouldn’t trade for him, but it seemingly made sense. Garza for Norris would be fine by me by it’s self, and I don’t think there’s anyway you could get both for just Garza.

What is Butler's Contract status

in terms of years left and money? If he had multiple years left, then I would definetly try for him in a deal with Garza. Put him at either 1st or DH.

12/8/10- The day Urban Meyer resigned as coach and the day Crawford signed with the Suxs. One of the worst days in sports ever!

by thedudeofdudes on Dec 19, 2010 12:13 AM EST reply actions

I doubt Butler gets moved

I’d rather target Kila or Gordon, frankly. Both are probably much cheaper to obtain and seem like high probability outcomes to me. Kila has a history of taking a half season to adjust to a new level, and the Royals just haven’t given it to him. Gordon strikes me as a player who might be able to thrive if he gets a low-pressure change of scenery.

Plus

With Hosmer on the way and the focus obviously shifted to the future, those are guys we’d be able to get with pieces the Royals would be interested in (e.g., our pitching prospect depth).

As long as there’s a good amount more to the deal I’d be pretty thrilled to have him.

Maybe for once we can offer more money than the competition?
