This Post is Somewhat Insulting to Jeff Bennett
It's the first day of February. In 18 days, pitchers and catchers will report. Truth be told, most of my time has been spent working on the DRB Annual (see a preview of the design here) and I didn't have the chance to write a thorough post for today. Instead, I'd like to offer a discussion question, although if you guys just use this as an open thread, I'll understand that too.
Lately I've spent a lot of time thinking about the hedonic value of attending games and of certain victories. A win against the Orioles means less to us than a win against the Red Sox. Why? Well, it's obvious. But I want to take it a step further eventually, and for today I'm going to take it a half a step further by posing a "would you rather ..." question. So let's get to it:
Do you prefer your wins to be decided in:
A) Late, thrilling fashion
B) Early, blowout fashion
Similarly, or perhaps in stark contrast, when your team must lose, do you prefer the defeats to be decided in:
A) Late, thrilling fashion
B) Early, blowout fashion
Included is a picture of Jeff Bennett. Because.

My answers
I’d want to win in A) Late, thrilling fashion
And B) Early, blowout fashion
Now if you were to ask me if I would want a win/lose to be decided prior to knowing the outcome, I’d say early on both accounts.
Late, thrilling fashion for wins unless we play BOS or NYY because I love to see the wave of their fans leaving in the 7th inning like the poor sports they are.
For a loss I would pick Late because the game is more interesting
Answers are different when attending games
Blowout wins are more fun when in the Trop than when watching games on t.v. or computer, while late wins are great either way. As for losses, competitive games are imperative while attending, while on tv it`s easier to take the approach of " a loss is a loss".

I choose... I choose...
BOTH!
I prefer late, thrilling unless it’s a monumentous home game. In that scenario, blowouts can be even better. Home, playoff blowouts are amazing.
For wins, I think I like the late, thrilling victories. Gets the adrenaline going
The blowout wins are nice, but I tend to tune out after the 5th inning or so.
With losses, I’d prefer to know the outcome early on. Nothing like getting your heart ripped out late in a game.

I'll settle for any game action right now
As a fan of the fringy players, I look forward to the occasional blowout. Think The Mighty Thayer at the Bat. Obviously the close games are fantastic. I just want my baseball back.

Knappy Headed Hos.
I miss George Steinbrenner. He was the man responsible for keeping the Yankees competitive.

In general, I like...
Wins: B
Losses: B
The former is just fun to watch (Pena crushing a 2R HR when we already lead by 9), while the latter prepares me for the disappointment and reduces the subsequent mini-depression. Also, I like — as FreeBRZ noted — when funny circumstances arise, a la Josh Wilson pitching.

I'm all for the close games, regardless of if we win or not

Sure, losing close games stinks, but winning close games is incredible. I see the strength of the emotion being about the same, just being in opposite directions, so I say bring on the strong emotions.
I’m not sure if I think the chart above is perfect, so feel free to make your own. I have a feeling everyone’s chart will look slightly different, but who knows.

....yeah, something like that
I don’t know why, but the idea popping into my head when trying to answer RJ’s questions. I’m a visual person, I guess; it helps me organize my thoughts a bit.

Doesn't matter really for me.
Blow out wins or loss becomes just fun conversations at the games while I move on to a game or something else when on T.V.
Close games are fun to watch even if we lose it’s entertaining baseball.

Me: Gabe Gross signed with the A's? Oh I should go look at Athletics Nation, I bet they've got some good opinions.

AN has went to hell in the last year.
I’ll wait on a SBN email telling me I can’t have an opinion on another SBN site that isn’t positive.

I always prefer close games
More excitement = better, regardless of outcome.
Blowouts are fun when position players pitch though. Nick Swisher K’ing Kapler was fabulous entertainment.
Man I got all kinds of pissed about that. Kapler was slumping huge too when that happened. I thought he was worthless. Glad he broke out of it though.

P.S. I think you've been hanging out with Carson a little too much, R.J.
But way to whip out the fancy terminology like “hedonic value”

Warning: Slightly off topic
Am I the only one who gets SO excited when I start seeing the baseball preview magazines (Athlon, Lindy’s, etc.) on the supermarket shelves???
I’ve literally bought every one since I was a kid (and still have them), even though now I can easily get far better information on the internet.
I've been moving my library from where I grew up to my house and came across a Street & Smiths from
1998. Pretty funny to read through some of the stuff. I’m itching like a crack fiend for this season to start.
