Report: Tampa Bay Rays & Carl Crawford "Not Making Significant Progress" On Extension
From Jim Bowden. Take it for what it's worth:
In the meanwhile, this news comes a day after Crawford's Baseball Tonight special, which consisted of a half hour devoted to his training regimen and Karl Ravech all but introducing him as the Yankees' new left fielder. Good job by Crawford's agent on that one.

It was Buster Olney.
The show made me sick. It was like a paid info-mercial
olney sucks
plain and simple and the ESPN “coverage” consists of talking about how the Yankees and the Red Sox have increased their payroll by 50 million to gain 2 wins…
--Gerald Wallace is the best player the Bobcats will have..... EVER
--Someone should slap Larry Brown and bring him back to reality..
Ignoring the yankee part of the equation
I’ll admit I haven’t check the going cost for a win in a few weeks, but just say it’s settled around $4mil and assuming that over the next 5 years CC is good for close to 18~20 WAR you’re still looking at 5/80 in this market climate. Even with a 10% home town discount you’re looking at ~14 million annually. That just doesn’t seem to fit.
Even if Jennings is a 3 WAR annually, playing that extra cash to CC doesn’t seem to be worth the difference and that’s being conservative on DJ. Even a 3 WAR platoon would cost significantly less. Unless CC takes a 30/40% discount, I don’t see how it works.

agreed
no way we can resign Carl.
The interesting thing is what do we do at the trade deadline. It’s an easy call if we are out of the race.
But what if we are a couple of games out? Do we trade him? I would hate to miss the playoffs and lose Crawford for just a draft pick.

The draft picks are probably a better return than the prospects on a short-term rental.

I don't have a problem with this
but I would still have to think that we would be able to get something more valuable then the draft picks we will get for him if he signs elsewhere.

Two high-end draft picks are extremely valuable.

Washington was hardly "high end"
Maybe I’m just an old fashioned BJ suck-off-er. (Good call Sandy)

You still need to sign them.

It’s a waste of an asset if you don’t
If, for example, the giants are one or two games out at that time
It’s certainly possible we’re offered bumgarner, or perhaps even Posey (albeit unlikely) in which case we’d have to bite

I would think both of those guys are out of reach if they had no plans to re-sign Carl
I would think something like Runzler & Noonan would be more realistic. If we have no playoff potential at the deadline, I’d do that deal in a heartbeat. Runzler is going to be a very, very good relief ace shortly and Noonan has a great approach at the plate.

Why wouldn't the giants try to re-sign him?

He fits the veteran player criteria, but do you see them outspending NYs, LAs, or Boston?

So does Omar
I could see him picturing an OF of Craw/Beltran/Bay and getting a bit moist.

I can't imagine Omar surviving the 2010 season
That team is horrible for 100M+ payroll.

You don't expect bouncebacks from Reyes, Wright, and Beltran?
Their pitching is a mystery, but they have some good players and it’s the NL. I think it would be hilarious if the Nats win more games, but I don’t think that’s very likely.

They have enough players to hit
But after Santana that rotation could be horrific unless everyone steps up. They didn’t even sign an innings eater to help out like Garland.
Beltran being hurt doesn’t help also, so CF, 2B, 1B are kinda depressing.
