Adrian Gonzalez to Red Sox, aka Rays season OVER
It seems as if the Boston Red Sox have traded for first baseman Adrian Gonzalez from the Padres for a slew of prospects. What does this mean to us Rays fans? Let's think about it. The Rays are the defending ALE champions, and in fact have won the division two of the last three seasons, despite the signings of top free agents by the Red Sox and Yankees. We have seen the Red Sox sign/trade for the likes of , Mike Cameron, John Lackey, Adrian Beltre, JD Drew, Marco Scutaro, Billy Wagner and Victor Martinez. The Yankees have brought aboard Mark Texiera, AJ Burnett, CC Sabathia, Curtis Granderson, Lance Berkman, Nick Johnson, Javier Vasquez and Kerry Wood, while holding on to their own free agents.
Many here on DRB are dismayed by this Gonzalez news, where i look at it as off season business as usual for the Yankees and Red Sox. As many of you have seen, the off season me, is one of calm and optimism, the in game person becomes very reactionary. So i'll close with the words 'In Andrew, we trust'

Would you like it more if Beltre had performed at his career average last year instead of a similar season to the last time he was in a walk year?
Hell yeah it is.
Any amount of points can be scored week to week. well, besides 1 point. Any number is as likely to be reached as another, since there’s only one of each number, each has the same chance to be hit. IT’s how the syetemof averages works.

So it didn't happen?
Now if either team signs Lee, Soriano and Wood, i’ll be impressed

No, I'm implying that don't expect him to do what he did next year, which is what they are doing
2011 Beltre + 2011 Youkilis < 2011 Youkilis + 2011 Gonzalez
I don’t think the 5-10 runs that Beltre’s defense brings makes up for the regression he will be seeing to his offense.

I remember they said that about Pat Burrell, too.
He too could easily end up hitting .220 and watch his power evaporate overnight.

hey, no one ever has trouble coming from the NL to teh ALE.
Listen up, doc, your rhyme's worth piss in the pot. You be pickin' the lock, when will it stop? You can never get to the top. Wack emcees make me laugh like my ticklish spot.
Even with all the injuries, the Red Sox never had a problem scoring runs

If theo had traded Beltre and Victor to the Pads for Gonzalez
would DRB still be saying what great addition he is?
Because in essence they did just that

the loss of Martinez's bat will hurt
A-Gon is pretty damn good though. And a Youk-AGon-Ortiz is a pretty awesome middle. Especially if Ellsbury and Pedroia are healthy.
This is why I’m glad we have great starting pitching.
Maybe now, since the Padres are in such a giving mood, they’ll give us Bell.

I can't wait for this season to see our SP
Price (serious Cy Young), Davis (2nd full season, got better as the season went on. Look at Price’s second season compared to his first.), Niemann (mr. consistency), Hellickson (top 2 pitching prospect in baseball), Shields (regression? Hittability? At least it’ll be interesting), Garza (obviously has no-hitter stuff)
We’re not losing Price or Helly, regardless of which of the other SPs we move, there are going to be a lot of reasons to be excited about our pitching staff this season.

I think some of the hysteria people exhibit
when Boston or NY make deals like this is kind of the reverse image of their reaction when the Rays lose stars like Crawford, Soriano et al. There is an assumption built into those reactions that each star added equals 10 or 20+ wins or a team loses that when a star leaves. That is not the way baseball works. If it did, when the Yankees added Sabathia, Teixeira and Burnett, they should have won 140 or so games. Certainly it is a good deal for Boston, but as pointed out, essentially Gonzalez replaces Victor Martinez and Beltre, so how much value has been added to last year’s offense and defense?
Naturally, the returns of Pedroia and Youklis are significant gains for Boston. It is a terrific team regardless as are the Yankees. But the situation for the Rays is not really different from what it has been for the last 3 years.

I can only hope that this is the year that the age of the players and the relative injury luck finally catches up to the Yankees
The caller said the boy, after removing the bulb from its socket, left the building and threw the bulb on the ground. When the bulb broke, the caller said the boy screamed "To be the best, you have to beat the best…"
It does when they have to match up v athletic teams Rangers and Rays

That's why they signed Private Pyle last year, let him soak up all the injuries, team-wide.

I honestly don't see where we're any worse off without Crawford, Peña, or even Garza
We have replacements for them all in our system that have already proven themselves.
The bad part about spending as much money as the Yankees and Red Sox is, if players go down, that’s an awful lot of money you just flushed down the toilet. (pun intended in the Yankees’ case)

It's a bit naive to think that we have any player who can replicate Crawford's production
Yes, possibly defensively Jennings is that good, but not close yet offensively. So we get that production from other places right? Yes, I think it can be overcome, but taking a 5 WAR player off of a team with the dynamic skill set Craw has could potentially neuter the offense. I think some positive regression/improvements from young players will help offset his loss, but him leaving is by far the most painful.
